When it comes to a game review, I'll rely on word of mouth usually. And since I've got a Gamefly account, I can just rent it and send it back the day after I get it if it blows. (Like I did with several DS games that I'm so glad I didn't spend money actually buying) If it's a Japanese game I'll take a look at the score it gets on Famitsu.
I think everything that needs to be said about this subject has been said in the Penny Arcade comics and news posts for the last week and a half or so. Game reviewers and the sites/magazines spawned thereof are completely irrelevant, their job is impossible, and their methods of review are imperceptibly corrupt. It doesn't help that these outlets get massive monetary kickbacks from game publishers with a wink and a nudge, "this game is pretty good, huh guys?"
Wonder if they'll print a retraction, claiming the "6" was accidentally misprinted upside down, and was meant to be a 9.
Unfortunately this is not limited to games. Music/Film/TV and other industries (sup tomshardware.com) feel identical pressures to keep pretty much every review on the site in the upper percentiles 'or else.' I can't remember the last time I saw reviews for anything dip below 60%.Originally Posted by Alleya
Eidos should have spent less money on ads and more on making that game not suck ass. Giving it a 6 was doing Eidos a favor. That shit deserves a 2.
Old CGW (like before they stopped sticking numbers on reviews) would give at least a couple 1/5 and 2/5s a month. Of course most of the time it was Generic_Flight_Sim_196553 or some turn-based strategy game you've never heard of, but there was SWG and stuff too.
Wow, you anti-Nintendos will just take any chance you get to bash Nintendo won't you? An article about a guy getting fired over a low score for a game that has nothing to do with the Wii, and when one guy mentiones the words (twilight princess) you go apeshit, rally your comrades and turn the thread into the quality of that game, going completely off topic.
tl;dr, sony is finished, blah blah
Fired for 6.0? He was being easy on Kane & Lynch. I enjoyed it but I'm easy to entertain, it was pretty terrible for a next-gen game imo.
He probably meant Majora's Mask. That game was indefensibly bad.Originally Posted by Kayos

Thank you for contribution to this thread, please provide a list of games of games you enjoy so I can respond with "COULD YOU POSSIBLY SUCK (insert developer here)'s COCK MORE?!"Originally Posted by Koyuki
Clearly, defending a game that is widely considered to be one of the best ever produced translates into "sucking nintendo's dick". Dumbass.
liek lulz you like ocarina of time? that game was horriblz.
Go play your stupid Halo and shut up, k?
That WAS sarcastic, yes? Semitry.

Anyway yeah, anything that needs to be said about this has already been said. Review sites/magazines can generally be trusted about slightly less than the current government, with the exception of those that are either non-commercial (like, say, blogs) or those that have no interest in making an objective review in the first place (like the escapist) and even then both types will always have reviewers that are heavily biased by their own game preferences, because nobody likes everything equally.
In other news, internet justice never ceases to amuse me.
I agree. I was pretty disappointd with how easy TP was, but the game was still fun.Originally Posted by kuronosan

That said, TP getting an 8.8? Forgiveable. Gerstmann's made some "bad calls" (according to general public opinion) but they're usually founded in logical reasons. He just weighs the bad things a bit too much sometimes, and I think that's what bites him in the end.
However, getting fired over a mediocre game like Kane & Lynch (from developer EIDOS - when is the last time you played a stellar EIDOS game Deus Ex that's when) is kind of ridiculous. Every reviewer has bad reviews, it's their job to be a critic. Editor-in-Chief for IGN Xbox360 Hilary Goldstein gave Assassin's Creed a 7.7 and everyone was quick to post nasty comments and down-rate the review. Still, IGN AU gave it a 8.7, and IGN UK gave it an even-worse 6.5. Critics are there to criticize games, it's their duty to do the dirty-work so their readers don't necessarily have to. If it's their opinion that a game deserves a certain score, then the public and the game companies should respect that, especially when it's a game reviewer with almost 10 years of experience rating games under his belt and not just some newbie or blogger.
If the rumor is true, shame on Eidos but particularly shame on CNet for acting this way on what most would consider a creative outlet.
Doesn't affect me anyway, IGN and Gametrailers.com are the two sites I consult for reviews unless I'm not satisfied with those two (and Zero Punctuation, but that's just for laughs anyway).
