The majority of Anime that gets exported is targetted exclusively at children. So it's only natural to find it off-putting if you see a 40 year-old drop 2 grand for an Akihabara tour to put 200 yen into Japanese Gatcha machines to get a 3-inch Naruto figurine.

Shed that layer of anime and there's some pretty rich stuff under the surface; stuff that seldom makes it to foreign shores with any publicity, and is likely not trying to attract strange tour groups from abroad.

You hate a genre because of the worst types of people it attracts. Yet there's similar scariness attached to just about anything loved by millions: sports, american film, video games, the list goes on.
