A friend of mine who had a similar dislike of Light said that Monster was a similar series in many ways, but without the instantly despicable main character. Haven't gotten around to watching it myself though.

I've seen Monster and it is good. It drags a bit, but the story is good and I love the themes. Tenma (the main character) has a strong sense of personal responsibility that is admirable. Its also interesting that it isn't set in japan, but europe (even though the main character is japanese) so you have to be mindful of which language people are speaking (even though the words are japanese, it is understood the characters are usually speaking German, and other languages when appropriate).

Other than personal responsibility, there is another theme that is Kafka-esque, the inhumanity of Man against Man, the danger of lack of morals in science and war, in raising soldiers. I highly recommend it to anyone that appreciates these themes, and if you don't care, it still is a good thriller.

I started to watch Monster a while ago but I couldn't stand the voices of the nurses, especially when they said 'Dr Tenma!' It really shouldn't have bothered me too much but it just got in my head so I gave up.

Bleach and Naruto used to be my weekly read... not anymore now. Don't ask why did I stop, I don't know the reason too. Probably because ... well.. I'm about to leave what they call 'shounen'

To me reading manga/watching anime is just a normal hobby. I didn't talk too much about it to my friends, even they watch it.

Regarding certain anime/manga titles:
One or two titles I really like right now, probably not gonna be my favourite anymore. This is particularly true for serious themed titles (Evangelion, Hagaren, *can't name any others right now*).
I usually pick at least 1 genre comedy every season. Usually they are rewatchable and still funny even after you watch it again and again.FMP!Fumoffu and Jungle wa itsumo hare nochi guu, Ichigo mashimaro, and probably this season's Minami-ke too.

My word is just take them as normal hobby. You'll probably gonna lol/facepalm/etc to yourself when you get older.

That video made me cringe in more ways than one. I've had my experience as an "otaku" and looking back I wish that I never took part of it. I didn't get as bad as some of the more obsessed fans, but I've had moments here and there when I was bought in to listening to J-rock and AMVs, and watching hours of anime in Japanese w/ subtitles not caring if I understood it or not, debating over trivial subjects in games and anime (i.e. couple setups, canon subjects, etc), and even got talked in to cosplay once for an event. I was naive enough to let myself get talked into this fad and got carried away.

When I went to my first convention, I was horrified beyond belief as I looked into what could of been my future, there were so many of them right down to the last stereotype. After that, my interest in anything anime gradually declined. I think that con was my wake up call and I'm glad I stopped before it was too late.

I still dont mind watching the usual bits of anime like Bebop or Fullmetal once in a while when it's on TV, as far as I'm concerned it's just regular programming. My collection days of DVDs are well over though.

Can someone please explain Naruto? Why is a guy who is training to be a ninja wearing FUCKING ORANGE!?!

Because Ninja are basically superhuman and don't need to rely on clothing camouflage. They act more like soldiers/mercenaries and fight/kill their way through situations. As for stealth, they just change into a puddle of water or change the color of their entire body to match a tree or something. I think the suit Naruto wears is for protection(as most ninja clothing in the series), it is thickly padded and has many pockets for tools. Additionally, he is 12 years old while wearing that costume. He wasn't issued a standard uniform and just wears his own basic style, as annoying/shiny it may be.

So yeah, don't apply basic reasoning to comics. You should have started with how high they can jump or the fact they can shoot fire at each other.

I think the most confusing part about Naruto is when they want to cast a spell they throw gang signs. That's fucking strange.
