Are you downloading on bittorrent atm? Doesnt make sense for your ping to be that high when you are <50mi. There has to be something on your pc that slow down your connection

Nope, I made sure there isn't any downloading prior to starting the speed test. I don't know much about internet speed and how to make it better. I asked a lot of my friends and they all told me it's the location. Honestly, I don't see why because my cousin lives about 5-6 blocks away from me and uses the same service. If it helps you in figuring out why, I am using a Linksys wireless router with wireless disabled.

Actually, if I test it on servers outside of my country I get acceptable values (~300), while each in my country is higher than 600...

Slight bump, but I have to ask, how much are fast connections costing these days?

It appears my college uncapped the network speed to the residence, so anything I throw at it (with servers that can handle it) downloads at stupidly high speeds.

I don't know if I can live with the crap 1mbps connection my parent's home has when I move back there for the x-mas break after experiencing this.

In possibly the first (and only) defense of American ISP's:

Rolling out fibre-to-the-premises (aka: FTTP, the connection type FiOS gives you) is a metric fuck-ton less expensive for a small nation like Japan than ours. You're talking about ~330,000km^2 of landmass to wire, less than the state of California, and that's not even when you consider much of that is wilderness or otherwise undeveloped.



That being said, ISP's here are also retarded and utterly refuse to spend money on, well, anything.
