The arguement isn't that we are going to destory the earth, its that we are going to destroy our ability to live on it. The earth itself will most likely be there till the sun turns into a red giant in like 4.5 billion years. How we control the climate on the planet will be the determining factor for how many more years anyone would want to be on this planet.

Climate is only one of a ton of problems were going to be facing like overpopulation, lack of resources, etc. I have a feeling that in 50 years, noones going to care about global warming and overpopulation is going to be the real issue. Nobody anywhere is afraid we're going to make the earth burst into flames and turn to ash due to global warming. Nobody anywhere is afraid that someday the planet might not exist anymore through some fault of human beings. There are plenty of planets in the universe that are not fit for us to live on, but are existing just fine. What we're primarily concerned about is keeping the earth fit for human habitation.

Finding an alternative fuel source would mean that we don't have to pay $3/gallon for gas, or get roped into Middle East bullshit because we depend on their oil. If we had cleaner burning fuel, the quality of the air we have to breathe every second of every day could improve. If I incorporated solar energy into the workings of my home, I'd save a small fortune on my electric bill.

I'm going to assume that you have used some form of modern medicine at some point in your life. This is also only delaying the inevitable. Modern humans(homo sapiens) originated about 200,000 years ago, so it wouldn't really be that much of a stretch to assume humans would be around in some form or another for another 50,000 when previous species like homo erectus were around for over a million years.

We don't need cleaner fuels, we need smarter citizens. If in the next 10-20 years we converted to a nuclear powered society, there would be far less emissions and much cheaper energy. People just can't separate nuclear power from nuclear bombs, or they think of Chernobyl and 3 mile island (3MI wasn't bad at all). it wasnt much more than 50 years ago our nations were having 8 kids per household. Thing is through industrialization and education we have reduced the number of kids in the households. For them having 8 kids is a good idea because it means a good retirement fund(8 kids providing 8 incomes) since most families cant support 1 child enough to go through education process and get a better job.
Our countries are different as we have education as well as economic conditions that try to prohibit having many children. Hell most of the western nations have a negative population growth rate(US is one of the few that is naturally growing)
