    Totally new stuff not working.

I just recently ordered a totally new setup. CPU PSU MOBO RAM GFX. Well i hooked everything up today and nada. The damn thing refused to come on. The PSU made this really scratchy noise whenever i pressed the power button so i figured it was the PSU. Well after an hour and a half i found out it wasn't the PSU at all since im running my current comp off the same PSU. My question to you guys is: do you think the motherboard was a DoA? Also how would that affect my CPU GFX and RAM i had inside the mobo trying to turn it on? Would any damage occur while doing that? I just sent out a refund for the mobo and plan on buying a different one in hopes that everything still works. Gimme some feedback prz kthx!

2 things to check when there is NO power going to the comp.

And bear with me... I know these may be obvious to some people.

    1) BOTH connections plugged in properly to the mobo?

    2) Double check your power switch jumpers that connect the power button to the mobo. If these are backwards, it will lead to not starting for some computers...

Now, with that being said... not many problems outside of the power supply and a faulty motherboard will cause the power to totally not come on. If the PSU is working fine in a different computer (also may want to check the voltage/wattage output as these can very A LOT between processors + accessories) and you have triple checked the 2 steps above, chances are that your mobo was DoA.

As far as your other components, the slightest bit of static electricity COULD damage them. More than likely tho, they should be fine.

Since you know the PSU is working and connected properly.. the CPU or MB is bunkt. Try this *note* seriously do this very fast or youll end up burning yourself. Take off the heatsink on the cpu, put your finger on it and turn on the power, within a second the cpu whould be scalding hot or not really hot at all. If you end up burning your finger, the CPU is bad, if the CPU isnt getting hot, or not very hot at all, then its the MB. Chances are it's not the RAM or VidCard, you can usually get to post or get some beeps out of it even if those two are not installed/broked.

Its a crappy way to find out, but it works ^_^

Hold the mobo out of the case while it's hooked up the PS. Turn it on and see if there's power. You might be short circuiting because the mobo is basically on the case. It's happened to me a few times.

how do you honestly determine the mobo/cpu is bad by how warm/hot the cpu is getting?

And if this is the case just touch the bottom of the heatsink because if I remember correctly new processors can only run for a max of 10 seconds before they fry, unless of course you want to continue to use your entire hand as a heatsink.

lol seriously, I don't think removing the heatsink and burning your finger off is a viable way to test your equipment. It sounds like your board is either being grounded (check to see if the bottom of it is touching the case chassis) or it was just DOA.

It really does work lol. When I was building my first PC I had both Gigabyte and Intel tell me the same thing.

for some reason I seriously doubt intel told you that, I want a quote from somewhere that states this.

I cant quote my phone from 3 years ago?
Not sure why it's so hard to believe this testing method.

Because what company would suggest BURNING yourself to test there hardware!?? not to mention putting the hardware at risk as well as yourself?? Sounds like someone was screwing with you over the phone lol...

Maybe they meant touch the bottom portion of the heatsink to see if it's warm and not the actual base of the heatsink, it won't be anywhere near the temps the cpu core(s) themselves reach.

No, it was word for word what I described lol. I dont really care, they both told me the warnings that it could get hot really fast, but wouldnt burn my finger off, etc, and said it was the fastest/cheapest way to check.

Well once the CPU reaches 80c the computer should shut off (Intel), soooo at least your finger wouldn't be boiled!

That sounds like a challenge to me, see if you can pull it off, common, it'll only hurt a little.
