Re: New Nvidia drivers for FFXI.

I've been running FFXI on my Alienware laptop. nVidia GeForce Go 6800 using 169.17, modded driver for laptops and I get terrible FPS and performance. I've also been having an issue for a few months where if I turn up the background resolution past 1400x1400, my laptop will shut down completely when I'm around heavy effects, like at telepoints or in sea. I haven't been able to figure out why and it's really frustrating. Tried different drivers and settings, nothing has fixed it so far. :/

Your FPS issues have nothing to do with the issues that 8x00 people are having. You most likely have screwed up some setting in the nVidia control panel. Reset everything to default.

I've already tried that, that was one of the first things I did and I had no improvement whatsoever.

Ah just curious izzy, at this point if the .17 drivers don't work, nor have others, are people just kinda SOL?
I've tryed all the drivers and reinstalled them multiple times, nothing has worked. Is this common, or am i doing something completely retarded?

The .17 drivers were designed to specifically fix the problem with 8x00 cards and Vista. If there is another underlying problem, those drivers aren't going to address that. I wouldn't say they're totally shit out of luck, but you might have to try a shitload of drivers before you find one that works well. Maybe tweak the nVidia settings more.

Does it run fine when plugged in? I found out on my MacBook Pro (the hard way) that using a modded driver broke the Powermizer setting in the nVidia control panel, rendering my laptop gimp without being plugged into a jack.

Re: New Nvidia drivers for FFXI.

I did a system restore on my Vista32 last night to a few weeks ago since I did something to Norton that made it cry. The restore didn't help, so I uninstalled the whole thing and put it back in, no issues. However, XI was back to like 5fps choppy mess mode for unknown reasons. I reinstalled the 171es to no avail.

No, I didn't un-and-reinstall XI... I used control panel remove on all the nvidia panel stuff and deleted out the hardware from device manager. Restarted, and windows set it up automatically (to some august 07 version), then installed the 171s... perfect. Probably something that most people have tried before, but I figured I'd mention it. No clue whatsoever why this worked.

Well for me at least they stopped my game crashing, although this is a brand new computer so not many days of evidence.

Has anybody found out why all PC/NPC disappear with these set of drivers(started happening with 169.17)?

It's always plugged in, and set to "always on" in power settings. It's not overheating, and I've tried running without anything else running and it doesn't effect how bad my lag is.

Re: New Nvidia drivers for FFXI.

Hmm, Blue Screen of Death on both types of installations:

I downloaded the proper driver (32-bit Vista 169.17) and the modded .INF for my laptop driver (GeForce Go 6150).

I followed the steps on laptopvideo2go.com using the setup.exe (blue screen) and again using the Have Disk method (again blue screen).

After the first blue screen, I re-extracted the files and re-downloaded the .INF to install again (I didn't do that before, and the .INF had gotten deleted upon restoring my OS).

After reading several different topics and forums about this issue, I couldn't find any that could resolve my problem that appears to be recurring. I do believe my laptop would greatly benefit from the new driver, as I get poor FPS anywhere even in vacant zones. After reading many people's reviews, it seems like a great fix.

Any possible help would be great, seeing as I am not the only one that is having this problem.

ok so the only drivers that sort the fps problem out are 169.17 but they don't support my card 8800gts g92, i've tried installing the new ones 169.21 but no luck

how do i go about adding the 8800gts g92 to the 169.17 inf file?

    thanks

You act like I never read any of this, however I have. This is the thread where I found the modded INF thanks to laptop2go.com I've done what people have mentioned, I even followed this step:

    start > run > devmgmt.msc

Click + next to Display Adapters to expand

Right click your gfx card(s), uninstall.

don't need silly programs to uninstall for you.
Doing this actually completed the installation for the new driver when I went to install it (instead of saying incompatible or instantly going into blue screen like before), but after I restarted my computer, it immediately went BSoD. From there I had to restore my laptop AGAIN.

I even attempted to get the "driver cleaner", but to no avail because all links for downloading were deleted (I couldn't figure out for the life of me why I couldn't download the software).

I honestly am not sure what the problem is. The only thing I could see wrong is that perhaps I NEEDED the driver cleaner, but I can't find a link to download it. 80% of this thread is either bitching about why people aren't gaining any enhanced performance, people talking about how awesome the new driver is, or questions like mine. The other 20% are people that give helpful information.

I read the diagnostics when my laptop attempted to auto-repair, and it mentioned "Bad Driver", but I'm not sure if that means it's incompatible with my laptop (vista 32 bit, made sure. Checked the list, my card is mentioned).

Doesn't sound like you followed the simple step of replacing the .inf file with the modded one from lv2g.com. Therefore you didn't read the entire thread, or follow the instructions on lv2g.com

Re: New Nvidia drivers for FFXI.

I've read through almost all of this topic and I just want to make a confirmation of my assumption.

Hope I'm not beating a dead horse here...

I'm running on an evga 8800gtx + windows vista ultimate and was obviously having FFXI issues. I went and changed my driver to the one on the first post in this topic. The gameplay changed dramatically, but it's still not running as smooth as the 8800gtx should be for a game this old hehe. I get about 15 fps when 10 people are fighting on my screen (my exp camp plus one more = a small headache).

If I formatted my disc and put on XP Pro instead of Vista would this make the game run at 29.x fps like it should? Has anyone tried this or can anyone confirm this? I'm sorry if this question was already addressed, but thanks for the unlimited resource of information on these forums :D
