I am having this exact same issue as wellOriginally Posted by Maguile

decided to roll back to XP, used the .17 driver, with the updated .inf file, still a no-go with my 8800GTS 512, getting framerates of about 15FPS in high populated areas whereas a friend of mine with the same computer specs, except that he has a 8600GT (using newest nvidia drivers), can get a full 29FPS everywhere he goes...dynamis, whitegate, etc etc.
sounds like an issue with the 8600GTS 512 only -_-
/annoyed.
They use the same chipset. Most likely you have some different settings somewhere you don't know about.Originally Posted by Transient_Dreamer
everything is default, I just purchased this new computer and put it together, only thing I might've changed was the refresh rate on my monitor (from 60 to 75 hertz)
I'm pretty sure my friend hasn't changed any of his settings either as he is not that computer saavy.
for the record we are both running quad cores @ 2.4GhZ, he has 2GB or RAM and I have 4GB, and the big diff is that hes' using an 8600 card (most updated driver from nvidia) and i'm using the 8800 (.17 drivers), all other hardware specs should be negligible.
i've also tried the .25 driver and the latest drivers as well, same thing.
So after this last patch I've gone back to 5 FPS all the time using the Nvidia 8800 GTX (most recent drivers) + Vista 32bit. Anyone else?
Still normal (29FPS until 20+ people begin to load.. then it drops to 15ish) for me, Vista x64.
That's not even a problem lol.Originally Posted by sekaran

I just went to 173.40 or something and they are working fine for me rofl.
Not strictly a video card upgrade, but Vista SP1 is out this morning.
Who knows, maybe it will change the story for a bunch of drivers with the extra patch jobs...
Note:
It broke my May 07, old Creative X-Fi card driver...Good news is, Creative has a new driver up for download.
Can't give frame rates...but
I am using 169.25 on a 7950GT with no apparent issues before SP1 and no apparent issues after.
Will observe a bit longer to see if there are any improvements.
I should probably go test The Witcher...
Just general all round improvement with SP1. Frame-rates a little better, but not spectacular.
does it break hax vista?
Question about the upgrade.
I got a new laptop with Vista and a Gforce 8400M GS card. My frame rates are never fluid, but they aren't ground to a halt. I'm wondering if the upgrade would help me, or potentially ruin what is already functioning. I don't know what relative performance I should be getting with a dual core, and 2gb of memory is, so I figured I would ask.
Thanks for all the help in advance.
Sup Ryanjh, if this is the Ryanjh I think it is (from Titan), do you have access to our LS forums yet?
Regarding the drivers, my wife just got a 8400M GS in her 2 gb ram laptop. She is running on vista as well and upgrading the drivers to the original ones listed and linked on page 1 of this thread cause a huge jump in performance!
Just DL the driver from laptopvideo2go.com, download the modified .inf from there too.
Follow their instructions on their website for installing the driver. They have them on there or on their forums.
Only thing I would say is look online for a free version of driver cleaner pro v 1.5 (have to pay for most recent versions, so I say screw that). After you uninstall your current driver from the add/remove programs function, restart, and run driver cleaner pro using the nvidia cleaning filter. then restart again, and install the laptopvideo2go driver with the modified inf.
GL bud
yeah, it's supposed to break the bios emulation and timestop hacks, though there will eventually be a cracked SP1 availableOriginally Posted by shaddix

Just a laptop question cause I've been wondering the same things.Originally Posted by ryanjh

I don't actually know what we should be expecting to see with a laptop etc, so hard to compare whats "running well" and whats not.
I hear a lot of people giving out comments like "runs decent" "Runs okay" etc but can some people on laptops mention any specific experiences?
Laptop:
What processor/video card?
Version of the driver?
What settings have you set FFXI to?
What FPS are you getting in different area's of the game? (Town, Assault, Sky, Sea, Dynamis)

Video Card: Dual 256 GeForce 8700M GT
Video Driver: Using 169.17 from Laptop2go
FFIX settings: Run the game in 1024 x 768. The background resolution is set to 1280 x 1280
FPS: In crowded areas such as DA where there are up to 100+ ppl, my FPS drops to about 10-11. Same can be said in whitegate I get around 10-11FPS. Doing small manned events, I get the 29 FPS like I should be.
However, i will tell you that I am running windows vista. I had windows XP running on a laptop with slightly worse specs than the ones I listed above and I almost always had 29 FPS and I saw HNMs like Fafhogg pop yellow longer than I do currently with Vista. The game performance between vista/xp is huge. I can't even dual box anymore with Vista, but on windows XP I could do it with no problem or lag.
Is this a problem only with nvidia graphics cards? I was thinkin about buying a new laptop that would play ffxi alright.. not looking for great performance, because I only want to spend about $500.. Would I be better off with Radeon x1200 or intel graphics accelerator 3100 over a Geforce Go 7150m?
