I had posted this in the tech area, I but I figured I might as well post it here and see where I get a reply faster : )
Quick question guys and gals,
I've been playing FFXI on Sony S/SZ Laptops for a few years now (I'm on my third laptop now) and I've always had no issues running FFXI. The original Geforce Go 6800 and now Go 7400 have run FFXI perfectly. I'm going to be upgrading in the next few weeks again to a Sony SZ780 and this time it has a Geforce 8400M GS card in it and will ship with Windows Vista.
I've tried running Vista on my older laptops but always went back to XP due to crappy frame rates (like everyone else) in FFXI. When I get my new laptop I'm going to give Vista + Beta Nvidia drivers + FFXI a try and see how it goes.
My question is; If the Vista + Beta Nvidia drivers + FFXI combo fails, can I just downgrade to XP and run FFXI the same or better than what I'm used to on my old laptops?
If anyone needs more info the laptop, or something close as I'll be customizing the one I buy, is linked below:

Thanks in advance!
I recently bought a new PC.
AMD Dual Core 3.2GHZ
3GB of RAM (Thank You 32 bit Vista...)
Nvidia 8800 GT
I tweaked my registry settings, downloaded the beta drives, 174.74? Something like that, and from the get, have had zero prblms. Standing @ AH in Whitegate 26-29FPS, DA 100+ ppl, 24-29 FPS, full shadows, effects, etc.
what resolution, you using the registry/POLutils to enable MSAA? I'm using the 175.12's, was using the 174.74's, vista x64, 8800 GTX, full shadows at 1920x1200 (3840x3840 texture resolution), at the auction house I get about 8-9 fps.Originally Posted by CoronA1979
Are you running an Intel or AMD CPU? I have an Intel CPU and 8800GTS 320MB and get less than 12fps at AH. AMD + 8*** series = full performance?Originally Posted by Reality
I have full fps with Intel e8400, geforce 8800gt using 174.74 drivers and 1680x1050 resolution, but not using polutils thing from pebbles, but with full shadows and everything.
I noticed that with Intel CPUs, there's a fair bit more of tweaking needed. When I had my AMD dual core system I had 29FPS all the time no matter where I was right away with almost no tweaking. My new quad core(Intel) system was rocking 10-15FPS at first, but I had to mess with my video cards' settings and the drivers for a while before I got the same performance as my AMD system.Originally Posted by ShinseiRyu
i am curious to what you did i am running a very similar system and i also get 10-15fps in crowded areas like aery. I am currently running the 169.17 drivers (174.74 wont install for some reason? theres another question i may get answered here) and it fixed my major problems, now if i could get these cards to run like they should...thanks in advance.
Edit: I found out that the driver i was looking for didnt say it was compatible with Nvidia 8800GT 512mb, if anybody could link me to drivers for this video card i would appreciate it.
Interesting, now that you said it. I had a AMD black 5000+ and I had 29 FPS everywhere, now I have a Q6600 and i'm having problems. Is there something you can tweak with the processor that may give stable performance with FFXI?Originally Posted by Vertabreaker
I get terrible lag when I am in a crowded area or exping. It gets as low as 3-5 FPS but 30 FPS in my MH. I can't seem to find a driver that supports my Geforce 9500M GS on my laptop to fix this terrible lag. Please help me.
Edit: Im running 32-bit Vista
Overclock it. The reason i say this is because the models and what not on FFXI seem to be more processor based and not too big on video card. Quad Core and Dual Core don't mean much because FFXI does not utilize multiple cores.Originally Posted by CaptainN
For example: My old ass P4 2.4GHz OC'd + Radeon X850XT runs this game better than my current E6600 OC'd + 8800GTS (G92)....

Any issues send me a PM.. I can walk you through it.
Hmmm..... I don't see any as well. I'm looking on laptopvideo2go.com and nothing is up yet. Just be aware that these cards are new so 3rd party updated drivers might not be out just yet.Originally Posted by Nolar

Thank you very much Ezrael, and just incase anybody was reading this wondering those drivers had no effect on my gameplay. Same FPS in the same crowded areas etc etc.
Try using Driver Cleaner and uninstall all the old drivers. Then install the 174 ones and see if that helps.
Driver cleaner instructions
175.16 released yesterday.
Tested last 175.16
Still same shit after a total cleaning driver with drivercleaner in windows vista safe mode aka 10-15fps everywhere where there is more than 20 char on screen. (High Shadow mode cut by half the fps :/ )

Do you have a lot of background apps running? Laptops tend to have that problem.
is this driver better than 174?
Any news on graphic drivers for the Nvidia 9 series?
As far as I know... FFXI only runs on "one cpu" and wasen't optimized for 2, having quad core just leaves the other 2-3 cores "idle" i'd imagine. Considering a quad core vs a dual core... has slower overall mhz per core, you'd be slowing FFXI to go dual core -> quad core.
FFXI is like 30% video card power 70% cpu power as far as I know pretty much unless they did some major graphic system overhall since I last played it (which I doubt!, maybe a dual core optimization since I last played but almost doubt that too)
