On topic, to the OP, no you're not wrong in thinking that because its all a matter of personal preference, but that doesn't mean its not stupid.

I think you will have a hard time finding anyone who is willing give up on life and go down without a fight. Personally, if there was a 100% chance I was going to die from something, but there was a surgery that would give me a 1% chance of survival, sign me up for that shit.

In some rare cases you may actually get denied treatment for certain things due to the outstanding risks involved with it, but only if there are many alternatives to the said procedure.

That being said, it should (and will always be) up the patient (or patients family) to decide whether or not they want to proceed with a life threatening operation with no alternative methods.

This is the way it will always be until the world is over populated and our genetics are faulty to every single possible new virus on the face of the planet due to lack of natural selection. Oh well.... *edit*technically natural selection wouldn't be involved with people over 70 bahh whatever

Easy answer: put yourself in the person's shoes who's facing death. Would you want a chance to live longer? Even if your answer is "no", the same cannot be said for other people, nor can you truly respond until you find yourself in that position. I suppose people who believe there's life after death might be a little less concerned, but those of us who feel that you only have this existence are apt to want to stretch it out as long as possible.
