Why would they ban hookah in UAE? Doesn't it contain only a small portion of actual tobacco? Don't see whats wrong with it, I go to the Hookah Bar in my town almost every weekend.

link to one show. I was 2 people back from the front, right in the center. There were people freaking out in front because it was so tight. I lifted up several people so they could get out. Was a great show, I was soaked through my sweatshirt and t-shirt.

Yeah, it seems rather strange to me. My knowledge of the history and ethnography of Middle Eastern cultures is pretty spotty at best, but I was under the impression that the use of shisha/hookahs was a very common aspect of men's social lives, often traditionally combined with coffee bars.

I absolutely love smoking flavoured tobaccos from a shisha - it's such a relaxing and social experience. However, most people out West here in BC just use them as big bongs to smoke weed out of. Actual shisha tobacco from Arab countries has to be smuggled in and the stuff that's legal in Canada isn't all that great, so I usually have to go to Montreal or Ottawa to find people with real good stuff. Though I hear that there's a Lebanese market in my city that has the good shisha tobacco in the back, you just have to make nice with the owners to sell you the smuggled in stuff lol

They're illegal in Canada? :O That sucks, they're all over the place here in Australia, although historically during the 60s and 70s, when Arabs started immigrating to Australia, their Hookahs were banned/confiscated because they thought arabs were bringing giant bongs into the country.

In lebanon they're crazy for them though, when I was there, I met this guy who was the biggest nut, and had one that's actually taller than you when you sit next to it to use it.

No, hookas and shishas are legal in Canada. It's just that to sell tobacco products in Canada the manufacturer has to comply with a number of Health Canada standards, mostly having a minimum of one third of the packaging covered with warning pics and labels about how tobacco will kill fetuses and the like. To my understanding there's a similar law in Australia, though I hear it's like fully one half of the package that gets covered. Thus, some manufacturers don't want to have their packaging marred by the labels so they don't sell certain products in Canada - that's why I can't get Parliament and Lucky Strike cigarettes here in Canada.

There might be some kind of thing with customs too as the smaller Arab companies might not bother getting a tobacco exporter license for Canada, but small shopkeepers will bring it in one way or another to sell to local people of Arab/Middle Eastern ethnicity and the right non-Arab locals who know how to ask (I don't unfortunately, but I know some people who do ;D )

But like I said, hookas/shishas are getting more popular amongst Canadian urban youth - though they are mostly just used as bongs. Heh, my girlfriend, who is living in residence at the local university, actually had a lecture from her RAs about how hookas are forbidden in the rez rooms and common areas because they're a fire hazard. (Which there are, there was a deadly house fire a year ago here in Victoria of a university party house where a hookah knocked over and started a fire where like 3 people died.)
