My honest opinion on it, most things worth downloading either aren't licensed in the USA or on smaller labels that nobody cares about.

It's better to acknowledge good musician ship than to just say "I like this music and it's the best, everyone else's opinions are invalid." I'd still suggest to look into all types of music (music, not rap/cookiecutter pop) and find stuff you like. Only reason why I dislike mainstream is because the bands they have out now are pretty much the same, they are only in it for the money. They don't even make their songs, they have other people write it and they perform it. That plus the fact that if you know anything about music, it's barely considered talented by a lot of standards. Although some people just like simplicity in their music, which is fine.

99% of Indie music is indeed, atrocious. However a lot of the better metal is either foreign, or a bit less well known (aka cared about) by a lot of the larger labels, there's plenty of great music in every genre on smaller labels, hell even shit like maroon 5 if it is your thing (god forbid)

If you sit online and hit /download 5000x on a mix of slipknot, britney spears, linkin park, maroon 5, jennifer lopez, you deserve everything the law can throw at you for being retarded. Yes, let's pick the highest selling by average music / bands and download it illegally, nobody will catch me while I download the most watched music from the most watched sites on the internet!

While I am often forced to listen to plenty of indie shit, I grew up listening much lesser-known metal, punk, and 'hardcore' and while yes, somewhere deep down I may have a soft-spot for 1-2 mudvayne songs (hey I was like 12) I'm not going to download them on the intraweb, because my rational thought process still works.

And as for video, it's really an absolute no-brainer. Downloading unlicensed in the US anime vs. downloading One Tree Hill.

Whether or not I will forever consider a person a waste of life for listening to certain music or not is a value judgement, one I'm fine with making, whether or not somebody acknowledges the risk of downloading the new J-Lo versus downloading No Innocent Victim (everyone say, who?) and the resulting choice being the labeling factor for the waste of life status is not a value judgement, it's a rational inference based on all the facts involved. By all means though, if downloading Maroon 5 on the intraweb is your thing, feel free to go to jail or lose 10,000$, I don't mind, in fact I endorse it.

That's fine and good, (I agree with all of the last paragraph 100%) but it doesn't make most indie shit any less garbage.

Doesn't really matter to me much since I don't really download much that isn't from a video game or anime OST anyway, I listen to other stuff, but I almost never download it and save it.

Uh, so far you've listed more bands on Indie labels that you like than big labels, so when you think about it, there's probably more good music that's "Indie" than anything else. Either way you could just say you pretty much only like metal.

Indie music doesn't really exist anymore. It's very misleading because it applies to so many bands with such different sounds. There really is nothing independent about music distribution anymore because any band can use the internet effectively to get plays, whether it's a mega-band like RHCP or some dude who records in a closet.

I'd classify all the bands you listed as whiny scene music, but that's just me.
