    Car trouble... Toyota Camry

Okay so I drive a 1991 Toyota Camry V6 Automatic... Its a nice car has decent gas mileage on it and it gets me to school and back... I've been having a weird problem for a while now:

I'm on the freeway on ramp I push the petal down enough to get up to 70 by the end of the ramp with no trouble. Sometimes it will shift then at about 55 it will keep revving and revving and not shift until I back off on the pedal and then push back down again or it just won't do it at all. I've tried showing my dad and I can't recreate it when he's around so its only sometimes.

I've been told it may be the timing belt or transmission so what do you think BG?

My first guess is tranny, my old truck (88 dodge dakota) used to do this, and it was only occasionally. Also a V6 Auto. I flushed the tranny and that cleared it up, maybe try that? Kind of a pain in the ass, but i only did it out of coincidence, not because I thought it would actually fix it.

Its not the timing belt. The timing belt is meant to synchronize the valve timing with the pistons motion. It is specific for intake and exhaust of gas into the combustion chamber. It can be 1-2 teeth off causing poor idle and misfire, but most of the problem from a timing belt is when it breaks. If you are lucky, you are at a low speed when it happens and it just shuts you down. Higher than 25mph tends to like to bend valves as the engine's rpm is generally much higher and when the valves and pistons react on their own, it can get very messy (and expensive). Timing belt is a maintenance item on Toyota every 75-90k miles.

As for the transmission, it is probably the case. Either the transmission bands for the different gears are starting to go bad and stick in certain gears or your torque convertor is not locking in properly. I didn't read the mileage (if it was even there), but more than likely it is in need of an overhaul. Import trannies are not cheap to rebuild (no pun intended, it was funny enough to type) so looking for a low mile used one might be a good option.

Kick down cable is just out of adjustment. Very common in Toyota's.

this happened in my dads truck where he would need to feather the throttle to shift it. resulted in a new transmission after a few thousand miles, also go figure a new radiator. get it checked.
