We'll see, all I can say is I'll know when I play it. I've stopped caring for hype a long ass time ago (unless it's SSBB <<; but that's a rare exception lol)

It isn't about to crash and burn.
And there's no reason for it to because it's FF... they just need to do a better job is all.
Should they be aiming for a 45/40 next time?

Don't get me wrong, FF12 wasn't my favorite of the series, but I don't understand the heavy criticism its gotten from people on these forums either.

I hope Lost Odyssey is as good as its hype too. I expected a lot from Blue Dragon, and was let down, but I really hope that Lost Odyssey will be a winner. I think it got a 34/40 from Famitsu, and sold around 55,000 copies in its first week in Japan (good for 360).

    Re: New FFXIII Trailers

I can honestly give you some points for the storyline, i enjoyed it, but i did feel they did not go as in deph as i would have liked, and i expected the political intrigue to be more complex, but i supose it might have turned into something too complicated for the typical FF fan to comprehend, so i'll let that slide. I just also felt that they should have delved more into the Occuria, the Espers?, and Rosaria, i would have loved to have gone to their homeland.

However, what i did enjoy from 12 was that the "bad guys" weren't actually bad at all, i can't tell you how much i enjoyed to actually be engaged by actual people, not just the psychopaths/typical bad guys. Everyone had a driving reason in the game, and i also felt that they actually developed the antagonists more than the protagonists. And, the final boss was actually present throughout the whole game lol.

Both Cid fights. He's awesome. <3 FF needs more antagonist Cids, way better than the corny fatass from 8 or the frog/whatever he was from 9 (not talking about Highwind, he's awesome too .)

He's not Seifer damnit! But Nomura did design both characters so... (the KH2 Seifer anyways.)

    Both trailers look nice.

Also just wanted to add, you can trace futuristic/realistic/whatever elements back to FF4 too with the Tower of Babel and that giant robot. So to say it has no place in FF is pretty wrong. Fantasy is a very broad category, not just magic and medieval aspects.

    Re: New FFXIII Trailers

I'd say both trailers were completely awesome. FFXIII: Versus looks awesome though. Granted the guy looks like your typical Cloud-I'm sad, yet kick some ass.. but I don't care. That fight scene was just amazing.

The other FFXIII, the main one I guess.. that one was nice too. I loved even more detail they went into for the fight scene and what not. Looking forward to both, seriously.

On the note about FFXII, I loved the way the villains were handled. I'm glad it wasn't a random Necron along with Kuja, or Ultimecia from VIII.. or god damn Sephiroth who had an obsession over his mother.

    Re: New FFXIII Trailers

I don't know about everybody else, but to me what appeals the most about Final Fantasy is the change. They constantly keep changing everything around in each new game and trying new (and usually risky) things, way more than other games do. New worlds, new characters, new story, new setting, new battle system and every now and then something extra that just makes it different from the previous games(i.e. going away from medieval into steam punk at FF6 and 7, large amounts of voice acting on 10 when it was a relatively new thing, trying to go online on 11, moving away from turn based on 12 - among other things) . To me, it's that kind of change that makes Final Fantasy stand out from the large majority of other series and franchises. The fact that you never really know what they'll redesign on the next one makes it always worth waiting for, which is very refreshing when you consider the amount of unoriginal sequels around these days.

What's attracting me the most so far is the little info they've released about their perspective on Versus XIII, saying how theme-wise it'll probably be the darkest and most serious Final Fantasy title to date. If you'll notice in that trailer there's a few little extra details that might me an indication of where they're going with it, like the part where the (presumably)main character breaks one guard's neck and, a few seconds later, stabs another one with one of his swords and you can see the blade going through him, blood and guts included, which is a little more visceral than Final Fantasy games normally are. I like the setting too, it's refreshing to see something a little different than your usual standard RPG settings on a Final Fantasy.

The regular XIII doesn't seem to have anything out of the ordinary in the concept, but the gameplay looks promising. Everybody's already mentioned the battle system, but I'm also kinda wondering what do they want to do with the whole summon thing. That was a pretty awesome looking Shiva.

The summons are apparently going to be used for other things as well when you're not in a battle, right? Shiva being a motorcycle, etc.

    Re: New FFXIII Trailers

Not sure if getting excited talking about FFXIII and Versus XIII is a good or bad thing, but here's my 2 gil on it.

First of all... Elcura, I'm not sure whether to be happy to find someone who understands Final Fantasy like I do or to be scared by it... woah o.o You pretty much hit the nail on the head for every retarded excuse people brought up to say XIII is not a FF game. Good job!

As for both the trailers and my observations on FFXIII and Versus XIII: Looks pretty interesting, it certainly has me excited. It will most likely be the first and last use of the white engine that SE developed, but oh well. Here's hoping that the unreal engine can boost future final fantasy titles.

It is a pleasant surprise to know a female character will once again take the lead role in this installment of FF, despite the fact that many didn't consider FFX-2 to be a FF game/sucked. Yes, I haven't forgotten about Terra but that is beside the point. This is Spart...er, I mean, FFXIII. Anyway, Lightning is apparently a codename for the protagonist. Her interchangable weapon of choice which seems like a gunblade is quite hot. I'm rather waiting to see which direction this game will go too, the summoning forces "usage" is intriguing, but nevertheless I'm sure SE will pull through with this game. Graphics, needless to say is hands down SE quality.

A dark mood, in a hyper-realistic setting. Enter Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Here, the prince of the last kingdom with one of the few powerful crystals left is suddenly ambushed. I like the contrast of this game to FFXIII, where it's bright and colorful there but dark and more gloomy here. One can experience a freedom in battle that no other Final Fantasy has had before, as the player can choose and wield weapons of different selections. Further details remain to be seen but given Nomura Tetsuya is directing this one I have hopes that this will be a fantastic title on it's own.

To give clarifications on what some people said:

-FFXIII and Versus XIII is NOT directed simultaneously by Nomura Tetsuya. Nomura is only directing Versus XIII, FFXIII is being directed by Motomu Toriyama who has directed FFX-2 and FFXII: Revenant Wings. However Nomura *is* the character designer for both titles. If you don't know much about something, wiki it up, it's only a url/favorite and a search away from getting all the info you need on a game, or whatever's available of it. Don't pull and/or spew shit outta your arses.

-FFXIII has a theatrical feel to it. As vague as that sounds, from what I collected of reviews and interviews it seems that the FFXIII team is trying to develope a game/playable version of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. Hence my choice of words for "theatrical". Their small hint is that you insert commands (eg: Attack, guard, Magic - Firaga, etc) in a sequential storyline/flowchart-like manner, and the visuals "play out" the battle sequences in the order of how you entered commands. Refer it to Xenogears, the original made by SE if you will, where you entered the actions a character can do and have it executed into combos and such. Whereas Versus XIII will have a similar playing style like Kingdom Hearts's mechanics. It is said to have an Action-RPG feel to it, which is what I'm more interested in these days.

If anything has convinced me to get the PS3, it's these 2 titles and MGS4.

    Re: New FFXIII Trailers

well if you pay close attention to the short sequence in the ff13 trailer with an "interface" of some sort, you can see how when she jumps over a bunch of guys and slash at one guy at the end, a few things on the interface light up:

top left corner "map" has two dots circled, assuming one is Lightning and the other is the enemy being attacked
bottom center "Information" bar shows "Attack" highlighted in orange, then disappeared as the attack finished
middle of the screen near where the guy getting owned, a number pop up also the word "normal," assuming it means normal damage 5xx

now, after all that she turns around and fires at the rest of the enemies, another few things show up on the interface:

top left corner map, all red dots circled, assuming all enemies on the map being targeted
bottom center "Information" bar highlighted Firaga
all across the screen next to each enemy attacked you see "Fire" then a number, also a "Chain 10" dead center, probably showing all of them taking fire damage and dead, accumulating 10 chained kills

I'm pretty skeptical as to that sequence being actual gameplay footage, but it'd be really kickass if SE can achieve that in the final product
