I'm not totally banking on this being connected to Proteus' pop cycle, I just noticed strange activity after he has popped. At this point it is just easier for me to ride both ships so I can go afk on the one to Nashmau and work on things that aren't XI. Plus it saves me gil (albeit a small amount) to not have to pay for the ferry ticket everytime. Also since Proteus' pop cycle is still not really known, this gives me a chance to try and figure it out, too. (Sword still worth 1.5-2m on Ifrit)
I had originally thought maybe he was a NM like Cactrot Rapido/Shikagami, too, where you have to be fighting/holding an Apkallu for it to aggro to you (especially SE's cryptic hint that it doesn't like to be alone), but with the screenshots posted it looks like he was already just hanging out waiting on someone to fight him.
But I'm also thinking that this may be a 72 hour spawn NM with Rose Garden-esqe behavior. WOuldn't be the first one that takes three days to pop, Taisaijin is the same way.
Anyhow, we're all trying various methods, and eventually one of us will uncover this god forsaken penguin. I will not stop until my BRD has a Birdman Cape or my DRG has Skanda Boots.
i've personally seen 4, how else did i make my sig?Originally Posted by KillerPLD
Well during my camping of 24+ plus I rode the boat from Nash > Urg non stop with my HP set in Nashmau so I didn't miss a single boat. And sometimes when the boat from Whitegate was coming in to port... bodies of level 75 players have spilled out occasionally. When I asked them if Proteus did it, they answered yes... but I never noticed any change of Apkallu activity on my Nash > Urg boats and I rode the boat for a long time even after the Proteus situation.
I'm honestly out of ideas then, as crazy as it may sound about Protues and AA being linked it doesn't hurt to test it out. But according to the research I gathered earlier I find it hard to believe SE wants you to not kill Apkallu on the boat from Nash > Urg for over 24 hours because that is how long they were left untouched and AA never popped... and not seeing him for 24 hours either rules out the 21-24 hour spawn idea too... there needs to be another condition to making him pop
No way in heck am I gonna stay up for 72 hours >.>Originally Posted by BroodIfrit

lurked awhile *yes read entire thread*, i know rose garden was mentioned but has anyone thought of the even more elusive noble mold as a similar pop condition *seasonal + 21hr*, considering all the recent sighting happened in a very close time frame and now AA dropped off the grid again sounds plausible, maybe a mating season or something![]()
Yep there's a whoosh in here somewhere.Originally Posted by Koyuki

Perhaps Proteus is the trigger that opens AA's Window. Killing Proteus will open AAs window in the Nash > WG Boat for a specific amount of time until it closes or until AA Pops. Since AA "is lonely" he will only spawn on that one specific boat ride, and if he isn't killed, despawns at the end of the boat ride and his window closes and Proteus must be killed again in order for his window to re-open.
Proteus is known to be a shape-shifter in mythology, so Proteus could be Almighty Apkallu simply transformed into a more non-threatening form, and killing his initial form is what forces him to shape-shift.

This may be derailing, and I'm not 100% sure, but aren't the two Orobon NMs on the Mhaura > Whitegate (and Whitegate > Mhaura) on the same timed spawn? If so, this could be a trend with the other boats, too. Also, the pirates seem to attack one or the other ship, so it's almost as if they share the same timer, but are two different zones.
I dunno, just tossing ideas out there.
while i'm not biting on your justification, this is what i was driving at. it's another theory, and a longshot at that, but there are a few accounts that give it a little cadence. i'm reminded of the orcish panzer which when killed, can sometimes pop an NM. yes. there are a laundry list of differences between the two situations, not the least of which is that they pop in the same zone with a clear cause/effect reaction, but it's still a loose example that the idea has crossed the dev team's mind before.Originally Posted by Pendas
Can't multiple Apkallus be up at once but be the same DAT? And my memory may be a bit off but I remember 3 apkallus. It may have been 2 up then 1 popped as I killed the second. It was a weird deal either way. I'm not sure if I have pics or not, as this was a while ago.
EDIT: I found SSs and it was actually the wrong boat. OPE It was 2 Apkallu > I killed one > another repopped. Sorry.

They heard it from their JP friend.
You have to be in a costume so he thinks nobody is on the boat.

Doesn't like being Left Alone, Lonely, same thing.A2: While we don't want to ruin everyone's fun by telling you exactly when and how he appears, because so many at the festival showed interest in the NM, we've decided to reveal a few cryptic hints that may or may not make the hunt a little easier.
* First of all, luck plays a big role in whether he appears or not.
* He doesn't like being left alone, and will wander off if no one is around to keep him company.

Anyone care to explain what exactly this means? By the guide on the first page it looks like it popped and depopped with 100% HP. But I'm not very good with this program. Also, is there anyway of telling how many times it has popped?

No, it's not the same thing
Fallacy of equivocation. If i don't like being left alone, does that make me lonely? If I don't like having an empty stomach, does that make me hungry?
