I would argue that the definition is arbitrary but all the homophobes don't have to worry, DOMA isn't going anywhere anytime soon (Even though it violates states rights, and is unconstitutional under the Full Faith and Credit Clause). These are the same arguments which tried to stop interracial marriages in the past so in my opinion the government should be forced, and get with the changing times.

I guess everyone involved in the support, creation and ratification of a constitutional amendment hates the Constitution.

And I do believe that consensual marriage is a liberty that ought to be protected.

    Give it a break.

Are you fucking serious? Let's play hypothetical here: The government has the power to declare someone a citizen. So why should they be forced to declare someone a citizen if they don't want to? I think they should get the same benefits/rights/responsibilities etc, but by definition a citizen is a landowning male. Call them a plebeian or something and give them the same rights.

I'd buy this if it worked out that way in reality. But 'separate but equal' has enjoyed anythying but a rich, successful legislative history that makes everybody happy.

is it ironic i support ron paul and also support gay marriage?

Leave it to the people to decide, not mandated

P.S. the majority of america doesn't want gay marriage, and it's not because they are homophobes

All it takes to "not be a homophobe" is to say "I'm not a homophobe but..." before your statement denying gays equal rights.

What is the legitimate legal argument against gays marrying that isn't rooted in fear/dislike/distrust of gays again?

    haha well said.

This is an issue with a shelf life, the vast majority of younger people don't care or agree that gays should have equal rights. That doesn't mean we should be indifferent while the older generation is in power, but just wanted to put it in some context. That is why the current congress tries to pass things like the Marriage Protection Act which prohibits any further altering of the legislation (DOMA) and even judicial challenges on this issue. Something politically popular doesn't mean its 'right.' If it was there would still be segregation.

Ya, i guess some gays fear/hate/distrust themselves. My mom that only has gay friends must really hate them all too.

Well, have at it then - why doesn't your mom want gays to be allowed to marry?

Oh, I forgot the other way to not be homophobic is to say "I have gay friends..." right before the thing that prevents equal rights for gays.

Can someone state a good reason to not allow gay marriages that isn't rooted in religious beliefs or homophobia?

I have gay, black, latino, asian, jewish, muslim, and buddhist friends.

Only white christians should be able to legally marry.

Yes, everything is relative. I feel smarter just reading some of these posts.

Normally I'd assume sarcasm, but after some of the absurdity in this topic I can't really be sure.
