Peter Jackson screened 10 minutes of 3D footage from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey at CinemaCon, the National Association of Theater Owners’ annual convention — including a lot of the helicopter shots foreshadowed in his production videos, plus a new scene that didn’t appear in Tolkien’s original book.

As fans of the book know, the wizard Gandalf tends to disappear for long stretches of time, leaving Bilbo and the Company of Thorin to fend for themselves. Well, Jackson has inserted some of Gandalf’s adventures into An Unexpected Journey.

In one of the scenes shown at CinemaCon, Gandalf tells the White Council about his journey to the Crypt of the Witch-King, and then he’s shown in the crypt, where he encounters Radagast the Brown, the nature-loving wizard who was written out of the Lord of the Rings films.

The footage ended with Bilbo meeting Gollum, who apparently looked amazing in 3D at 48 frames per second.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released on December 14, 2012, followed by There and Back Again on December 13, 2013.

Perhaps I'm a total fanboy, but Jackson proved himself 10x over in LOTR imo, so I don't see him fucking this up.

There were parts of the originals that were kinda meh. Overall they were good but I don't think I will ever watch them... ever... again. Hobbit though, was by far the best book of any of them.

I have the box set of each of the films (the ones with the Weta statues). Since they came out I've watched The Return Of The King more than the rest of them combined. The battles, the ending, the music, all make that one my favourite. The Hobbit book though, I read that in my early teens and don't recall much more than lots of songs, barrels and trees.

the 48 fps shit is getting killed by people. if it looks like how they are describing then i think it will be awful. the soap opera look really takes away from the experience imo. it looks like im watching a play or something.

I don't know if it was just me, but some scenes from the Cabin in the Woods had the tv feel about it. It was very quick but threw me for the few seconds it was there.

Film, is done at 24fps, american animation is done usually at around 24fps, anime's are done generally 6-12fps, TV, is done at 30fps. The higher the frame rate when it's filmed at normal speed, essentially means the realer it will look. Also the reason NTSC (American) and PAL (BBC) looks different is because PAL is done at 25fps.

Either way it's kind of retarded, people want more HD and higher definition, but in all reality watching a film in that state looks jarring and unpleasant to the eye. Films look like you can reach out and touch them. The Hobbit movies will be released at 48fps, with I think it was something like 5000dpi some retarded resolution, while this would be great for IMAX theaters, it will look horrible aesthetically any where else.
