I think it's hilarious some people actually believe SE are behind the account hackings.

It's a whole new brand of conspiracy theorists.

    Re: Another useless gm ftw

the OP is exactly the reason why people hate going into customer service-related jobs.

You can't blame the individual for the company's policies. The man said his hands were tied about this, it doesn't mean you can bully him into doing something he can't do.

Think of it this way: some random person calls a GM, saying they stole his account and he's on another person's account to report it. Only the stolen account? Its yours. You created it, play it, and pay for it. The random person is just some noob who wants you to get in trouble. He asks the GM for a 72 hour ban to take care of the situation (calling support, whatever). The GM grants it, and bans your account for 72 hours without warning you. The random noob does nothing for 72 hours except laugh at you for being banned for no reason.

Would you like that? Of course not. thats why GMs can't ban accounts for no reason.

And of course I was assuming that you were the actual account owner. and that you could have provided account information if you wanted to. But of course you couldn't, so realistically you might as well have been the noob in my example.

Sucks that his account was stolen, but you're an idiot for expecting a fix from someone who can't do anything about it. Next time ask your neighbor to do it.

And what happens when you upgrade your PC/burn through your 3rd PS2/etc? Do you expect people to keep playing on the same crappy P4 they've had since back in 2003? This is just a poor solution.

This is much more reasonable. Most if not all home security companies will have you provide a pass phrase in the event your system is tripped. They will call your phone number and you have tell them the pass phrase to guarantee that you are a resident and not an intruder. Granted we're talking about video game accounts and not homes, but the concept is the same. As a part of the account (not content ID) activation process require a call to POL to set up a pass phrase before the account may become active. Once you've called and set things up, POL provides an authorization key you must enter to complete activation. This process wouldn't even require speaking to an actual person, it could be automated. If you ever run into a problem with your account they just need to ask you for your pass phrase, though I still think that other static personal identification should be required.

As a rule any data that can be updated, especially by the user, should never solely be used to uniquely identify someone. Your credit card number, address, phone number, etc; these can all change over time and make poor identifiers. Your date of birth, city/state you were born in, mother's maiden name, etc. do not change and make much better identifiers. Combine uniquely identifying information along with a pass phrase and now you've got something.

and cos someone might get your passphrase, you need another passphrase to reset your passphrase but someone might get that as well so they should make a passphrase that resets the passphrase passphrase.

    No, you're just an idiot.

Passphrases, at least in the direct case of this example, for alarm systems, are never entered anywhere electronically. They are given by voice over the phone and you keep them written down on a piece of paper in your wallet or desk or something.

    Keylog that.

Un-realistic ideas for video game account security ftw. You realize the simple solution would be having to re-input the CC info on the account before you change your password? That way someone could log your password & POL ID, but it won't mean jack shit because they can't change your password without comitting CC fraud/theft.

It might inconvieniance the user a little bit if everytime you wish to change your password you had to input the information, but it would probably be the simplest solution to the problem, as well as one of the easiest/most realistic.

Too many people play on multiple machines for that to work. Its silly.

To the OP: You should have known that calling a GM was stupid, especially if you've been bothering to read these forums in, oh, lets say, the last month or so. If you're in here looking for sympathy, cool, but don't sit here and bitch about GMs when you KNEW going in to it that they weren't going to do anything for you. You got angry at someone who didn't even do anything and at someone you KNEW had no power to do anything with it.

Mistake #2: Post the dumbest thing that I have seen on any FFXI forum in months.

Seriously if it was SE, wouldn't you think they'd have the resources to either (a) Hack into your account and leave no trace of it -- leaving you naked in your MH, or (b) I donno, just generate the items/gil on their own and hand it off to RMT.

I heard George W was a FFXI fan. Its obvious its his fault... DUH!!!

Seriously though all this garbage of blaming SE is comical. The majority of the hackings can and always will be the players error. This case is the same

I personally think you are a jackass for being so stupid and not being able to understand that a GM's powers are limited. Its retards like you that makes it a pain in the ass for people reporting actual things that need to be reported.

Thanks for being a waste of space.

And the people who visited Somepage to get information on how to make Sis Kebabi deserved to get hacked? I think not.

How about the people who used Friends List Plus, or the LS Community Beta. Did they deserve to get hacked?

I didnt say they deserved it, but to blame SE is idiotic. Seriously you have more of a leg to stand on by blaming Somepage or George Bush for that matter.

What if my account is hacked outside of Information Center business hours?

If you can still access your account, please take the following steps and change your PlayOnline password immediately:
    "PlayOnline Viewer" -> "Service&Support"->"Membership"->"PlayOnline ID"->"Change Password"
If you have a separate account, please log into that account and make a GM call.

can I wiretap it instead? (a scary world indeed where you get hacked via wiretap - although with VOIP it's getting easier to do.)

BTW for the record I do blame George Bush for a great many things going on right now in the world.. but he would not be there without the unfortunate sheep-herd mentality of many Americans.

anywho! GMs are just worthless these days overall, we know what they can do and we know what they cant, in general calling them when you know they wont help is just going to give you a headache unless by some off chance you get one of the 1% of GMs that are useful and/or have the power to do something(sGM, or just a nice normal one)
