Cuban cigars, more like shitty cigars.

So a friend of mine recently got a shitload of cuban cigars from somewhere and decided to give me about five of them. The thing is, after smoking one, I've concluded that they taste like cum.

cuban cigars = shitty cigars, although the only thing I've ever smoked/smoke is benson and hedges ultralights. I thought they'd be so much better.

Ive only had two cubans a few years ago when it came time for them to be legal to smoke on a cruise we were on, I thought they were kinda decent. Then again, thats been my first and last time ive smoked anything >.>

I really enjoy cigars, being from the U.S. I don't have a legal means of getting cubans, fuck you embargo. I usually just sneak 2 boxes home with me each year when I go on vacation.

Romeo & Julietta are very good as well as the Cohiba.


If you're just starting out with cigars you want to try a mild smaller cigar and work your way up to the more fuller, robust cigars.

how long had they been out of the humidor before you got them? it only takes a couple days tops for one to dry out to the point of affecting the flavor.

Actually some of the premium aged cubans can remain out of the humidor for some time. I doubt this dude had any cigars that would qualify though since he got them for free.

You probly got a shitty batch. Cigars are one of those things that really depend on quality. Ive had a few Cubans before and the cheap ones($1-15 range) are usually crap to somewhat decent. You have to get to the $20 range for the really good ones. The best one Ive ever had a friend bought for me and was $27 USD- but was worth every penny.

Romeo & Julietta is probably my favorite of the Cubans I've tried. I bought 2 to smoke with my pops when I was coming home from Mexico. I don't really like smoking tobacco, but these cigars were nice. Price wise they were about $18 USD, but i haggled the dude and got 2 for $25.

I grabbed a Box of the Romeo and Juliets Cubans while I was in Dominican Republic. They really are fantastic.

I also grabbed a box of Local Domican Cigars, I don't remember the brand but they weren't to bad either and they turned out to be like $8/each USD when I figured it out from the price of the Box.

Buying cigars anywhere other than the duty free shop at the airport is very risky if you don't know what you're looking for. My friend came back from Mexico with a box of what he thought were Cuban Cohibas, after looking at them and smoking one they were definetly not Cohibas.

The local guys like to switch the rappers and sell the cheap shit as expensive cigars. A good practice if your shopping for cigars abroad is to ask to sample one. 90% of the places (outside of the airport duty free) will have no problem with this. Then, if that cigar suits you, ask them to buy the box that cigar came from. If there's a couple cigars missing from that box (sold as singles), open the box they pull for you and compare the shape, color, size, and smell to the one you sampled.

Just because a cigar is from Cuba doesn't mean it's going to be amazing. There's a tobacconist shop in my city that's been in continual business in the same location since 1880 and sells a wonderful assortment of fine cigars - many Cuban, but also from other countries too. I used to smoke cigars for special occasions, but I don't really have any friends that partake anymore so I do miss it.

Good Cuban brands:
-Diplomaticos (my favourite)
-Cohiba (get the higher quality lines, their lower stuff just tastes like ass)
-Romeo e Julieta (not my taste, but some people swear by them)

Oh yeah, and if you buy anything that comes in an individually wrapped plastic wrapper it's going to taste like smoking a goat's tail. Never, ever, ever buy those - they are very cheap and the flavour and moisture have all evaporated from the tobacco leaves. Always buy from a shop's humidor and, if you don't have your own humidor, smoke them the same day/night as you buy them.
