I don't understand... isn't that what a quest is all about...?
No, not when you start a quest and the NPC(s) in the cutscene don't give you enough information for you to know what to do next. I lost count at the amount of times I was completely lost in a quest only to find out that I had to go to an entirely different zone, buy an item from an NPC that was never mentioned in the cutscenes, and hand it in to another NPC that was also never mentioned in the cutscenes in order to continue the quest. Or how about when you start a quest and there isn't much information given to you in the cutscene but when you check your quest log it says a vague statement such as "NPC wishes to fix her mom's old broken pan."
and SE says that you dont need 3rd party sources....

    They just want you to look for shit mindlessly so you play longer >.>;
I remember this conversation from last night while we played FFXII. :3 Remember the gates? Yeah...

At least in an offline RPG you can look it up without SE screaming down your throat that your a 'cheating bastard' >.>

Half the things in FFXI are impossible without the lookups or research, and if you tried it any other way you'd be running into trial and error wasting tons of time.

Knowing SE's mentality, they'd probably tell you not to visit "third party" sites for 12 either. >.>

I think if you look to FFXI to feel a sense of accomplishment, youre going to be very disappointed by it.
Isn't the sense of accomplishment what MMORGS are all about? One of the main reasons why MMORGS are online in the first place is so that everyone else can see what you have accomplished in the game. I would venture to say that the great majority of people on these forums are proud of what they have achieved in this game and therefore, feel a sense of accomplishment. The sense of accomplishment, in any form, is a good and legitimate feeling. In my opinion accomplishment can be felt (albeit in varying degrees) from MMORGS as well as in other facets of life such as school or in the workplace.

If you look back at my original post, I mention that I still enjoy playing FFXI from time to time. Also, I speak positively about many parts of the game within my post. I thought that some might like to hear that I found another positive in the game through Salvage. Anyway, I don't really expect to save face in any way because that's not really possible on these types of forums where there are no neutral outside parties to judge what is said. I knew that I would get some flaming for this post because of the fact that it says some negative things about that game. I didn't think everyone was going to agree with what I said.

Seriously though, this is the newbie section. You should expect to see posts like this in the newbie section. My original post is merely my opinion on the expansions. The post is not all positive and it's not all negative. Take this stuff as lightly as possible, if I wanted to make a more serious post I would have put it in the advanced section.

Lastly, I want to thank Elesar for making the only on-topic post that actually offered real, introspective, advice on my question.

    and Sparthos:

I sincerely hope you're right. If you are, then everyone who had faith in WoTG can say a collective: "I told you so" to me as well as the other ppl who are down on WoTG . (Also, I was really sorry to hear about what happened to Jeny, I hope that gets worked out some way. That incident was actually one of the things that sparked some of my recent negative feelings towards SE.)

Yes, they're impossible, the only way to figure out how to do things is by reading the SE strategy guides...wait, no. Everything online has been figured out by people who have already done so, thus it being possible. The idea is that you should explore the game and immerse yourself in it, thus you'll find your way to quests eventually. Granted, this is far from perfect (since quests have a poor interface and should have in-game "steps" you go through like a journal-ish thing) but it's still possible to do it on your own.

    Re: A Long-time Player's Perspective: History of Vana'diel

I think the OP's concern was addressed in an earlier post...someone mentioned BigKills, and that seems to be what the OP is looking for. I remember the days when my old LS cleared the lolBigKills list, and we were pretty damn proud of it. There's something about taking down giant monsters, while other LS's can only stand by and watch. Sure, it's a bit of e-peen flaunting, but I think most people would be lying if they said they didn't enjoy it.

ToAU went away from that concept, towards more instance encounters. The upside of this is, hey..everybody gets to play. The downside is, nobody else sees you do it, except for the group of friends you roll with. What kind of content you want depends on what you're looking for. Personally, although I love having Nyzul, Salvage, and Assaults ready for me every day, I actually miss the old LS rivalries that went with overworld HNMs. It was almost like a sport to me.

Actually, you're correct, I just don't have the moderation staff to catch this in time. Please PM me next time you have an issue. And Skurlover, welcome to your 3 day warning ban. (3 days and not permanent because it's Christmas and I'm feeling generous)

Yes, the OP wasn't exactly making a positive post but is entitled to his opinions, there is room for discussing and debating issues and not everyone will agree with what everyone else thinks. However, shit like this doesn't fly.

Don't tell people on these forums what to do, that's mine and the rest of the admin/moderator staff's job. Thanks.

And Pacha, while discussing how you feel about certain issues, try not to be nasty or you will be finding yourself in the same place as Skurlover.

No, not at all. I feel MMOs are supposed to be about fun with friends, which is the extent of what it should be. Getting good gear and killing hard monsters is part of that fun. I feel seeking accomplishment as a sense of self gratifiction in an MMO is fleeting because once the respective company pulls the plugs on the servers or you cancel your supscription, it has lost all its meaning and importance. Side from the relationships you make along the way, the MMO leaves you no better than you were before.

.Lately there has been a lot of reason to moderate people's posts out of the newbie section for trolling.
Am I mistaken or has "posting despite one's actual beliefs for the sole purpose of getting contrary responses" suddenly been removed from the definition of trolling? You egg people on with bullshit posts then it's his fault for calling you stupid? Fuck that noise.

No Ryko, you're correct in that if someone says "FFXI SUX LOL DISCUSS" it would be considered trolling. However, what Pacha did was explain his feeling towards the game and in my opinion was looking to see if it was him that the game was losing it's touch for or if other people felt the same way. Every other person in this thread besides Skurlover has contributed to the conversation. Typing in a thread "didn't read what you said", "stop QQing" and you're a retard" without saying a single word about the actual conversation is trolling. There is no way a conversation like this is going to stay as nice as we'd hope but everyone is entitled to their opinions. Stating something that has nothing to do with the original conversation and just posting to make yourself out to be a badass and up your post count is not allowed in this forum.

newbie section was originally meant for people to ask questions like "if i have a Scorpion Harness +1 do i still need to buy a Haubergeon to level SAM?".

bringing a stupid discussion topic here doesn't qualify you under the newbie protection clause.

    1) long time player - not newbie (unless asking about a job he never played before)
    2) state/future of the game - not a newbie topic
    3) history of the game - not a newbie topic
    4) expansion discussion - not a newbie topic (since not asking about how to do stuff)

Its evolution baby, newbie has evolved, and thus the rules now at the top which were missed too often before
This forum is a sanction for players who want to ask questions that would normally be laughed at in the advanced section. Lately there has been a lot of reason to moderate people's posts out of the newbie section for trolling. There were plenty of moments that people should have been banned but we have been lenient. Let me make this clear, from this point on, if you are caught trolling in this section you will be perma-banned. I have asked the moderators of the forums to keep a very close eye on this section because it's getting out of hand. If you can not read this section of the forums without being nasty, don't even click it.
Basically, at this point I’m seeking some advice. I really enjoy FF in general and I've had a lot of fun on FFXI and met a lot of people. I held onto hope that this game would improve despite all of these negative things that have come about in recent times. Thus, I would like the opinion of others about whether or not I should keep playing in hopes that something fun will be released or if I should just quit and play another game. In that situation, what other game would be good to play on PC besides FFXI?
From what I can see here, he is asking for advice without wanting to get railed, which you know as well as I will happen in the advanced discussion forum. While not exactly being "newbie" question, he is still asking for honest advice and is asking for honest answers other than "just quit" or "tl;dr" and this is the only forum he can ask those questions and get the advice he needs.
If you think this forum should be renamed (something Ive been throwing around in my mind) or we should tweak the rules to encompass everything you specified, then we can do that. But I thought this was pretty clear already.
