i always had great success using mnk mnk nin thf rdm brd (fife) for boss farming. it's mostly just about having practice and being prepared (oil/powder/rr/fanatics/bodyboost).

Pretty much the same decision as a merit party--either can work as long as the side being compromised is strong enough to compensate. 3 DD is plenty if they're good. We have THF DRK SAM and the only time we've timed out is when someone suffers a wtf death (rare).I'm confused now. I swear, before someone said a three-mage lineup was a pretty good approach, but now it sounds like people are having more trouble with having only three DD. Would it be a better idea to have BRD WHM RDM SAM WAR THF, or BRD WHM NIN SAM WAR THF? If it matters, the Warrior is pretty decked(Ridill, etc.), and the SAM and THF are pretty well equipped too.
Two healers is pretty nice for bosses since you can Paralyna people twice as fast, and no matter how much MP or skill a healer has, the fact remains you can only cast one spell at a time and there's always a chance that some soft target will get double-critted etc. while you're fiddling with the Haste/Refresh cycle. Dead or weakened DD will kill your damage output pretty fast. :]

Our main BLM only has PLD or SMN as other jobs and I didn't think they would be as useful as a BLM who pretty much solo's all the stupid puddings we keep getting.
Jobs that people can come in our group is:
Me - RDM, BLM, WHM, BRD, SMN, SAM, NIN, DRG
SAM, NIN
THF, WAR, NIN, PLD - Comes WAR on non Boss runs.
WAR, SAM, DRK
BRD
BLM, PLD, SMN
We also have 2 others who replace people when people can't make it:
WAR, PLD
BLM, WHM, MNK
Any suggestions on a better setup from this group?
I am usually RDM/WHM dedicated main healer and do have a WHM type macro pallete for Nyzul which I use (Thank you SE for Macro Books <3 ). I also have Dalmy and AF2 Hat so with the BRD and Sanction Refresh, mp isnt a problem for me (No Mage ToAU Refresh Ring as I chose Ulthalums). I might try WHM next time we go for Floor 80 tho and see how it works out. My WHM is decently enough geared and I also have a Magic Acc/Divine Magic setup for Repose so hopefully it should be ok for sleeps if needed. I am currently levelling SCH (50 atm) and am very much considering using that at 75 for main heal in Nyzul since basically Accession is <3 for Erases on Flayers etc and I still have the option of Enfeebles with Dark Arts and capped Enfeebling Merits and my RDM gear etc.
I prefer WAR/NIN, WAR/NIN, Melee, WHM, BRD, RDM/BLM but we're not that high so not sure if this continues to work well further up.
Id say the setup you have it probably the best possible one for your group. Like I said, my group never has problems with 4 dd 2 mages, but looks like 3 mage back line groups can do it just as well. If you have your brd pulling I dont see it taking that much longer then just having 2 groups of DD DD Mage roaming. Only time I can see a possible advantage is when you have 2 directions to go in our way might be slightly faster. Other then that your setup is fine, maybe just a little streak of bad luck.Originally Posted by Alibeemac
For what its worth, my group splits up into teams when called for, and I have little trouble being a healer for two DD as Bard.
Just a note, on the ToAU Boss floors (Hydra / Khimaira / Cerberus ), it's a toss up if the BLM to kill Jellies and Amorphs (hi2u Sewer Syrup) is a better choice than SMN, who will be capable of dealing decent damage on the ToAU Bosses. YMMV.Originally Posted by Kylen
situational imo
For 20 and 40 boss floors, we do nin/war rdm/whm brd/whm blm/whm thf/nin (DO NOT DO NYZUL WITHOUT A THF imo >.> ) and war/nin
The boss's are easy enough to handle with my just healing and still plenty of mp for hastes and all that junk if you don't suck. On "defeat all" floors, we split: rdm blm nin and thf brd war. Gets things done faster that way we have found (we can do this because the brd is relic <3 ).
On boss floors 60 80, we do rdm/whm brd/whm (who is the blm before) nin/war war/nin thf/nin and whm/blm (who is the brd from before). Blm is near useless on the boss's so ya...
Not to be pompous, but the key for us really comes down to how well I manage mp and perform, with huge emphasis also on the bard. If your bards or rdms suck, you are going to have problems all the time.
Well Gjallarhorn gives a huge advantage, but even if you don't have a GjallaBRD tell them to not be a lazy/cheap bastard and get a Storm Fife, Ballad +1 helps alot as well.
Or you know, help them get it since you're on a Nyzul team with them.Originally Posted by Seditedi
Problem with that is, if they don't already have one and are running Nyzul 7 tags a week, how are they going to get it? Dedicated Nyzul attendance means you can't run other Assaults. It's not being lazy/cheap, it's just logistics.Originally Posted by Seditedi
Would be nice if Nyzul tokens could be used as AP but sadly that is not the case.
Posting in Nyzul thread:
Our group has 4 shots at floor 20 bosses tonight (our first attempts). I don't really anticipate any problems but I had a few last minute questions:
1) Do we need chest items for the bosses or do 20F bosses just go down easy?
2) Any problems with War/nin, Drg/whm, Brd, Rdm, Drk, Thief setup?
If your rdm is good he should be able to handle the healing fine for a floor 20 boss. I'd have melees each grab a fanatics and the rdm grab a mana boost just to be on the safe side tho, those meds really work wonders
It's hard to generalize about 20F/40F boss since there's "Fafnir" and "not Fafnir".
The Behemoth and Adamantoise are squishy and mostly harmless, Fafnir is evasive + defensive and wingspammy. It's like a roll of the dice: you can fight a kitten, a puppy, or a menopausal emu with PTSD.
A variety of party setups will work as long as everyone has the correct instincts to compensate for whatever you're shorthanded on.
just to report back..
We used 4 tags
1st: got 2x kill all frogs, then activate sequence lamps (fail)
2nd: got 11 discholder lvl16
3rd: used that disc, 19th floor sequence lamps bs (fail)
4th: went up on my lvl16 disc, despite two lamp levels, engaged behe @10min or so, smoked him in less than 5min, drop Askar Gambieras! (and floor21 access).
I figure thats a good day in Nyzul =)
If you want to bring any chest items, have 2 or 3 people grab cleric's drinks in case of Fafnir. On our last Faffy, myself and the MNK had them, and the mages only had to worry about blindna'ing us all once. Kept everyone's DoT up too, so there wasn't several minutes of whiffing while we waited for the mages to repeatedly blindna us.
2/4 runs this past week gave us 2x Askar feets. :D Only need 4 pairs of Goliard and 1 pair of Askar til we can start spamming 40! <_>;
Similarly, for 60-100, there's "Hydra" and "not Hydra".Originally Posted by Loren

but khim is pretty much a pushover, yeah :D
Every Boss has really been a pushover especially if you get Champion's/Soldier's/Monarch's. Last Hydra we killed didn't even lose a head D:Originally Posted by wintersquall
Question though, if Hydra has 3 heads up can it also do Physical Shield or is it only allowed to do Magical Shield?
