Re: Building a new computer (x2)

So I put it together today and it's not working. I get lights all over the place and I believe the hard drive boots up, but my graphics don't show up a bit and I get no POST beep either. There's a red light on the graphics card and I'm thinking my current one might not be strong enough. I got a PAC 550W power supply which is supposed to be the minimum I can use for my graphics card, but with a red light on the graphics card and things not booting up, I'm guessing it's not strong enough? The only other weird thing is that the card has an 8-pin slot but the only thing that hooks into it is a 6-pin (which also has a tag on it noting that it's for that graphics card so I know it's the right cord) but, still weird.

So, uhh, any ideas? Is the power supply too weak? There something else I'm missing that would result in no POST beep (I'm pretty sure I have the Speaker connector in the right place).

Should be fine with that psu... Check that everything is seated properly (Graphics card, memory) and you have all additional power sources plugged in (especially the one for the cpu).

Why didn't you buy the power supply I recommended?

What are the detailed specs on the PSU for the 12+v, it can be found on the label on the side.

You must connect two PCI-e 6 pins to the card. The 8 pin connector can take a 6 pin or an 8pin.

Oh, I was looking at the 512bit version.

If that micro red LED comes on and stays on for more than about 5 seconds after boot, it means you have a power issue. It's probably the PSU's fault, you might be able to get it to work, but it depends on the power it can output on the 12+v rail(s).

    If you bought this PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817708002 ....

Yeah that's the one I got, lol. The reason I have that instead of the one you recommended is that I had already put in my order when you recommended that one. Guess I'll be ordering a new power supply.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817341010 this one you suggested looks good. More power than my current one while also being of better quality. Brother only has $115 left in his account so can't get the more expensive Rosewill you recommended.

I was going to chew you out for buying that piece of crap PSU, but I won't now, seeing as you ordered it before I made the suggestion or whatever.

That OCZ should work great. I've got the 700w model which uses the same parts, but is rated for like 4 more amps or something. The 600w puts out a rated 48A across the 12+v rails, although thats probably with some load on the 3.3v and/or 5v rails. It should be good for 44-48A though no matter what, and they are known to be reliable.

Anyways, good choice, it should solve all your problems.
