Can't change recording source on soundcard

I can't seem to change my recording options via my volume control or any control that I can think of. I have a microphone equipped and it does work. Using my volume control (Win Xp SP3 Beta) I can hear sounds from my mic in playback, but when I go to recording options I can't select anything besides Stereo Mix. There are boxes to select CD, Line In, and Microphone, but I am unable to click in the box. It just highlights but won't put a checkmark in that box. I know that sounds weird, but it is! lol.

I have an AC 97 onboard sound with (I assume) the latest drivers (5.10). The newest I could find online were 4.03 and every server was down that had those files. I ran Win update and it said I had the newest drivers.

I ran the Sound Hardware Test Wizard and it gets to the step where you talk into the mic and adjust the levels. No sound is being recorded and when I click next it says that the wizard is unable to help because no sound was detected. But like I said, when I unmute my mic in playback I can hear myself through it, so I know it works.

Any help would be awesome!

out of the top of my head, something like file or sound or something (first tab in the top) and go to properties or whatever then switch to recording and press ok

Yea, when I do that I get to the recording volume screen, but I can't switch where it records from. The box is always checked under stereo mix and won't switch to any other boxes, it's really weird...
