Too much MND bad for Chi Blast damage, or some kinda fluke?

Recently, I bought several new pieces for my MND set for Chi Blast. Previously, my gear set looked as follows:

    Weapon: Kirin's Pole
    Sub:
    Head: Temple Crown
    Neck: Promise Badge
    Earring:
    Earring:
    Body: Kirin's Osode
    Hands: Temple Gloves/Devotee's Mitts
    Ring: Sapphire Ring
    Ring: Sapphire Ring
    Back: Melee Cape
    Waist: Al Zahbi Sash
    Legs: Temple Hose +1
    Feet: Suzaku's Sune-ate
    Food: Goblin Mushpot

With this setup, my MND was 65+75 (/PLD, I know, needs moar /WHM. ). I was doing 1200+ damage Chi Blasts a good portion of the time (11x Boost)

After upgrading my gear, my setup looked like this:

    Weapon: Kirin's Pole
    Sub: Raptor Strap +1
    Head: Temple Crown
    Neck: Promise Badge
    Earring: Communion Earring
    Earring: Communion Earring
    Body: Kirin's Osode
    Hands: Temple Gloves/Devotee's Mitts
    Ring: Aqua Ring
    Ring: Aqua Ring
    Back: Melee Cape
    Waist: Al Zahbi Sash
    Legs: Temple Hose +1
    Feet: Suzaku's Sune-ate
    Food: Goblin Mushpot

This setup pushes me to 75+83 MND. I don't think I've broken 800 once since I've upgraded.

I'm just wondering if I've done something terribly wrong when I bought new gear, or if I'm just getting a lot more resists now for some reason.

I don't know it for some reasons. However I notice 2 MNKs in my LS, both of them have mostly identical gears, one dealt like 1200+ damage while another dealt like 600-700ish to KB. Oh and btw they were wearing only Justaucorps+1 ... no Osode yet.

He listed Temple Gloves, so I'll assume he's boosting with them.

It would appear you're just getting resisted, but if it happens 100% of the time...? I dunno. Could be max unlucky fluke...? What mob were you Blasting on?

Yea more MND wouldn't have any adverse effects to your damage. The damage formula is calculated with the amount of MND you have so increasing MND would never decrease the damage. If you dropped to 800 it might just have to do with the mob you are blasting. If it's Cerberus or something, the stoneskin might be eating some of your damage, can only think of that or possibly a macro problem when you were changing in your new chi gear and AF1 hands aren't being equipped for boosts.

Sorry, didn't see them listed ><
Well then it's probabaly a resist or stoneskin thing, as said above. Kirin would be a pretty good testing ground for Chi Blast issues and damage range...too bad nobody does it the long and boring way anymore :/

Funny you should say that, the mob I have been testing on IS Kirin. =p I don't really have anything else to test on right now, only do Sky right now. =(

Only piece of Chi Blast gear I macro is the devotee's mitts in and out. I manually equip everything else.

But yeah, I seem to be getting resisted a lot then. =(

I've noticed (read "a year ago i thought this might happen but never tested it") that chi blast gets resisted or nerfed if you leave it longer after your last boost to the time you fire off the chi blast. Have you altered your macros at all that would cause extra delay?

Anytime I added mnd my damage went up assuming same number of boosts.

Might be good to add, since you're maxing it out in all other slots. ^^

That's weird then. Back when my old LS was doing 3-4 kirins in a row, each one taking 1h30 at least, we had much time to test various setups and it always went the way of "the more MND the better dmg", in a pretty much linear way.

The only reason for your trouble would be S-E adding some kind of "resist over time" on chi-blast, which I'm unaware of, mostly because I haven't Chi-blasted anything in the last 2 year...anyone remembers reading something like that during an update ?

Chi Blast and Spirits Within were both included in the "BLM Nerf" some time back, where if the only damage applied to an "Impossible to Gauge" mob were magic, the mob would gain increasing amounts of mdef and resistance. Melee hits reduce this mdef and resistance over time.

But I can only see this applying to you is if the only damage being done were from chi blast and magic - no melee. That doesn't make much sense for a Kirin, where even in traditional kiting style you're going to have sams and thfs and rngs whacking on it to make skillchains for magic bursts.

Re: Too much MND bad for Chi Blast damage, or some kinda fluke?

Oops, made the mistake of putting justice badge instead of promise badge. XD Only gear I could stand to upgrade to my knowledge is to get 2x celestial earrings, a moon sash/twinthread obi +1, temple crown +1, and devotee's +1. Someone clue me if there's anything else I can dream about upgrading to, and I'll fix the justice/promise mistake in a few.

As for the Chi Blast thingy being in the magic group, we're very limited on how much magic damage is done in the group. At most, we generally have two BLMs cause our other BLMs are needed elsewhere, and I don't hear them complain about resists. No one using Spirits Within to my knowledge. RDMs are sticking debuffs on him, but I wouldn't think that would add in near as much as other things, would it?

An enfeeble landing won't affect magic damage.

Technically, there is a waist item that gives +5 MND...Ksi Sash, but thats more of a pipe dream than the others, knowing the awesome drop rates I've gotten on Assault items thus far. Friend did just get one recently, though, so I guess there is hope.

Chi Blast doesn't resist. There's a range of damage it can do based on the amount of boosts and your MND (and whether you use the gloves), and that's all. The range isn't small, so you will see that range. You're just getting unlucky for the most part.

Also, I was under the impression that SE said Chi Blast and Spirits Within would affect the magic reduction levels, but they themselves wouldn't be affected.

Chi blast is definitely affected by monster MDB buildup.

If your chi blasting right after another mnk ive noticed it drops down too. Im am Elvaan w/ mnd merits from RDM. Back before i got rid of my chi gear i used to consistantly do 1700's w/ high of 2020 then last kirin i did i only broke 1000 once w/ 2 other mnks there chi blasting too. So if your blasting w/ another mnk time it out so your going min or so after them maybe.

I thought there was a "Max Usuable Attribute" added a LONG time ago. To unbreak Spiral Hell and a couple other WS's.

I've noticed when my STR is above 140 altogether I have note adding zero damage over 140STR flat. Tested on Boreal Hound a while back(Very easy for DRK to do with Absorb-STR). You may be just fine on your MND gear. Then again I may be wrong. Anyone else know about this "Attribute Cap?"

I used to do Kirin the "Traditional Kiting" method often enough. And it did seem to me that the Chi Blasts would lower in damage if we had 3+ Chi around the same time. I had the pleasure of doing the DD rotations. So it was easy for me to annotate the fight's progress.

MDB resistance disappears quite quickly, so unless your monks are blasting simultaneously instead of rotating, they won't notice it.
