E6600 and 8800GTX cooling solutions

Air cooling =/= water cooling, and uh, I'm not trying to convert anyone that has already found something they're comfortable with... I was merely giving a suggestion to someone who was wondering. Also, Tidewater = hueg like Xbox and water cooling in general can be a pain in the ass.

The Tidewater isn't even that good, I wasn't suggesting it as a choice, just that you should be getting into the 50-60C range with aftermarket coolers. A Thermalright HR-03 Plus is better than a Tidewater or VF900 and looks better too.

LOL settle down yous two... All I care about is keeping my CPU very cool for the cheapest amount. I want to avoid my last PC build were after a few months the case would always get very warm.



Do you guys think that a 600 watt PSU is sufficient enough to run the 1 card. Or should I just spend the 40 bucks more and hit the 750 watts? I may put a second card in around the spring/summer.

600W is way more than enough, and 750W would be complete overkill. You could even get away with a 500, but for future-proofness I guess stick with the 600.

What are the brands and models of the PSUs? You could very easily buy a 550 watt PSU that can't power your rig.

I don't think you realize just how hot the 8800 line of cards run. 60 idle and 80 under load are considered within operational limits. No matter how much air you move out of the case, it's still going to run hot, especially since most of these cards are already factory overclocked and people take them further. I really doubt the brand or type of aftermarket cooling matters. 72 under load is hardly "doing it wrong" with this type of card. I dunno if Mr. Zalman murdered your family or whatever, but it's a fine brand of fans. No better or worse than Thermaltake, but still a fine brand.

They both come with the same case. The second one however also comes with the CPU, 2gig of ram and Mobo. I was already planning on getting the same CPU, the same mobo and ram sticks. In the end when you add it all up the second option will be 30 bucks cheaper for 150 less watts.

As it sits I have 2 120mm fans I will use for the back of my case and the front. I have a fan that goes into a PCI slot. I have a new sound card. A new network card, I have new cd burners and dvd burner, a 320gig HD + my old 160gig HD which is all I am taking from my old system..So I am half way to being set to build my PC. The only thing left is to decide if buying the pieces or is the barebones kit the better offer.

I never did mention this but I game on my system but I am not hardcore about it. I think the brunt of my computer time revolves around 3-d animation.So I am not even sure if I should go with the 8800 or go with the 8600 GTS XXX.

Lol, right. Stock cooling a) sounds like a F16 is taking off in your tower, and b) is NO WHERE NEAR as good as aftermarket cooling. When I first got my card I could easily bring it close to 100C with stock cooling.

And again, I wasn't playing a Tower Defense applet in Firefox or anything, I was playing CoD4.

My stock fan had to run at full speed just to avoid overheating. An that was just me in Bib Bay exping by myself. Thats why I am looking for a 3rd party cooler. Because I have no faith in stock coolers. I have had a couple people tell me Zelmans was good as well as a couple other mentioned here. But I never used anything other then stock so I thought Id ask..

You didn't state the specific graphics card, the topic did.

You also quoted someone talking ABOUT the 8800's. The fact of the matter is you can't compare whatever card you have to the 8800's as they're completely different in terms of stock fan performance.

Who the hell cares what he posted, the point is to help the OP not distract him with other graphics cards while trying to pretend like you can actually compare the two.

To be completely honest, the stock cooler on 8800gts/gtx is perfectly fine. The only thing I would recommend is upping the % to 80 with rivatuner.

I'm not "distracting" him at all, I forwarded him to the Zalman selection of GPU coolers (the one I'm using, for instance, doesn't support the 8800), not just one cooler. Also, knowing both cards run hot, I gave him a temperature I had while playing a demanding game. Not sure who's dick you woke up with in your mouth today.

Seems to me that more people are just uneducated about the new high temps of modern graphics cards. Contrary to popular belief, the 8800's don't need after-market coolers to run "safe"....No where near so.

I don't care about noise I cranked my GPU fan to 100% (99.0% because nvidia control panel is gay) and my temperatures run comfortably now ('-'*)
