I was going to post the same shit... LOL

I swear to god my dick/nuts shriveled into my body when that shit happened, I didnt expect that shit
(I was playing late night/lights off/no 1 home except me and my brand new copy of RE1)

    The intro movie for RE didnt help my fright, I was maybe 15-16, but alone in a house with no 1 around, and your room is right next to the backyard, which looks like the Cryptkeepers, its not so much fun ; ;

    Re: Scary Video Games!

You guys think that shit is scary? You want to know something scary? I'll tell you something scary.

Super Mario Brothers 3 for the Nintendo. Yeah. You heard me.

What's so scary about it? Oh, its not Giant Land. Its not Grass Land, and its not Pipe Land, its not nothing. Except for world 3-8.

That's right, world 3-8. You're just walking around, you know, playing Mario. The level rises and falls into the water, you don't think anything of it. You get a mushroom, everything is all fine, right.

But then you reach that path of breakable blocks and that one solitary Koopa. You decide to go for it. There has to be a secret in those blocks. THERE HAS TO BE.

You stomp the Koopa, you kick the shell (being wary not to get hit on the rebound) and you break those blocks. A power-up is relinquished from the furthest box. You move in to get it. The water starts to fill the area as it sinks. You're so close, you can taste it.

But suddenly, a red fish bursts forth from the water. He didn't give you any warning. He just fucking came for you. It was so fast if you blinked you would've missed it. You don't know what to do, so you jump back, but there's no where else to go but forward from here. You have to keep going. You have to.

You run away, and the fish is gone. Maybe it gave up? You stand on top of the tower that does not submerge. You think its safe and jump down, but you see that red fish. Its blank eyes staring at you runs a chill down your spine. You run. It chases. The water completely submerges the area. You can't swim faster than it does. ITS COMING. OH SHIT, ITS COMING. YOUR DONE. ITS OVER. YOU WON'T MAKE IT.

Your feet touch solid ground. The water level drops as the area returns to above sea level. You jump onto a floating ? block. The fish swims beneath you. Its not going to go away. It just circles. And circles. You have to go down eventually. You decide to make a leap of faith. "I'll jump on the fish" you think. That should kill it, that is more than enough for any other monster. So you wait and time your jump. And land on its head. You can feel its skull crush beneath your feet, its brains squeezing out from the broken shards of bone.

Triumphant, you cheer. You continue on with your journey, nothing can stop you now! But in the corner of your eye, you see him. You see that red fish. "How... how can you be alive? I killed you! HOW ARE YOU HERE!?" you cry as it dashes towards you. You can't do anything, the water is too high, you're done. Darkness envelopes you.

BOOP! BUM DUM BUDUMDUM BUDUMDUM BUDUUUUUM.

You get kicked out of the level, and you're just sitting there, on that block that says 8, in world 3. The bridge behind you is up, and you don't have any Clouds. There's no way around it, you have to go back in. You let out a sigh and hit A. You will always be afraid of that fish. It is relentless. It does not have a heart and will not listen to reason. You are its prey, and that's all. You can overcome the fish, but never your fear.

Heaven or Hell, red fish, let's rock!

Oh man you hit the nail on the head. Nothing really scared me too much in RE4 until those fucking things. Any time I heard them coming I got so freaked out.

    Re: Scary Video Games!

Silent Hill one scared the shit out of me. A friend and I stayed up all night playing to finish it and when we got near the lighthouse running from the Motel it was like 5am, pitch black and these monkey fucking ape things were trying to dry hump Harry's ass as we ran him to the lighthouse. I almost shit myself, that game was fucking scary. I don't think I've ever been as relieved as when the school turned from "dark" silent hill to "foggy" silent hill. I also remember being in the hospital and my friend was like "we have to go to the nurses station" and I was like "fuck that, I don't ever want to see a demonic nurse again". SH2 was scary in a different way. I found it pretty peaceful and almost serene, but creepy. Silent Hill 3 was scary too, but just because it was so bad it was scary.

RE2 also scared the shit out of me the first time I played that, with two other friends there. At one point a dog jumped out and it shit my friend right up and she shrieked and I think that made things worse. We were in a giant old house alone too, late at night. Every creek you had to look over your shoulder just incase.

    Re: Scary Video Games!

Judging from the responses, I'd assume most of you are younger than I am (I'm 27). Resident Evil 1 came out when I was like...16ish, and that first dog jumping through the window scared the absolute fuck out of myself and the other probably 5 14-16 year olds watching me play.

However, I thought of something super old school, and I hope someone can back me up.

Shadowgate for the original NES was completely fucked up. Open the wrong door? Die. Wait too long watching that blinking pair of eyes (...dragon eyes) at the end of the corridor? Die by dragon fire burning your shit. Pull open that little pet hatch? Die by chupacabra munching on you. Lit torch runs out? Die by broken neck from falling. The whole goddamn game was trial and error, and if you chose wrong? Die.

In fact, virtually any action taken by the player which is not the correct solution to a puzzle will result in a fatality. These deaths were often graphically described in the game's text, even in the NES version (regardless of Nintendo's policy of censorship at the time).
That shit was -WAY- too much to handle at 9 years old (in 1989). I had fucking nightmares about it, that I was going to make the wrong decision and die. Ended up trading it to one of my brother's older friends for Super Mario Bros. 3. Thank god.

That all being said, my limited experience with the Silent Hill series leads me to believe it's the most WTF WHY nighmare-inducing game for adults.

    Re: Scary Video Games!

I think it's funny this topic came up, I've been trying to play (finish for the first time) Resident Evil 2 since yesterday. Shit still scares me, did back when it was released too. The worst was the first RE though with that fucking dog jumping through that fucking yellow hallway like someone else mentioned. Then I'm playing RE2 and going down some hallway and fucking zombie arms burst through the goddamn windows and grab Leon, FUCK. Then you go to the library or whatever in the police station, go upstairs and fall through the fucking floor, FUCK. It's not even what happens that scares me, it's the goddamn noises.

I tried playing Silent Hill once. Didn't last long, the opening part where I guess you're supposed to get stabbed to hell by some weird things in an alley was supposed to happen, didn't really scare me because it wasn't shocking, shit just happened. But that flying demon monkey thing bursting through the window of that diner that you start in after grabbing the radio? Fucking heart attack.

I'M A GROWN MAN DAMNIT, THIS SHIT ISN'T SUPPOSED TO SCARE ME is what I feel I should be saying when I play these games, but God if I'm not the biggest pussy in the world when I play them. It's still fun though but fuck I hate being scared, or startled really. Shitty sound effects of a goddamn zombie dog bursting through a window is scary as hell. Can't play without sound though because then some zombie fuck will sneak up on me.

Oh, and fuck Clock Tower and Fatal Frame. I will never play those, ever. Until I find an ISO.

Surprised that no one here mentioned Forbidden Siren. I tried playing it and I had to stop after 15 minutes it was just frightening.

Also, playing SH2 at 2 AM is not a fun thing to do, especially when you're the only one awake and you have to shut off all the lights before going to bed.

It's strange, people say Doom3 is scary etc but I find it more of an action game yet I can't stand F.E.A.R The first game that really scared or more like grossed me out was Phantasmagoria(sp?) when I saw a glimpse of it while my brother was playing (I think I was ~13y old). I saw the scene where one of the people gets their head thrown in a glass cup and it lands right around his eye. You get to see that shot in all its gory details at least if I remember it right, that was ~12y ago damn I feel old now.

Grindhouse? I think on the Genesis scared the shit outta me, so did the Alien games. Silent Hill is of course a no brainer in the scary games catagory, the best when it comes to slow building pyschological terror where RE was more in your face scare you shitless for 10 seconds scary.

System Shock II and Eternal Darkness. Bricks were shat, mainly from playing Eternal Darkness alone with surround sound in a darkened attic.

    Re: Scary Video Games!

Yea that village was a scary fucking atmosphere. The monk dudes were never that scary to me since they were not very difficult to eliminate. The regenerators/iron maidens though, different story altogether.

And whenever you would hear that chainsaw revving, that shit got your heart beating as well.

lol, Being around your age Archi, I remember Shadowgate quite vividly. I must admit though, my parents wouldn't let me have it at the time but my cousin had it and you hit it right on the head. I totally forgot about that one, good catch.

System Shock 2 and F.E.A.R. always wigged me out a bit. I remember when I first started playing SS2 back in 2000 I had real issues playing the early parts of the game at night without any music or TV on in the background. The first hour or two was definitely the scariest to me, but man I can still remember when you finally make it to the engineering core or wherever and discover that Dr. Polito is actually dead and SHODAN's just using her image to trick you - I crept through that infested hallway to her office and then my jaw just dropped when I found her dead in the chair. Such an awesome game moment.

    Clive Barker's "Undying"

Really nice horror FPS. Had a lot of guidance from Clive Barker. You know, the same guy who is responsible for Hell Raiser? Lots of scary moments in that one.

Fatal Frame also gets my vote. Wtf kinda craziness is a camera for a weapon???

Fatal Frame 1 freaked me out a lot. It had a lot of subtle things going on in it and I was seriously constantly paranoid while playing it. It was also listed above, but the first Resident Evil also scared me at the part where the dog jumped through the window in that hall way.
