however, in an actual fight against one of the two, the shark is the obvious pick.
At least if you get lucky you can shove a finger into the sharks eyeball, punch it in the nostril/gils and turn it away.
What are you gonna do with a limb the size of a 4"x8" timber and THAT attached too it swinging at you?
Duck. I'm more confident of my ability to maneuver on land than in water, so bear.
Well, assuming that if caught I am going to die, i would rather be caught by a bear. That bear is going to most likely bludgeon me and knock me out or go for my neck and suffocate me or something. In other words, my death would come with me being unconscious.
However, if the shark is going to kill me the traditional way sharks do, I am going to start of with a few bites, start to bleed out, and continue to be eaten alive as my blood drives the shark more and more into a frenzy. I would be praying to go into complete shock or have a heart attack during a shark attack, otherwise im bleeding out/getting eating while relatively conscious which would suck.
Actually, the shark isn't going to bite you repeatedly, it's going to bite you once, maybe shake you, then leave you floating there missing a chunk of flesh and bleeding to death.
The bear is going to kick your ass, chew on you some, maybe rip your scalp off, then leave you bleeding to death.
Neither is going to actually kill and eat you, we aren't food items in either of their environments.
If you run fast enough the bear might not catch you, in the water the shark will most likely catch you regardless to how fast you run. in the event I get caught I'd rather have to deal with a shark which can at least be survived. I think getting caught by a bear is death plain and simple.
If the premise is that for the 100 yards the animal will chase you and try to attack you, all the comments about 'shark won't enter x feet of water' won't be that important. If thats the case...
I'm a good swimmer but i would still pick bear. You can't outswim a shark but you could potentially outrun the bear. It would probably be a lot easier to distract the bear than the shark, and also make yourself more of a potential threat to scare the animal off, with noise and a fuss (although I assumed that wouldn't happen in this scenario), as the shark will just see you as a deliciously desperate target. If the animal caught up with you, the shark would be much easier to fight off, as with the bear you will be mauled and have virtually zero chance to win.
Despite the strength of the bear, i would still pick bear.
How about bear vs. shark vs. zombie? haha
edit: lol elcura said almost same thing :rocl:
i agree with the shark part, however as a result of the bear kicking my ass I do not think I will be conscious for the greater part of it and thus will not experience as much pain.Originally Posted by Max™
Bears can be bluffed, you gotta punch the shark to get rid of it.
I still don't see why people are assuming these are fatal attacks.
Bears and Sharks attack people who then stumble off and live to tell about it quite a lot actually.
Look at the statistics between Bear and Shark attacks and fatalities.
Then try to find where someone was actually eaten by a Bear or Shark.
Give me some rocks, or a shoe to throw, or a good large stick, and I'd prefer the bear, give me a spear or a knife and the shark would be less scary.
Bears tend to smack people around, chew on them a little, grab a piece of clothing or whatnot and run off with it.
If I had a candy bar or a backpack, I'd throw it to the bear.
I pick the cabin, I always get all rashy in the pants when I'm at the beach.
Both animals can be bluffed. Running is like the worst thing you can do when you see a bear unless you're wrapped in a belt of hotdogs or something in this "survival situation."
almost correct. sharks almost never kill, even the sharks that are considered lethal rarely actually kill people.Originally Posted by Max™
bears on the other hand... when someone survives a bear attack, that shit makes national news.
anyone remember the story about the guy who defended his daughter?
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/stor ... d=14348280
(pretty sure this is the guy i remember reading about)
ripped open his skull
ripped open his chest
broken limbs
fractured eye sockets
broken back in 28 places
etc...

Shark Statistics
http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/sharks/st ... statsw.htm
1990-2006 we are talking about about 10% fatality rate with shark attacks, species aren't specified (very important caveat)
Bear Statistics
http://www.absc.usgs.gov/research/brown ... flicts.htm
Alaska only 1900-2002 (I'm thinking pre-1960s aren't going to be too reliable)
Aprox 20% fatality among bear attacks in alaska, if we take out females guarding young (which typically seem to get their young out of danger as first priority), its gets higher, and if we just look at grizzlies, its really high (almost 1/3 are fatal attacks).
Can't exactly directly compare these stats, but i think its safe to say its more dangerous than a little 'smacking around' by the bear
According to Zeno of Elea, neither the bear nor the shark can catch me.
