Re: Shark vs Bear survival discussion thread

I'd guess I could do 100 yards in 15 seconds, and I'd bank that it'd take a bear a tad longer than that to do 200 yards. 3 feet of water sucks terribly; that's at your waist or higher meaning all of your running power is submerged. tbh I'd think you might swim faster than you could run with your legs submerged if you're half decent (which is another reason I'd go with the bear; my swimming and general aquatic coordination aren't that great), and the odds of this go up the shorter you are.

With the bear you also have a vision advantage, compared to the shark scenario. You can pretty clearly see the bear; it's not gonna sneak up on you. This lets you do the whole puff-yourself-up raised arms thing and slowly work your way backwards to the cabin if it gets close to you and looks threatening.

I'd definitely take on the shark. First of all, who can really ever say you'd be safe in the cabin? A shark can't sprout legs and chase you on the shore.
Maybe this shark will evolve legs super fast and sprint faster than a bear at you.
If sharks ever grow legs, we're all fucked.

Oh my god! They've grown legs and they're walking up on the beach!

They're eating that poor man... no... wait... they're falling down, gasping...

Oh, sweet, sharks can't breathe air.

if they evolved and grew legs, dont you think they'd evolve to breathe air, its not really that far of a stretch after the first part ;p

    Legs are modified flippers/fins.

    Lungs are modified swim bladders.

Sharks do not have swim bladders.

    What do I win?

also, according to evolution, fish first developed the ability to breathe air through their skin before their fins evolved into legs.

I thought I heard somewhere that sharks would also die out of water for any decent amount of time because of their mass... Without the buoyancy of water, their own weight would slowly crush them, or something...? I have no clue where I remember hearing this.. and I may be thinking whales... but, wtf, it sounds good for sharks, too.

Sounds possible for whales, but I doubt it would happen to sharks. Elephants seem to do OK on land...

Sharks don't have bones though, just cartilage. At least I think thats correct. I doubt that goes for whales, no way would cartilage be able to support all of that weight.

When sharks decide to move on to land they wont evolve like how other animals have evolved, if a shark wants to evolve chainsaw limbs then they will damn well do so. Laser eyes are just the beginning for them.

I always got the impression that sharks were less aggressive (as long as you're not bleeding). I read about this through some link when that Tiger mauled some idiot kid that was taunting it.

August 7, 2002: A catwalk over a shark tank collapses at New Orleans' Aquarium of the Americas, throwing 10 visitors into the water. The 10, including four children, thrash around in terror for up to 15 minutes with the sharks swimming beneath their kicking feet before being pulled out. No one is seriously hurt.
Now that would be really scary.. But the point is noone was eaten.

But streetsharks.. With rollerblades. You criminals wouldn't stand a chance.

Their jaws are cartilage, it's just reinforced. Same goes for their spine, I think.

I'd befriend the bear, then ride it into 3ft of water and fight the shark. Everyone loves cuddly bears, no-one likes slimy sharks.

I would never take the bear.... Stephen Colbert has warned me of the dangers of bears.

"Bears are soulless, godless, rampaging killing machines."
"I believe all God's creatures have a soul — except bears."

Bears should be pretty awesome at football, then... much better than sharks.
