    Looking for a decent RPG

Hi^^ I'm sure this question is asked a lot, but i felt uncomfortable hijacking someone's thread from a year ago lol. I'm looking for a RPG game i haven't tried yet. I tend not to replay games too often, since i play it mostly for the story (yes I'm an rpg nut). It loses its surprise the second time around.

    Systems:
    PC, Mac, Xbox, Xbox360, Nin64
    Preferance: PS1, PS2, PS3

    Pluses:
    ATB
Character talks (unlike the silent Crono or Serge)
    Good Music
    Good Story
Save Points often- I have a hard time sitting still for long periods of time XD I generally play no longer than an hour.

    Deal Breakers:
    Non-Turn Based, FFXII was the exception. Generally speaking... if i have to aim at it, i suck at it ;_;

    Loved:
    FFIV
    FFVII
    FFIX
    Lunar 2
    Star Ocean 2
    Chrono Trigger
    Chrono Cross
    Legend of the Dragoon
    Dragon Quest 8
    I'm probably forgetting some...

    Tried:
    FFVIII
    FFX
    FFX-2
    Dark Cloud
    .hack/something
    Kingdom Hearts
    Magna Carta
    Xenosaga
    Grandia Xtreme
Star Ocean: Till the end of time
    Suikoden III
    FFVII: DoC

Been looking at maybe Persona 3? I had someone recommend that. Any input is appreciated^^ and thank you for making camping Fafnir bearable!

Re: Looking for a decent RPG

Try Disgaea if you like SRPGs. Both 1 and 2 are amazing games that could last anywhere from 80 hours to 500.

Try Suikoden 1, 2 and 5. All are much better than 3. I mean, miles better. Like different games.

Definitely get Persona 3, try Odin Sphere (more of an action game, but it has an amazing story).

Atelier Iris are nice RPGs (despite ratings they are pretty good).

Valkyrie Profile games are amazing as well.

Try Star Ocean 3 and uhh Wild Arms series.

edit: oops, you've played SO3, in that case instead try Digital Devil Saga or Shin Megami Tensai: Nocturne. Aaaaaanddd the Shadow Hearts series.

Re: Looking for a decent RPG

    Dragon Quest 7
-If you liked DQ8, this is a good choice

    Lunar 1(Silver Star)
-I kinda like Silver Star more than Eternal Blue <.<

    Lufia 2
-I couldn't get into 1, but Lufia 2 was awesome

Grandia 2 (much much much much better than xtreme)
-It's kinda old-ish, but it's a good and strong game

    Suikoden 2 + 1 + 5
-As listed above, miles better than 3, you gotta have played the rest of the series and be into the actual world of Suikoden to be able to appreciate the story that 3 adds to the series.

Tales of Phantasia/Destiny/Eternia/Abyss (Symphonia Gamecube orz)
-Not ATB, but since you loved SO2, the Tales series is very similar to SO (the first Tales game, Phantasia, was created by Wolf Team, which broke up and part of them created tri-Ace, who created SO :D)
PSX version of Phantasia was recently translated, check another topic here.

    Eternal Sonata
-I haven't played this yet so I can't comment, but I really want to play it

    Fire Emblem (7)
-Do you like SRPGs? Even if you think you don't, this is a GBA game, I highly suggest you just try it out (The US name is just "Fire Emblem", this was the first one to come to the US) If you like FFT, I HIGHLY suggest trying this out.

If I can think of more later I'll post =x

Id suggest all the 'Tales' games or Valkryie Profile 1 or 2.

Both good series, Fire Emblem is an aquired taste for some.

Re: Looking for a decent RPG

    Uh, lets see...

You listed Xenosaga but i'm not sure if that includes the entire series, or just Episode 1. If it's just Episode 1, I definitely recommend picking up Episode3, it's amazing.

Suikoden V is pretty good..but the main character's too much of a pansy for my tastes. I always felt like everyone was holding his hand, but I guess that's because he was a prince. Good game though, once I got past that.

Xenogears..I don't even think anything needs to be said. You don't have it listed, get it. You can probably find a decent priced one on amazon, maybe..used?

Eternal Sonata is quite enjoyable, i'm currently replaying it to keep distracted till Lost Odyssey comes out. Beautiful art and music.

I haven't seen this one mentioned around here often, but I really enjoyed Ar Tonelico for ps2. Watch some trailers on youtube and such of these games and see how they appeal to you. Xenogears has really outdated graphics, but the story is great. Also maybe check out Vagrant Story, I liked that game too!

Star Wars: Knights of the old Republic

You seem to be limiting yourself with only JP RPGs. We should rectify that with one of the best RPGs evar.

It's my gut feeling that Eternal Sonata is better than Lost Odyssey.

I really, really hope not. I'm dying for a more 'realistic' (art-style wise) RPG

One of my favorite games I haven't seen on here is Jagged Alliance 2. Its a real time RPG/Strategy game. Everyone I know that has played it loved it and you can pick it up for less then $20.

Re: Looking for a decent RPG

Breath of Fire III (I enjoyed V too, but it seems to be a love-it-or-hate-it thing for most people), and seconding the Xenogears and Persona 3 suggestions for being made of win. Grandia III has pretty fun gameplay if you ignore the lawl-worthy storyline. If you use emulators at all, there's a pretty good amount of not-jaw-droppingly-amazing-but-still-fun games on the GBA like Fire Emblem, Onimusha Tactics, Tactics Ogre and the Golden Sun games.

    If you don't like wrestling with the controls much on non-turn based games, you might want to skip Odin Sphere. It might be just me, but I'm like 20 hours into the game and the battle system still has moments where it pisses me off <_<;

I don't think it will suck, but it's looking like it's gonna be mediocre to me.

And that will kill Mistwalker, especially after the massive fail that was Blue Dragon.

I guess this is more of an accurate statement.

Really? I thought after you got used to a character they were easy to control. Hardest character to learn is Mercedes, Oswald/Violet following. Once you get used to their playstyle it's really easy. Gwendolyn and Cornelius being the easiest to control. Then again, it's not for everyone, but if you can get through the game the story is really worth it. The last book had me in awe.

    3rding Xenogears and 2nding Dragon Warrior 7.

I'd also suggest Final Fantasy 6 and 8. 6 is one of the best in the series, and I'd personally rate it one of the top 10 games ever. 8 plays similar to 7, despite what haters will tell you, and is better than 7 in graphics and music.

I know you said you prefer turn-based, but consider giving Radiata Stories a try. Combat is fairly easy, and it has gorgeous graphics, entertaining characters and dialogue, and a surprisingly serious story considering how lighthearted the visuals are.

    You poor, poor soul.

I'd recommend Suikoden as well, however most of the games have silent protagonists. If you do decide to try another, just make sure it isn't 4 and I can't really recommend Tactics either. I'll second Disgaea and Grandia as well, Nippon Ichi makes awesome SRPG's and both Grandia 1 and 2 had pretty decent stories (although I never finished the first, I really liked what I played).

Don't see Shadow Hearts mentioned yet, so I'll throw that one out too. I'm only familiar with the second, but I've heard good things about the first and third games as well. SH2 has a turn-based battle system that actually takes a bit of skill and timing to master, a cool hero, and...wacky characters. One of them finds random objects, like a fish or mailbox as his weapon <_<

Yeah Suikoden has a silent protagonist (except for the 3rd one... i don't remember about the 4th <.<)

It really isn't a problem in itself for the first two games, because the story is really good and absorbs you, you hardly notice it. 5 on the other hand, since it has voice acting, feels really awkward at times because it looks like the main character is trying to speak...but he can't.
