Well, technically the heroes in Suikoden do speak, because you choose options that are worded like speech. Also in S2 when Jowy and Hero get their runes there's a flashback with what looks like the Hero talking through the choices you made.

I know it's not exactly right but it did help give the feeling that the Hero had input and wasn't just silent throughout. I got that impression with 1, 2 and 5 at least. Although it does feel weird with the VA in 5.

Shadow Heart 2 (and 1) is the only rpg I can think off that isnt in your list. You should seriously finish Xenosaga if want you are looking for is story. Xenogears was great too, but I seriously don't know many people who played the game late and liked it

Shadow Hearts 1 and 2 are incredible. If you do you play them... you do yourself a disservice by not playing Shadow Hearts 1 first. Shadow Hearts 3 is fucking terrible.

Really? I thought after you got used to a character they were easy to control. Hardest character to learn is Mercedes, Oswald/Violet following. Once you get used to their playstyle it's really easy. Gwendolyn and Cornelius being the easiest to control. Then again, it's not for everyone, but if you can get through the game the story is really worth it. The last book had me in awe.
Well, it's not really one thing, but more like several little annoying things that just add up into one big pain in the ass. The gameplay at least gives the impression that they were going for action game controls, but it feels so much like they missed the target.

There's a huge delay between almost everything you do so you end up thinking faster than your character can react (like when you see a mob's attack coming from a mile away, but since you're in the middle of doing something else, you can mash X all day and the character won't jump out of the way; even using an instant-use item locks you up for a couple seconds) and sometimes they seem to ignore commands entirely; the inability to do most things in the air (for most characters this isn't a huge problem, but I was kinda disappointed when I found out not even Mercedes could cast magic in the air, even though she can fly); no real blocking (you still take damage from the "blocks", sometimes get knocked back no matter what and even then only some characters can block); absolutely no dash or dodge ability whatsoever (Mercedes kind of screams Air Dash).

    So it kinda feels like it's trying to control like an action game, but since it doesn't really have most things you need to make an action game work, it ends up working like a turn-based RPG: almost everything you fight, you end up beating by just trampling over it with pure stats rather than having any kind of skill playing the character. I mean don't get me wrong, I wouldn't have played it for 20+ hours if I completely hated it and I can see what people like about it (like you said, it's a nice story and obviously the art is great), but I can't really remember the last time I played a game that made me want to throw my controller at the TV screen so many times per play session <_<;

But anyway, enough of my my bitching, back on topic I wanna second whoever mentioned Radiata Stories. I can't believe I forgot about that game.

lol, I had no idea it could be so frustrating for some people. I thought it was pretty easy once you get used to how a character works. To each his own though =P Still, if you haven't finished Armageddon I urge you to do so, that is seriously one of the best told stories ever.

Everyone who played the game back then liked it, but I know many people who played it recently for the first time and stopped for many reasons. Xenosaga's 3d cutscene and good translation make it easier for some people to get into the story when you are used to ps2 rpg.

I just got pissed off at Cornelius last stage as I didn't feel like farming shit to defeat the slimes. Was there another effective way to kill them? That one stage ruined the game alone for me.

You mentioned you don't want non-turn based games, but if you have a N64(Which you say you do) I'd highly, highly recommend Ogre Battle 64. It's an incredible game, I'd say a jaw-dropper.. Very addicting. It's an SRPG.. But the battle system is really unique, but not turn based.

I wouldn't exactly call Ogre Battle/Ogre Battle 64 turn based. It's system is not really comparable to any other game (I guess you could compare it to Soul Nomad as stretch in terms of once you have engaged an enemy unit). It's much closer to an RTS then a typical Turn Based RPG.

While we are on the topic of the Ogre series though you should really check out Tactics Ogre. It's basically the predecessor to FFT and is actually better in some ways.

Albeit twice as hard (Then again Tactics was horrible easy)

It's also one of the rarest PS1 games... was released in Japan on SNES though! I bought a copy of the game when it came out.. could easily turn it around on Ebay now for 100+.

Not really, there are various easy ways to make Napalm, but I just did a run through the forest collecting bottles and stuff to make like 6-7 Napalms (or you could just buy them, easy enough) and whenever I saw a bunch of slimes I just nuked their asses. I think they also drop items that you could kill them with if you use Down+Attack. Cornelius is the only person you have this problem with though, everyone else who faces slimes can just attack normally.

But I do think Cornelius' last stage is a step up in difficulty. I found it great fun.

Difficulty? more like bullshit. The stage wasn't hard at all. It was just a forced go fucking farm to continue.

Wizards are pesky, they make the stage harder than any others. Well, you are forced to farm, but it's not really that different from any other game is it? Some RPGs force you to go on pointless quests or level up to continue this isn't any different. Although I enjoyed the actual game more than I give it credit, cause I actually went through everyone's story again to farm items/food for Armageddon.

Bullshit is Mercedes vs Oswald when you don't know what to do, after you find out it's very satisfying lol

It took me a while to figure out (I love how so many games these days expect you to read the developers' minds - could have at least given us a "Scan" skill or something), but you can use the Turneys that spawn on that map to make Killer Clouds (or Killer Poison or whatever its called) using one specific recipe, which will one shot all the slimes it hits (and some other enemies also). There's enough materials and Turneys around to kill those every time you need to, as long as you remember to keep remaking them after you use them, so you don't have to farm on other maps. The bad part, of course, is if you walk into the cloud, which lasts a pretty damn long time and is too tall to double jump over, you also get one shotted (I wonder which genious thought that would be a good idea).

Those wizards are so god damn annoying too. Almost every map I get with them I ended up taking twice as long as I should to finish just because they keep teleporting away every time I hit them :s (I know you're supposed to hit their swords back at them, but when there's a ton of mobs on screen, including like four of these fuckers, it's kinda hard to do properly without hitting something else). I ended up just leveling my psypher a bit more(farming a bunch of Xtra Phozons), putting on the ATK+30% thing and casting overload on myself every time I found a map with them to kill them in as few hits as I could.

After Conerlious' last wonder of a stage (and after finding out I could kill things easily with Mercedes as long as I didn't get close to them) I spent a while farming phozons on the first dungeon you go to (the forest one I think?), just reapeatedly getting S rank on the whole dungeon, then going back home before the dungeon boss. By the time I got to Oswald I killed him in 3 hits, he didn't even have time to transform <_<; (Homing Shot > Piercing Shot > Homing Shot)
