They had something close to that. They called it Ballista Royale. It was glorious. And then it was over, and never came back

a game like wow, u don't wanna bother getting the best gear cuz a few months later, bliz will fuck you over hardcore, I still laugh at my RL friend for getting grand marshall, spent 16+ hrs a day for months grinding honour just to get buttfucked by expansion
all his gears and such, looks cool and all but all garbage and bunch of noobs can get them anytime they want now
Blizzard is on-record as not wanting players to grow complacent, get one set of gear and be awesome forever. You want to be on the top-tier, you have to keep working to stay there. 'Noobs' might get themselves a set of Grand Marshall's items but they'll definitely never get Vengeful Gladiator's goodies. Clearly the game for people who want only one set of gear to keep forever is FFXI.

    Re: FFXI Thinning Out?

Well Balista gear only option is a big possibility "Balista: stat, ability, spell ect." option could very well make pvp work in the overall picture for FFXI. A redo of the entire Balista would be something I'd be more than happy to see and be excited for, cause I enjoyed Balista a lot.

But I believe the current state of things, SE are doing the right thing to FFXI it's just the only problem is that FFXI is still a 5 year old game and there's been a lot of improvements since then in the world of MMOs and it's just isn't an option to SE to redo the entire FFXI world to cater to what has evolved since then.

which I suppose is a big reason why certain specs or classes have issues on one side or the other.
Que Paladin Forums lawl Retribution sucks! Healing Pallies are gimp! Pallies can't be tanks with defensive spec! all the while getting Gimp Pallies!

@the gear argument, in a way I like SE's way of managing gear, it gives a lot of alternatives but at the same time I know that there should be progression.

    Re: FFXI Thinning Out?

SE should rethink that because hell, the last MMO they tried to launch 'Fantasy Earth: Zero' kerploded and even with 5years under its belt 'XI is one of the better 'looking' MMOs. The next SE MMO isnt going to be FF, so its gonna turn off alotta people. Unless they blow me off my seat with amazingness~

They could easily milk another 5years outta the game if they stopped half-assing how they do things and appeal to the playerbase for ideas. Who would know the game better? The devs dont play as actively as the endgamers/veterans and hell, its cheaper labor than brainstorming sessions that go nowhere

Ballista Royale was amazing, they should have ran with that. Maybe the JP didnt like Ballista as much overall as the NA/EU population?

@the gear argument, in a way I like SE's way of managing gear, it gives a lot of alternatives but at the same time I know that there should be progression.
I think there is way too much useless gear as is, they should obsolete some things for the sake of making a better overall game. Being capped @ Zilart is cramping the games potential.

vengeful is hard to get? lol...
you can cheat the pvp system so easily even with that personal rating cap
but like any MMO, of course there is the flaws

i mean, if u're going to raid/pvp, u better do it from the start of the patch day
because if u don't, u're wasting your time cuz you know the next patch will come soon
most of my friends in wow quit the game already, will come back when expansion comes out probably
i see some ppl starting raid guilds in kara now and what a big waste of time imo, better off AFKing leeching in AV for a full day, u'll get better gear that requires less effort and time than raiding takes
raiding feels like dynamis now, instant sleep spell, except it lasts much longer

But at the same time, it's kinda too late to introduce ground breaking gear that obsoletes Zilart cause in essence obsoletes all gear up and including what's out now. If it was made obsolete come CoP then I can agree but as it stands it's late in the game to do something as drastic as that currently. I'd one for seeing whole new content that offers amazing gear but at the same time that'll obsolete what we've created up to now.

Right now, I kinda feel FFXI is just right content wise, however the fact is there's a lot that can be improved atm, and these tweaks imo should be made and really would just make FFXI that much better rather than having the dev team continue to work on new content while some of them only work on tweaking the overall game. I think anyone can agree that FFXI is a rather large world atm but at the same time there's a lot of annoyances that can be improved upon without losing it's integrity.

    Re: FFXI Thinning Out?

My main gripe is that while they proved they can outdo Zilart gear without actually outdoing it (Nyzul Sets, Salvage Sets) they continue to persist in screwing up the system of HNMs why? ToAU produced some of the most dissapointing HNM results since Jormy back in CoP and theres no way they can tell me its difficult to create some inspiring sets with desirable stats.

Hydras a crying shame, Khimairas a joke, Cerberus is mildly entertaining... its just all sad. Then you have 3 HNMs will no purpose outside bragging rights.

It may be late in the game, but for god sake i know they can do better than rehash BST JSE or rehash SAM/DRG JSE.

Sandworm? No drops? Whats the point of releasing WotG with it then.

Actually, I thought it was rather interesting. People complained about having to camp the ground HNMs all the time... so they made HNMs that you really didn't need to camp because they didn't drop any fantastic items. Some some general kinda useful items.

So, do you want an HNM that has a chance to drop a ridill-like item? Or an HNM that drops it's average stuff all the time like Cerberus?

    Re: FFXI Thinning Out?

I think gear is what end game comes down to next to difficulty and challenge.

And this is due to the amount of people you need to do these things. Alot of people don't care for gear and do stuff just for the challenge but I would imagine the majority of end-game is driven by item-goals.

Would be nice to have some other perks to killing HNMs. im sure SE can get creative w/ that.

but really, it seems like they just don't learn at all from their mistakes.

    Re: FFXI Thinning Out?

We will never see PvP or PvE for FFXI. The classes are so out of balance its not even funny. Thats always been WoW's big problem. One class is always overpowered and gets tweaked every 2 weeks. Then you have to look at it in lvls. Locks are crazy strong at 39 but weak at 49. So they tweak locks and now there weak at 39 and even worse at 49. But are impressively strong at 59. But all the locks cry about 30-58. An then the rest of the commun cry about 60-70. Not to sure about the jobs they cry about now. I haven't played WoW in a few months. But when I was it was Locks and Hunters.

Allot of the added features some have suggested wont work unless S.E dropped the PS2. An that wont happen because over 1/2 the population in FFXI is playing off of the Ps2. FFXI graphics and storage are already limited by it. So undoubtedly allot of other features are as well. So no capes, no belts, no weapons drawn.

S.E tried to fix the HNM problem but they really failed at it. Some of the items they made into KSNM 99 battles and lower. But only made the drop like 5%. So its just as pointless as trying to fight the botters. They really needed to improve HNM. Make them pop only. Add more of them in different areas. Make the more desirable gear drop off of other harder HNM. They needed to implement newer gear that matched or was slighter better the Zilart gear.

I soloed Bst to 75 and I basically did 99% of my Hunter solo to 70. An otu of both of them I felt more accomplished doing it with Bst then I did with my Hunter. There was just more an Epic feel doing it in FFXI then there ever was in WoW.

As for me my WoW ship has passed. I am done with pointless raids. Taking and invading an enemy stronghold only to lose it an hour later. Running around in the world only to have a Mage challenge you and then have a Rogue Backstab me was getting old. An the countless Bg's with 0 strat and people not following orders. An then near the end to deal with zerging. followed by 20 minutes of whining.

Running instances is just as painful as running Dyn or any event in FFXI. Members not logged on or where they need to be. You don;t have the right job or proc. What you need doesn't drop. But what drops nobody needs.

I wonder how long it will take for people to admit that the latest expansion is pretty mediocre and needs some patchwork before people start quitting.

It will eventually shape up and by now SE's customers are used to the wait. The real question is if people will continue to be patient when their gaming dollars are further drained away with the next generation of games coming down the pipeline. "Why pay retail + 8 months of subscription on promised content when that same money buys you games X, Y and Z?" etc. etc.

Ok, lets break down the drops:

    ~Hydra~

Berserker's Torque. - Poisons you in exchange for regain @ 1tp/tic, the poison is like what? 20hp/tic? Absolutely rediculous. Who were they thinking would use this for anything outside waking up when slept?

Hydra Scale - Hydra Scale Mail, carbon copies of Gavial Set give or take a few stats. Garbage. So situational that if you want, just buy the Gavial and to hell with the Hydra.

Hydra Fang - Snakeeye, STR+5 and that sounds awesome.... until it poisons you so bad and cannot be macroed off on... so what the hell is it good for? absolutely nothing. (much pun intended)

Sirius Axe - BST only, nothing special at all besides a company sword-ish effect that seems more like something you'd get on the AH rather than a 3headed serpent.

Orochi Nodowa - Att+6, Resist Poison - Decent.... just BARELY decent on the neck slot.

Hydras a fun fight, one of the few meleeburns where criticals are key and Hydra looks the part of 'fierce HNM' but his drops go down as the worst thought out ideas -ever-. Its such a shame that anyone could come up with a better idea for a loot table, what the hell happened? All the items poison the player, why couldnt the player POISON the mobs 100% of the time?

    Idea: Orochi - 1H Katana 100% proc poison 190 delay 36dmg.

    ~Cerberus~

Cerberus Mantle: Nice enmity piece, arguably better than Amemet Mantle for a handful of jobs, nice fire resist. Its like an alternate Amemet Mantle+1 unless you HQ it.

Algol - Better, its a nice looking GS that triple attacks and has added fire damage (why its not 100% is beyond me.) and is desirable.

Cerberus Claws - Cerberus Bow is meh, Cerb Bow+1 is rare beyond belief. Hades Sainti is the best idea for h2h in a long time, makes for a nice enmity piece for MNK and DD weapon for PUP.

Cerberus is a good HNM, not outstanding but better than Hydra. His drops arent outsanding but they are decent. His fight goes straightforward and besides Gates of Hades he can be held forever...

    ~Khimaira~

Seveneyes - Arguably a nice looking piece and the Conserve MP doesnt trump ele staves but might be good for a devotioning WHM or club offhanding/healing BLU.

Hauteclaire - Looks nice, rare as hell drop, definately something a PLD might want.

Khimaira Parts - Complete garbage. Everything but the tail makes rehash pieces and the tail makes the potion for the adder jambiya that needs a jewel found in only one place in the game.... what were they thinking?

Khimaira is located in the only place in the entire Caedarva Mire-Hediva Isle without imp/soulflayer adds, pathetic. For a monster on a 72hr repop, he could pose a challenge? nope.

What id like is some HNM drops that are unique, not rehash drops or items so rare that its not even worth it. The potential for the HNMs were so high.... until they botched the lootpools. (Cerberus is the most balanced of the 3)

Nothing needs to be so 'awesome ridillish' but they can at least be something original....

They should just stop making HNMs. Instanced material is superior is almost every way. HNMs creates so much anger and drama in this game that I can't help but think that they should have never been added. If they can't make current HNMs instanced, then just stop making new ones in favor Salvage-like content. Is anyone going to argue that camping is good game design?

    Re: FFXI Thinning Out?

My question was sort of rhetorical. Personally, I think the drops should be more like Hydra, Khim, and Cerberus. Stuff that's pretty decent, but not so incredible that you'll spend 3 hours staring at darters with 100+ other people. All the really good stuff, should be in Dynamis-like zones. Or popped HNMs like Sky and Sea. HNMs should be for fun, and some decent sidegrades.

Yeah you missed my point evidently which is WoW pvp isnt 1v1. I thought I made it clear. WoW pvp is 10v10 in warsong gulch, 15v15 in arathi basin and eye of the storm, and 40v40 in alterac valley. Then for arenas you can have a 2v2 3v3 and 5v5 team, when you do arena you start in a little room where you can buff up each other for no mana/energy cost, and have no idea what the other team is made of. I hear alot of shit about how certain combos own certain caps, but then when i did arenas myself, i have yet to see any of these power combos outside of 2 frost mages in 2v2 (that sucks kind of). I think pvp outside arena could be refreshed a bit, I've bitched a bit about it the same as I bitch about ffxi content, only thing is WoW pvp still keeps me groveling for mor epvp epics while shitty content in ffxi I just stop doing (outside of camps b/c ironically if I log on and there is a camp I find it hard to say no when I have been rewarded by those same camps). But I feel quite irritated that the singular pixels in ffxi have such power over my life, where as in WoW I cant take it too seriously, since I always remember its just a game and I'm there to have fun. And in ffxi I feel like I'm clocking in at a job where I dont get paid. No offense but I think if you still enjoy same events after 3-5 years, I think you are deranged, obsessed, and should seek some kind of mental help.

People give BRP shit but hes usually not too far off the mark and with this post hes dead on, ffxi could side grade its heart out til the end of time, as long as they do something to make sure that its skill and teamwork getting people their rewards, and not hours upon hours of waiting for lucky claims, or botting. My worst piece of ares is more valuable to me than my adaberk.

Add: To the people who keep saying ffxi has added other options for gear, I'm sorry but I just cant make sense of that shit. The bottom line comes down to BG forums was always a forum for players who want to max their characters out and be the best they can be. It was never a casual player forum for people who just want to hang out cybering mithras. I've noticed in the past few weeks BG members hardly even post out here in public section anymore. That tells me alot that the ls who this forum belongs to that is still a hardcore ffxi endgame ls that does all aspects of the game lately hasnt felt like talking to the people who post here, and I think it is 2 things. 1. There isnt shit in ffxi worth talking about for hardcore players anymore, and 2. All the new regular posters have been playing ffxi less than a year and still looking at it through rose colered glasses. People in BG can atleast be honest and say the game sucks in the areas it sucks in rather than being gay fan boys and acting like SE can do no wrong. Until SE adds something that is a real challenge that is worth doing based on skill and with worthwhile rewards, and not insane personnel management skills to get 30 people online for 9 straight events so they can turn around and one shot supposed new challenging content for 2 new abjs, a w body, and a e legs, I dont think we will see anything on here besides people bitching about how the new expansion sucks.
