I want to adopt a cat in NYC..

...however, there are SO many shelters/foster homes to look at and I'm getting overwhelmed. There's so many to look at and I'm not sure where I should go browsing. I wanted to go last Saturday and look but I couldn't decide which one I wanted to go to. I found this place http://www.barcshelter.org/home/index.html . It's pretty close to a stop on the L train so it's easy to get to and it looks presentable. My question is, has anyone been to any animal shelters in the NYC area and could tell me where I should go to look? I'm looking for animal shelters, not pet stores.

My other kitty needs a friend <3

Can't tell you diddly about NYC area, but I can tell you if its possible to find a privately owned or smaller shelter type organization, that is a plus. My dad recently adopted a 4 week old from a recent litter that was given to this non-profit agency. Very small I think and was kind of out of the city (Live in Arizona, was up north). He contacted her week or so before hand and they even had an interview process. They questionered him to make sure he had the right living conditions for a cat and was the right type of person (he is retired, lives in 2 1/2 acres with lots of outside area for him to grow up into). Nonetheless, if that is not something plausible for you, just make sure you find a lovely one that isn't sulking in the back of their pen. That may be signs of health problems. Plus, grey/orange tabbies are the best. Go for one of those! :>

ASPCA is kinda general, they sponsor a shitload of other shelters from what I can see.

When I adopted my current cat in Seattle, I went to 3 shelters before I found a decent one that actually looked like they take care of the animals.

I wish you luck and am glad to hear your looking in shelters instead of pet stores. Saving em from the needle! Pet stores shouldn't be selling pets like cats, dogs, etc.. only fish imo.

That's the main reason I want to go to shelters and find a good one. If no one adopts them, they're gonna be killed and that makes me . At the same time, I'd like to give my adoption fee to a shelter that does good work rather than a shelter that obviously doesn't take care of the animals.

I dislike pet stores because half of them get their animals from puppy farms etc. etc.

Yup, exactly my thoughts. My mom helps out in GA traffic stray cats all around to 'halfway homes' to help them avoid the needle. There is one PetSmart down here that has a bunch of cages they put out on the weekends to try and get cats adopted and it breaks my heard seeing how many of them get taken and knowing that so many get put down each day. I wish you luck and post pics when you get the new cat.

Silly question but have you tried using Petfinder.com? Most shelters put their animals on there.

There is one PetSmart down here that has a bunch of cages they put out on the weekends to try and get cats adopted and it breaks my heard seeing how many of them get taken and knowing that so many get put down each day.

Not that I prefer to think of it, but is there some gigantic pile or bin full of dead puppies and kittens after they're put down?

I'd hate to be the guy whose job it is to take that to the... wherever they take it.

If you don't mind taking the LIRR to Port Washington (or having someone drive you), you should visit the North Shore Animal League. They have a ton of stray kittens/cats/puppies/dogs. The adoption fee varies between $50 to $100 for cats and kittens. When I adopted my cat 14 years ago, she was 8 weeks old and already litter trained, too. They provided the meds and vetcare for free (or at least cheaper) because they already knew she had a heart condition. My uncle also adopted a dog from them 13 years ago, and she was also somewhat trained.

There's also Animal Haven in Flushing, Queens and SoHo, as well Save-A-Pet.

The Vet I bring my animals too will take in animals that have been abandoned and need a home. I usually just get w/e I need from her if she has anything available.
