Re: Soul Calibur IV meets Star Wars

Soul Calibur can be a very good determinant on who I can live with.

This past summer, when my new third roommate moved in, he had a couple of his hick town friends over. That night, they decided to play SCII on my XBox (I have both the GC and XB versions, prefer the XBox). After watching them dick around for a bit, I decided to get in on it. So the roommate's three friends and I were playing (the roommate opted to stay out and talk shit the entire time). Used the first match to get a gauge on them and lost, when suddenly I hear the roommate talk some serious shit behind me.

After a little bit, the controller came back to me for my turn to go. Start hearing some more talk behind me, so I decided to lay waste to everyone and selected Mitsurugi.

Before the first round starts, my other roommate walks in (it's his nature to not keep his nose out of things). He looks to see who is playing, then sees the characters, then laughs to himself. Fifteen seconds and one perfect later, he finally opens his mouth: "This is why we don't allow Josh to play as Mitsurugi."

The roommate and his friends were pissed and out for blood. For about the next hour or two, I jumped between Raphael, Kilik, Mitsurugi, Maxi, Nightmare and Cervantes and just beat on all of them. If I lost a round, I'd hear shit talk only to come back to silence or groans the following round.

Finally had enough and decided to lose using Yunsung. Never liked playing with him. The other roommate knew I took the fall, but when I lost it was like the roommate and his friends won the world series. Pretty much resolved that he was a piece of trash that night. How much of a piece of trash is another story for another time.

The kicker though was that wankster fucktard never picked up the controller. If I ever looked his way and then looked at the controller, he found some way to chicken out.

Re: Soul Calibur IV meets Star Wars

Possibly the thing that bugged me about SCIII the most was the manner in which you got some of the characters. While the conquest mode thing was all good and okay for a while (in fact, I rather enjoyed making my own characters and leveling them), it got ot a point where breaking the HP bars of buildings down was so tedious and gay that I didn't even want to do it. Besides that, I got stuck at one point and just never finished it.

And then you had to not die at ALL certain times to get certain events to happen in Arcade mode so you could fight Olcadan or w/e and get him as a PC... it was just dumb.

And yes, some of the fighters from SCII were fixed/nerfed in dumb ways, and I didn't even like any of the new chars except Amy who you can only play as in free mode

Soul Calibur III let me down so hard that it'll take some pretty serious work to make me like IV. Especially since some pretty dumb characters made it back into the sequel.

I used to get so fucking insane playing as Talim. At least in 2, crazy-fuck agility and respectable damage from the power hits. Never got around to trying 3, thinking about skipping over for 4. Acceptable y/n?

yeah. 2 was way better than 3. only thing that saved 3 from sucking was the create a player mode. which apparently, 4 has a better version of.

Be glad, Talim sucks in 3. I was so pissed that they fucked her, she was a beast in SCII. I'd say it's fine to skip over, you didn't miss much.

3 was fine if you didn't try to take the game competitively, since the imbalance between characters was so extreme.

Fighting games without some measure of balance == nothx. I'd sooner play Tekken 4 than Soul Calibur III.

For me SC2 and SC3 suck alot. So far my favorite is soul blade and soul calibur 1(soul blade being the best because of edge master mode)

I wish SC games would stop having characters for specific systems. 2 had hiachi(sp)/link/spawn for ps/gc/xbox, 4 is yoda/vader for xbox/ps tho both get the "apprentice" guy from the new star wars game.

Yoda and Vader likely won't be exclusives forever. At last check the online multiplayer will allow cross console play, so data for Yoda and Vader will already be included on each console.

Maybe they'll just use the apprentice as a stand in for that

Has there been any documentation on how the character creator has been improved/updated? I liked the general idea of the Chronicles of the Sword "mini-game", but it was pretty obvious standard move set originals would get their ass kicked by story/soul characters due to available moves.

Amazon sent out emails advertising SCIV for $40 for those interested. PS3 version anyways. Had to call CSR to get that price but they gave in. Just as a heads up.

Cool at the time, but has definitely not aged well.
This was one of the first '3D' fighting games for the PS when it was first released. I remember renting a PS at blockbuster and renting this game along with it. When I finally bought my own PS, I had to get this game because I loved using the old man that farts on people. It was some crazy button combo that initiated it like Akuma's Rage but insanely longer.

Edit: found youtube link lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XICSO0cyqrs time is around 1:50

Regular version. Clicking the link in the email directed you to the $60 price.. that's why I went ahead and called them to get the lower price.

Early reviews are saying the character creation/customization are absolutely amazing, and that the characters, once leveled up, can be on par with all the normal characters.

For those concerned, reviews are saying the PS3 wins in the technical department, though Yoda is apparently a better character then Vader (though the true strengths/weaknesses of characters don't come out til well into a month after release or so).
