    Rights limited in Emirates
Yet he was speaking about democracy in a deeply undemocratic country, the Emirates, where an elite of royal rulers makes virtually all the decisions. Large numbers of foreign resident workers have few legal or human rights, including no right to citizenship and no right to protest working conditions.

Some human rights groups have accused the Emirates of tolerating virtual indentured servitude, where workers from poor countries like Sri Lanka are forced to work to pay off debts to employers, and have their passports seized so they can't leave.

Officials in Abu Dhabi and the neighboring emirate of Dubai have said they are taking slow and gradual steps toward reform, both democratic and in labor rights.

In the country's first-ever elections in late 2006, the government hand-picked a group of voters to cast ballots to choose members of a government advisory panel.

But there is little clamor for elections in a wealthy country whose citizens are a privileged minority with access to free housing and lucrative government jobs. Many here say the galloping economy is evidence the government has done a good job.
Man, do you guys seriously enslave your immigrants, enabling you to live a life of complete ridiculous luxury?

UAE has got immigration figured the fuck out. Show Bush how it's done! It'll be all like

Bush: Ooh, slaves - I like how you operate....Persian!

Firas: We...aren't Persian - Mr. President, were you just watching "300"?

Bush: Choose your next words carefully, Persian!

Firas: I just told you we aren't Per....aw fuck it. Welcome to the Emirates. Can I has my tunnels back plz?

It is not slave. A lots agencies in Indonesia, Philipines are also bring the people to go to other country to look for works, especially those blue colar work. Usually the case is that there is a contract that the first few portion of their income will need to use to pay the fee for visa and immigrant process, but the mean while their employer will supply their stays, meals and the necessary daily stuff.

as for the passport, those worker from these kind of countries, employer must keep their passport instead to let them have it. The main reason is that these workers can't be truely trust on their royalty. Most of the time, if they got any chance, they will try to steal the employer's money/asset and escape away. Which happens alots in my country.

Just because they don't have chains around their necks doesn't mean they're NOT slaves.

Let's quit the semantics. These people aren't getting basic workers' rights. I'm sure this isn't the only country that does this too.

Ok, thanks for clarifying that they are slaves.

I'm not hating. Call me callous, but I find it humorous. Also, this post is way funnier when read in a thick Arabic brogue.

You know it's funny. I know a right-winger who tried to make an argument that there was no slavery in the United States, it was all indentured servitude. Involuntary, generational indentured servitude.

His argument worked as well as yours did.

The most ironic thing is it was a Republican President who ended slavery.

    Also, please don't generalize.

Not really, Republican didn't synonimize with "right-wing" back then at all like it does now.

Yep- thats part of the reason. Also, I really don't think it's a common right wing thing to deny slavery existed. Thats like saying all Iranian's don't believe the holocaust happened.

It really just pisses me off when people generalize like that for the pure reason of insulting an entire set of people.
