on that note, what about something wonky like being able to land QDs on Jailer of Temperance, despite it's complete resistance to magic damage?

i dunno about polar bulwark'd hydra, magic immune ultima, those random weapons in limbus, and gurfurlur but yea

QD works on Temp for sure, the others idk, we only seem to get Hydra when I'm RDM for Nyzul. If you mean the magic immune weapons in SE Apollyon it works there too, though there is a MDB cut into the damage.

The Temperance thing makes sense, since his magic immunity is really a 100% magic reduction. To appreciate the distinction I'm making, magic immunity would be like Ahriman shield, where everything says it is resisted. Basically the same thing that gets 0.875 for weapons and 0.5 for pots gets 0.0 for Temperance. I've never really paid attention to COR on Temperance, but does Quick Draw do damage in all forms, or just piercing? Would be interesting if the reason it ignored shell is because it's really classified as physical damage, even if it receives all the other bonuses and penalties attributed to magic damage.

From what I've seen from our other COR during Temp QD works at all times(I haven't done it personally as anything but RDM yet), relatively high resist rate(in the process of gearing him up to improve his QD set) so I couldn't tell if there were any MDB-type damage reductions going on, but I know it worked in all forms.

    Random speculation post...

There are 3 types of damage - physical, magical, and breath. Maybe QD is considered breath damage?

Is Breath subject to MDB and not TMDA? So far it seems that QD is just considered QD, a 4th type with magic-ish properties(most notably b/c of the 0 TP feed regardless of damage). Also, aren't breath modifiers only HP and direction(position within conal area)?

Similar to how there is innate physical resist and innate magic resist, there is also breath resist I would assume... I really have nothing to back this speculation up, I just thought that it was odd it would apply resist to QD sometimes and not others. Maybe since it's a "breath" attack, it bypasses temperance magic immunity.

I was thinking the breath thing myself actually, but I couldn't come up with a good way to test outside of ballista, and I hate ballista tests.

    Re: Quickdraw Usage in Endgame

I tested Heat Breath from Manticores following the previous topic and decided that Breath Damage is not mitigated by Shell 5, which is TMDA.

It's possible that QD just has a completely separate damage-calculation function in which Temperance's "zero magic damage" trait is omitted.

Really I think we're just discovering that our original models of damage and damage types are woefully inadequate.

You and I have differing opinions regarding this question, that was discussed at some length but never properly investigated (which is as much my fault as is yours). In the view I took--and still take--that breath is a classification independent of magic and physical damage, and that the term in question simply inputs a damage type and outputs a fraction of 256, it makes perfect sense that heat breath wouldn't be affected by shell. However, taking weapons and Temperance as an indication, it does seem odd that there would be one known type of attack in the game that ignores that entirely, which is why it would be interesting to see if it is indeed breath damage.

Sadly I don't even know what I think anymore, w.r.t. damage calculation. It's entirely possible that every different kind of attack uses a completely different function.

It's not the way I'd design the system, being a professional software developer. But who said SE's system designers were any good?

Well given that FFXI is full of wtf choices on a programming level kind of thinking, as well as it lacks just conventional and logical ideas, I wouldn't doubt it they have a billion kinds of functions. Their game, their job, so I won't question their weird coding practices lol.

    Re: Quickdraw Usage in Endgame

last nubbie question from me (probably, lol):

does Light Shot still do that 100% spell interrupt thing? if so, how well does it work on Meteor from KB and KS99 behe? I'm not sure where I read about the spell interrupt thing because now I can't seem to find any info on it.

    Re: Quickdraw Usage in Endgame

Not sure what you mean by that; it will only interrupt a spell cast if it puts the mob to sleep. I'm going to take a wild guess and assume you're talking about some posts on Killing Ifrit (that I'm not going to bother to dig up), where it was argued that the spell cast would not be interrupted if the mob woke up before the spell finished casting. This was disproven by Kilhart, who Dia'd an Ebony Budding and then used Light Shot to sleep it; it woke up immediately afterwards and its cast was interrupted shortly there after. Does this ring a bell at all? >_>

    Re: Quickdraw Usage in Endgame

Just a question, does anyone know if Salvage Chariots have any sort of TMDA? Given my current gear I come up to a 332 dmg Earth Shot. Can I expect to see the same dmg on Chariots barring no resists?

Then that's what you should see on Chariots, with no resists, my results a while back were similar in # to yours:

Wasn't using a Pendant, and no Denali Legs, different #s on Wizard's Roll on those I believe.

For just Quick Draw, Corsair's Gun/+1 would be better than Coffinmaker and Denali Jacket is better than Skadi body.

I'd also recommend dropping the Staff Strap for an Axe Grip if you have MP merits from another job, that's another 10 MP you'd have to kill for Ugly Pendant latent, and the STR will give you a boost to your WS' if you're shooting, otherwise everything else is right on. I have 3 MP merits, so I had to make a separate macro to hit before I use QD to swap in and out 2 Physical Earrings to kill 50 MP(I need to get a Cassie for this, 50 doesn't cut it when I /mage) for the pendant latent.

In other related QD news, I got to do JoTemp last night as COR, and QD fucking ruled its world. I got lucky that it popped on Windsday as I have Furin Obi, as COR/RDM w/ Wizard's I was consistently hitting 400+, I believe my high was 423 w/ a 5 on Wizard's. I really do think that QD is just its own form of damage that we can't lump in with melee/magic/breath, it just happens to work like magic, but pressing out 400+ damage every 50-60 seconds with no TP feed is very nice for a support job.

In terms of subjob for a QD-only fight, I think I'd have to be pressed to take /RDM over /BLM if you're going to be in a party where you need to be using Evoker's, Cure 3 is a faster/more productive way to kill your MP for the Ugly Pendant latent than nuking for 0, despite giving up the extra 4 MAB. Last night I kept getting hit by Ballad as well, between that and Evoker's it was actually difficult to kill MP in the time between QDs, I would think it'd be even more so if /BLM with Conserve MP procs happening here and there.
