1. Final Fantasy - All of them, because I don't feel the need to give each game its own separate number (except tactics because it is inherently different). My favorite game is FFX-X-II (I consider this one somewhat continuous game). I loved the graphics and the CSes and the story and an actual turn based system (which, in case everyone forget, was completely different from any of the other battle systems in the other FFs). X-II has possibly the most fast-paced, enjoyable battle system I have ever played in a straight RPG. The story was a bit girly, but I forgive it because I did, in fact, replay it 5 times to get that 100% and Mascot (lost my memory card once).
2. Final Fantasy Tactics - I love this game. It made me love tactics-style games. 'Nuff said.
3. Paper Mario - No joke. These games are SO much fun. They require coordination, and are just generally very fun and actually not uber easy.
4. Fire Emblem is such a great tactics type game. The story is always engaging, and the style is very its own.
5. Tie: Skies of Arcadia/Star Ocean 3/Baten Kaitos : They all have their merits, and provide fun, different RPGs with their own personalities. I couldn't pick.
By the way: What is Tactics Ogres and where can I find it?
Tactics Ogre is an early PS1 game in the United States. In Japan it was released for the Super Famicom. It was made by more or less the same team which would eventually make Final Fantasy Tactics. It is much more difficult and in my mind the story is superior.Originally Posted by Ryushii

I'd suggest torrenting the CD. It's probably the second most valuable PS1 game after Valkyrie Profile. I *think* someone may have completed a translation of the Super Famicom copy so that may be an option also.Originally Posted by Ryushii
Doesn't look like it was ever completed.. the translation that is. Best bet is the PS1 game.
Top 5 Favorite RPG's:
1) Chrono Trigger - I got this game in '95, older bro bought it for me for my BDay, I was like 10. I've beaten the game over 30 times easily. Awesome story, characters, graphics, etc. To this day the graphics/sound effects/story hold up. True classic.
2) Dragon Quest Series - So good!
3) Final Fantasy Tactics & Earthbound - Great games!
4) Super Mario RPG & FF6- I hate listing SquareSoft SNES RPGs, but lets face it, they're the best ;>
5) Lunar Series - I think people know why.
Great runner ups:
Tales of Destiny, Xenogears, Chrono Cross, Secret of Mana, Breath of Fire 1-3, Suikoden 1-3, Castlevania SOTN, Lufia 1-2, Okage (PS2), Albert Odyssey (Saturn), Saga Frontier 1~2, Blue Dragon, Valkyrie Profile, Kingdom Hearts, Dark Cloud, Star Ocean, etc etc.
Can name more, but I'll stop now :bagel:
1) Chrono Trigger - I was never able to afford the game, but I would rent it all the time and happily replay it from the beginning each time. Eventually, I got it for for my Birthday and played it non-stop until I got every ending. I still don't think I've gotten all of them to this day. My SNES is full of pennies now.
2) SMT3: Nocturne - I haven't beaten the game yet, but wow, this game is amazing. After thinking that Square was the only company that was able to produce a decent RPG nowadays, Atlus has blown me away with the PS2 SMT series. I know it's unfair to judge it since I haven't beaten it yet, but this game is just that damn good. Bought this right after I beat Persona 3. Gonna try DDS after this.
3) Xenogears - To be honest, when I first played this, I didn't understand the story that well; but damn the fighting was awesome. After beating it back than, and again now (I replayed before Xenosaga came out) I was really able to appreciate every aspect of this game.
4) Final Fantasy 9 - Easily the best Final Fantasy. If you disagree, you're WRONG. j/k
5) Persona 3 - Fast paced random battles, challenging boss battles, great production values, and an awesome story; Found myself enjoying the day to day social links and events more than grinding, luckily only needed to go to Tartarus only 1-2 times a month. I enjoyed it so much that I've begun hunting down the other SMT games.
I dont understand why so many people like FF9 now. Everyone used to hate it before, but it's mentioned more often than FF7 nowaday on the internet (not just bg).
No clue, and I still don't think it's that great personally.
There wasn't anything special about the combat at all and the story wasn't all that.
It's a decent game with one of the most well-known traps in gaming, that's all I see when I look at FF9.
Getting Excalibur II was fun, although a lot easier than I thought it would be!
Oops! So fucking sue me!SF3 was for Saturn >_>![]()
ff7 was great in the fact that it revolutionized modern rpgs. ff9 however had a better gameplay system in place, as much as loved the materia system i also loved the learning skills from ff9.
Material System was the reason I hated FF7... in battle every character felt the same outside of limit breaks.Originally Posted by izembo
Think it could be bandwagoning. But who knows. I remember before people wouldn't give it the chance it deserved (but the style is weird, but it's not all cyber punk QQ) and now it's as you say.Originally Posted by Kaylia
5. Secret of Mana
Really fun/good game.
4. Suikoden
Recruiting all the ppl was fun.
3. FFIV
I really liked when the world exploded/switched, the smn town, the secret swords that were hidden in the final dungeon etc.
2. FFX
Storyline was excellent and the music and characters were really engaging.
1. Shadowrun (SNES)
I feel like nobody has ever really played this game but it's so good. This may have been the first game to introduce a gladiator-style arena fight system with monetary rewards (Elder Scrolls: Oblivion had something extremely similar and it seems that they might have been influenced by it). Also, I liked the futuristic setting and all the technological ideas in there which pre-dated the Matrix movies etc.
I thought the Genesis Shadowrun was infinitely better.Originally Posted by Pacha

lol @ vivi's face
The only problems I had with FF9 was that the chocobo game really annoyed me, and the way you obtain the best weapon in the game was kind of stupid in an RPG style game.
I would say FF7 has a better story, but FF9 was more fun simply because it was newer. My vote is for FF7, with FF9 close behind.
7 had a better story? disagreeeeee.
