cool, i'm glad i picked up that used copy for $15, I knew it was rare but didn't know it was valuable. I got it around the time Tactics Ogre Advanced came out, after I played the N64 version. I didn't even finish the PS1 version because i liked the N64 versions so much more. How much does it go for these days?Originally Posted by Vinen
Yeah, I have an unopened copy of both of those two games. Paid around ~200 for each. I am a collector so it was worth it. I got my original copy of Tactics Ogre in a online trade with someone on some random forum... I traded them Quest 64 ROFL ROFL ROFL ROFL.Originally Posted by evilbau

how about opened & used? Its not in the best condition vs your new ones. I don't think i'll sell it though, i'll keep it in my binder probably and feign ignorance for lulz if anyone notices it in there. just curious what it is worth.
Open and Used w/o Manual probably will only fetch around 50. w/ Manual is ~100 I'd think. I haven't looked up what they are currently going for recently.Originally Posted by evilbau

since i waded into this thread I should include my top 5 (fyi i just skimmed the thread so I might echo someone else's sentiments, sorry)
1. Final Fantasy VI - Not the first RPG I played (Dragon Warrior gets that honor, free with Nintendo Power subscription!), this was the first RPG where the story really got to me. I played IV before this one, but not until subsequent playthroughs did I really appreciate it. VI was the first RPG I really 'got into' so it holds a nostalgic #1 position. Aside from nostalgia, there was a lot I liked about the mechanics of this game.
2. Chrono Trigger - Just about the most perfectly executed 16-bit RPG. It had so many cool things: hidden characters, multiple endings, techs which depended on which characters were in your party, new game+. Story was decent too, music is still regarded by me as the best.
3. Final Fantasy Tactics - A game you could probably play forever, this was the first turn based strategy game I played since Shining Force II for the genesis (many years earlier). There was so much customization and replay, and each battle you still had to be strategic, rather than spam 'Attack' as I had gotten used to at by now from my RPGs. Story was really good although too bad there weren't cutscenes like the other FFs.
4. Advance Wars/Fire Emblem - Hard to choose between these two, they are excellently done strategy games with RPG elements. I almost picked Shining Force here as I consider that series really good as well, but the nostalgia factor isn't strong enough for me to pick it over these two series with its superior mechanics.
5. Final Fantasy XII - I feel people's expectations of what FF should be has clouded what in my opinion is a really good game. I loved the story, and the characters were great. It was incredibly easy and the Summons were pretty useless but on the whole the game was polished. The story reminded me of Star Wars (episode IV) but thats not a bad thing.
Square dominates my top 5, because imo they have and still make the best RPGs. Even really good other RPGs like Suikoden, Disgaea, Diablo (if you can call that an RPG), and some of the better PC RPGs don't come close. I think I'm pretty fair but based on my choices I could see how someone could think I'm a Square fanboy.
From what I've seen, many people on this forum practice what I like to call an act of "reverse-fanboyism" aka they try to be different and like other stuff despite how good the most popular stuff is. No, I don't everyone who doesn't like the "mainstream" stuff does this. Neither do I think that everyone who does like the mainstream is being a fanboy.Originally Posted by Exoduso
I disagree. Most people on this forum have played a huge amount of rpg games, even before FFVII's time. They see it for what FFVII really is, just a normal, average, JRPG. FFVII isn't anything special compared to whats out, or what came before it, which includes: FFVI, before VII, and say, Persona3, after VII. There's games that are better and are far superior to FFVII. The absolute only reason FFVII gets so much praise that it gets is because for many it was their first RPG, and also the first one to use 3D graphics and fully rendered characters on pre-rendered backgrounds.
It's an average game, and it allowed other developers to take that same change with their games, but FFVII is hardly the crème de la crème of RPGS that 'fanboys' make it out to be.
Pretty much sums it up. We're not bashing it to be "anti-FF7" since that's the "cool" thing to do, nor are we really BASHING it... it's just an OKAY game though compared to other RPGs. People who has STARTED the series with FF7 seem to think it's the 'zomgbestestevarmirite' which it really isn't.Originally Posted by Marcin
Yes, it was the first 3D FF, it was revolutionary, main villian is fucking awesome etc... but there are better games out there. People who praise it nonestop are mainly praising the nostalgia of it being the first revolutionary game in the mainstream FF series rather than what it actually is: a medicore jRPG at best.
(BTW, I'm an FF8 fanboyit was my first so I totally get where they're coming from, but I don't claim it's the best game ever created. It sure had its flaws, same with FF7.)
Yup, FF7 was like the 25th RPG I played, and always stated that it was average when the subject was brought up and a lot of GOOD RPGs aren't actually popular to begin with.
FF7 did a few good things, I admit it, but for me to say "It isn't as good as people say it is" isn't necessarily mean I'm practicing "reverse-fanboyism" and as a matter of fact many mainstream games are generally just that, average, it's just badass in some sort of way to have a huge fanbase behind it.
However "reverse-fanboyism" was a common thing with FF7 years back (like idk... 98?) and a lot of people do bash it back then for really no reason just cause it made them look different (I've always kept my stance of it being not bad, but it's way too over-rated something you don't say in a den of FF7 fanboys back when it was mad popular)
Though I admit I'm a Chrono Trigger Fanboy.![]()
Im a Final Fantasy Tactics Fanboy <3~
1. Castlevania Symphony of the Night - Really needs no explaining, one of the greatest video games ever made.
2. Final Fantasy Legend II - Old Old Gameboy Game, actually part of the SaGa series but renamed to snatch up American audiences. I've probably played this game more then any other in history.
3. Final Fantasy VI - Best cast of characters ever in an RPG
4. Star Ocean Second Story - Favorite battle system in an RPG, pretty solid storyline, and an absolutely huge game all around. So glad this is being ported to PSP.
5. Tales of Destiny II (Tales of Eternia in Japan/Europe) - Horrendous, awful voice acting, but the combat/story were both very nicely done, and the graphics still hold up quite well today. The PSP port doesn't add anything new other then being in widescreen, but it's a good pickup (port was never released in America though).
1. FFX, the story totally gripped me, i even cried a bit at the end lol, <3 the summon battle system, it was awesome!!!, blitzball was fun for hours, and the prayer to yevon/bliztball salute thingy is funny!! i do it irl sometimes to friends !!lols /dork
2. Shadow Hearts2 - was totally fun to play and great story, + Yuri is a badass character with his soul fusion abilities, crazy ending.
3. FFX-2, i loved the system and cuz its set in my favourite world ever,, SPIRA! rawr. i just loved revisitng the areas of old FFX-2 and going further into the world of spira, and vegnagun was so cool looking imo.
4. Star Ocean3 - i loved this games battle system, great story, when i first played through it seemed as if i'd be playing it for ages, love the whole Creator story, the planet Styx and everything, also Albel is teh pnx character.
5. FF9 - first FF i ever played, the graphics blew me away, and i loved the story, never did get round to finishing it thought, i got bored towards the part after the village full of Vivi's!...RALLY HO! xD
1. Final Fantasy X - I absolutely loved the storyline, the characters, and the ending. The battle system was great, too.
2. Dragon Warrior VII - The environments in this game were just amazing, not to mention battling all of the classic monsters was a lot of fun. The duration it takes to complete DW7 is long, yet it never causes me to lose excitement as I play through it.
3. Skies of Arcadia (DC) - Another outstanding game with fantastic environments. The graphics were great and had tiny details other games would never have.
4. Grandia - The graphics were outstanding for it's time, and the storyline blooms into perfection throughout it.
5. Legend of Mana - Loved this game from the minute I picked it up and started playing.
Not bringing action/RPG games like castlevania or crystalis into this:
1. Super Mario RPG
2. Shining Force
3. Final Fantasy Tactics
4. Chrono-trigger
5. Legend of dragoon
I would put legend of legaia, and FF7-9 after those.
You forgot to say why, I really want to know since I see Legend of Dragoon and Shining Force so high on your list!Originally Posted by fantasticdan
I'd like to know why you like them so much, obviously you have your own opinions and I won't challenge them, but I would still like to know why!
Well I guess I should try to come up with my list lol
1) Chrono Trigger: My first RPG I truly fell in love with, and admittedly reason for my fanboyism of it XD
2) Final Fantasy 6: First FF I truly liked overall, music was outstanding which also plays a big part of me liking a game <<;
3) Shining Force 2 / Final Fantasy Tatics: To choose between the two is blasphemy D: both amazing SRPGs
4) Skies of Arcadia / Grandia 2 : Both amazing DC games, and I love both equally.
5) Phantasy Star 4: Best of the PS series imo
This is my list I guess currently, or what I can remember lol, but I've played so many good RPGs it's hard for me to actually rank them personally.
Really tough decision and it changes with the tide soooo(and a big square fanboi)
Tie for #1
1.Final Fantasy VII-Loved this one, borrowed from a friend when I traded my 8 with his 7 and loved it to the bitter end. Since I've started playing Crisis Core and it's built on Zack(Who is so fucking awesome) this's getting bumped up.
1.Chrono Trigger-...Jesus with a team like this that made this game, no wonder it's pure fucking gold. I loved the music and I think the only thing that I want more is another entry into the franchise.
2. Final Fantasy 10-<3'd the story here, the visuals, just everything felt pretty fucking epic. Just loved it, the music, Suteki Da Ne, the leitmotifs in the other souns, the characters, the villains, Jecht and Auron(very good prequel plz; Braska's pilgrimage; would've rathered that than 10-2 though 10-2 was pretty good)
3. Final Fantasy 8-I loved the love story <3. Squall was pretty kickass imo and I loved how this game felt so...real to me more than all of the others. Out of all of the ones to date I think this one felt the most realistic and I like it <3. I just hope whenever they decide to expand this(because you know they will eventually in some shape or form) they do a really good job keeping the feel of it.
4. Final Fantasy 9/6-Yea another tie, <_< too lazy to seperate 'em. But playing both of these games felt so much a like to so I guess it's kinda good that it goes here. Zidane and Locke are different but they remind me so much of each other, besides just being thieves. 9's story was pretty awesome even though it was a pretty basic save the world story, and 6 is epic in just about everything. <3 Kefka's laugh.
5. Kingdom Hearts 2- Loves it <_< bought FM and haven't been able to really play it that much though, but I did love the battle system and the characters, especially the Organization(sp lazy)members.
Eh there's prolly some I'm missing, and this list is pretty much only ff titles but meh. Too time consuming to think to deep into it. Tbh looking back I'm not even sure how I came up with th rank. I like 'em all pretty much equally. (Except 12 w, but I'm gonna rego through it again to see if I can make myself change my opinion of it, + wanna do a lot more stuff b4 i open Revenant Wings). Haven't had the chance to play Xenogears yet or the Suikoden games(Which I WANT 2 PLAY, but wanna get 1 and 2 before i play the rest*esp 2*).
Edit: And Legend of Dragoon was pretty damn pimp too.<_< meh
Edit 2: And I do agree w/ whatever someone said about reverse fanboyism, I do see that a lot, people bashing it because it's ff7, but opinions are opinions so I don't see the real big deal about arguing it or calling someone a fanboy over it. You like what you like, lol. A fanboy is probably a fanboy because he likes all the shit they made, so more power to them.
Edit 3: Hey krandor!
#5. FF9-The ending, only ending which made Me get a little emotional.
#4. FFX10-Tidus is a beast, hands down his demeanor sold me on the idea
#3. Earthbound-Just for the simple fact I had a chance to demolish clowns, made it worth every second.
#2. Chrono Trigger-Self explanatory
#1. FFx11 online- Because I'm currently playing it as we speak.
Bah take out Earthbound, replace that with Secret of Mana!!!!!!!!!!!!!
