Re: Jonah Goldberg and Jon Stuart go at it on Daily Show

'His audience isn't smart so they'll be bullied into believing Jon Stewart because it makes them feel smart and informed.' Hollower words are seldom spoken, BRP.
Wut? What I'm saying is that he was able to get away with bullying rather than say why what the guy was saying is stupid. That's because he's a comedian. The audience isn't being bullied. People tend to take the show too seriously like it was intellectual discussion.

EDIT: And in this case, he really came off as an ass. It shouldn't be a crime to think Jon Steward can look like an asshole.

John Stewart was extremely rude and seemingly dismissed anything Goldberg had to say. It was very frustrating seeing him be so disrespectful. He didn't really try to understand Goldberg's point which, even if they are wrong, is ignorant.

Re: Jonah Goldberg and Jon Stuart go at it on Daily Show

I really didn't see this as being particularly rude here. Jon Stewart either felt the guy was making no points and just trying to draw wild links between different -isms, or the things the guy was saying (like the organic argument) were so wild he was just in a state of disbelief. He wasn't calling the guy names or anything. John was trying to define facism in the conventional sense to try to get the guy to draw parallels to progressivism and "the state over the people", and the guy was just basically failing. It proved his arguments were a huge stretch - that doesn't make Stewart an asshole.

Well according to Maxx, he had already skimmed the book, so he presumably decided that the guy's basic arguments weren't worth letting him try to explain.

What's more, even if he was being a dick, that's what he gets paid for. And the book got some publicity (I'm guessing most of us would never have heard of it without this thread at least).

If hes a stupid person who wrote a stupid book, does he deserve respect?

Jon Stewart doesn't owe him a podium from which to spout the same drivel he wrote in his book. If he fails to answer Jon's original questions then he's going to get the nasty barbs. If he's unprepared to do anything but parrot his dust jacket he's unprepared for a serious interview, much less one without any pretense like the ones aired on Daily Show.

He gave the guy 18 minutes and it was edited into a tv-sized bite. I hope we get the 18 minutes released sometime to get a fuller picture instead of just a smackdown.

Though this guy is pretty nutty.

Exactly...I'd like to know which "point" you're talking about, Marsala, because as far as I could tell Jon spent the entire interview trying to actually get Goldberg to make a straight point. After ten minutes listening to Goldberg throw around all of these hollow terms (the isms) and false correlations, I'd be inclined to give up and just start making fun of the guy too. There's a point where it becomes pointless to try and elicit a serious response anymore. I think Jon gave Goldberg more than ample time to present a solid argument, which Jonah failed to do.

Tearing apart an argument instead of trying to piece together a bunch of half-baked ideas doesn't make Stuart a dick. That's not his job to try and find/make Jonah's argument for him. The guest should come already prepared with a legitimate, well-thought out argument with as few holes as possible. Jonah's argument wasn't airtight and as a result he was punished for it.

And Stuart wasn't saying "zomg big wordz go away! not welcome heree!" He was saying that Goldberg was just throwing out all these hollow labels to try and support his argument. Not only that, but Goldberg's definitions of the -isms were convoluted and outrageous. Do people bashing guartz get called dicks? No, because guartz makes outlandish statements that anyone with a brain can pick apart with ease.

Stuart didn't even try to listen. Half the time he is scoffing after he asks a question while Goldberg is trying to explain. It was pretty obvious he didn't want to listen.

I wasn't saying he had good points, just that Stuart was being a jerk. But hey it's his show I suppose.

What I saw in that interview was a right wing hack trying to peddle the same opinions, sterotypes and flat out bullshit that he's apparently made a living out of with his writing. When he's spewing that crap onto the page or nestled away with his like-minded bretheren he doesn't get any feedback, and he's free to keep rambling on. On the Daily Show he doesn't have that luxury and either he's no good at making his arguments on the spot, or his arguments are so pathetic they can't stand up to examination and analysis from someone who isn't functionally retarded.

So if you have some evidence that this guy deserves an ounce of respect, feel free. From the (admitedly small) amount I've seen, the guy deserves a far more rigourous dressing down than he was provided already.

I believe respect is earned. This guy had his chance and failed. Despite accusations of bullying, Stewart did let the man speak, and he had nothing of worth to say.

Re: Jonah Goldberg and Jon Stuart go at it on Daily Show

It was entertaining but to the people who cry about his being partisan or right wing, that shit was a given before he got the interview. Not only did he basically show up to get laughed at (which, given that it's a comedy show is understandable) but then he gets hacked at for trying to spout his opinion? No shit, that's the point of an interview in the first place. Unless it's established that what the person is saying doesn't really matter because you don't care in the first place. You can't really have it both ways though. Putting up the pretense of giving a person some time to express their view on something, only to not do so, shouldn't be immediately lambasted because he tried to do just that.

The part I did find funny though was when he said "so you're trying to stop people from just wildly using the word, and to accomplish that you..."
