    Re: LOST Season 4

Jin and Sun are only boring because they haven't really done anything in season 4. I agree with the rest of your post though and I think Claire in the casket is a distinct possibility.

The only reason I may say no is because everyone really likes her on the Island and why wouldn't any of the 5 besides Jack go to her funeral or w/e? Of course it could be that she was supposed to get off the Island with the other 6 and something went terribly wrong and now they feel guilty? Also why would Jack have the balls to go see her funeral but be too scared to see Aaron?

Jin and Sun are in the coffin. They packed them both in there together.

I don't think there is a way to approach this quite yet... more story has to be revealed before anything becomes clear. As someone previously mentioned, something is probably going to happen involving Jack/Claire/Aaron and Aaron brings back those horrible memories. He may see it fit to visit his sister at her funeral as a "cleansing" of sorts, but when he sees Aaron he remembers the Island and everything he experienced on it (including this event that hasn't been seen yet, if there is one).

Again, I'm probably way off, but I'm just going off what we have to work with.

There are only four possibilities that I see for Claire:

    1) She's part of the O6 --> made it off the island

    2) She's part of the O6 --> dead in the coffin (doesn't make sense, given how popular the o6 seem to have become)

    3) She's not part of the O6 --> based on Desmond's vision, she gets off the island on a helicopter (with Aaron), but something happens between that "rescue" and the final rescue that she either gets left or dies.

    4) She's not part of the O6 --> died somewhere after that chopper rescue, they brought her dead body back, it's her body in the coffin

I think #3 is what will be played out. Can't wait for the Desmond episode.

I always found their back story kind of boring. Maybe that's just me, though.

I was going to post this, but you beat me to it. I still think the person in the casket is Michael. He would be the last (second to last?) member of the Oceanic 6, and he would be ostracized by the rest of the group since they know what he did on the island. We know the actor who played Michael is returning to the show, at least for a few episodes. Nobody showed up to the funeral, and it was in a poor neighborhood that they seemed to make an effort to show was heavily African-American. None of these scenarios really point to Claire. My thoughts would be Claire likely would have returned to Australia after getting back, rather than dying in a poor, black neighborhood in LA.

If not Michael, I think Locke's a much more likely candidate to be in the coffin than Claire -- he's (relatively) poor, possibly crippled once he leaves the island, and has no real friends or family back home. I could see him ending up in the neighborhood where the funeral was. Judging from the (current) situation on the island, the rest of the survivors may not look too favorably at him upon returning home, so not attending the funeral would seem likely.

I would agree with this take, as well. Just because she gets off the island in a helicopter (to the freighter?) doesn't mean she gets home safely. Perhaps Jack sends her off the island to the freighter, where she gets killed, and feels guilty that he sent her? /shrug, not enough information yet to know for sure.

Does anyone have easy access to the Desmond flashback episode showing the helicopter, and can compare it to the helicopter that Frank is piloting now? If they are different or unclear, we can't draw any conclusions, but if they are clearly the same, the Lost writers are canny enough that we can chalk that up to not being coincidence.

I had to lol a little but I think you may be on to something. You are right about Sun also, her back stories are kinda meh. I do really like Jin though and I hope they dont kill him off especially after his DUI

Aaron's gotta be one of the O6. It was explicitly stated that the episode would reveal another one of them, and the only person in it who was even remotely tied to the island but wasn't already known was Aaron.

One more guess for who's in the casket:

Rose. She's black, she wasn't rich, if I recall from her flashback, she doesn't have a lot of friends outside of Bernard who, presumably, didn't get off the island. Finally, she was dying of cancer before she got to the island; it may very well return once she leaves. But I'm not sure why the others wouldn't have come to her funeral. Hmmm. I still think she's in the Top 3 after Michael and Locke. But my prediction that Locke ends up running the new "Island Others Cult" still stands, so .... eh, maybe not. I still vote Michael.

It's definitely not Rose or Locke. Remember, whoever is in that coffin drove Jack to suicide. Neither of those two would do that, and Locke wouldn't even leave the Island IMO... he's like a God there.

well, when jack talks to kate about the viewing for the coffin she told asked him 'why would I go?'. also, the guy at the viewing asked if he was a friend or family and jack said neither? my guess is ben, seeing as how hes the only 'way' of protecting their friends on the island. jack hears he died, and thinks its over? it would make sense, since ben has been a pain in their asses for so long, and he's neither friend or family to everybody there. also the reason why jack wants to go back to the island, to make sure his friends are gonna live.

You've watched the Season 3 finale more recently than I have, but I remember being under the impression that Jack thinking about committing suicide was not directly connected to the funeral, but sort of a "I have to do this before I go," type of thing. Perhaps I was mistaken, or perhaps it wasn't clear and that was just how I interpreted it. I still think it's Michael in the coffin. I don't think Locke will ever willingly leave the island, but I think the chain of events are more likely to put him there than most of the others.

Of course, this show has done a good job of completely blowing away all speculation, yet still making sense with how it all works. The only people we know it 100% couldn't be (because we've seen them alive after it) are Jack, his ex-wife and Kate. If you eliminate all the dead people, we could probably come up with a reasonable one paragraph summary of how just about anybody ended up in that coffin.

I don't think it's Ben because they show him controlling Sayid in another flash-forward...

    Lol, true.

If you remember back, Jack's driving on that road just before the bridge and he phones Kate. He leaves a small, cut-off message and then hangs up, proceeding to pull over and get that newspaper clipping out of his jacket pocket. He reads it again, crumples it up, gets out of the car to stand on the bridge when the accident behind him occurs.

I may be wrong, but that seems like it was the direct cause.

ZOMG it's Jack's self in the past! That's why he didn't want him to open it.

Joking aside it couldn't possibly be Claire in the coffin. She would never give Aaron up at this point. Also the flash forward in Through the Looking Glass is probably the one that is furthest in the future time line, Jack was a fucking mess shaking all about. There is no way he could have shown up at Kate's trial looking the way he was.

There was speculation a few pages back about the order of the Flash Forwards. General consensus was that Sayid's came last, although I tend to think that the Season 3 finale came last, Sayid's just before it. The writers stated in an EW interview recently that although the Flash Forwards aren't necessarily being told in chronological order from episode to episode, they are keeping them chronological within each episode. They cited the Sayid episode and that he did kill the golfer before he killed the woman; dialogue cut from the final episode indicated it as such. Hell, the person in the coffin could be Sayid, and the others didn't want to go see his funeral because it was found out that he was a hired hit man or that he was working for Ben (or both).

    Re: LOST Season 4

Desmond's vision didn't show the helicopter, and thus far we've had two entries into the island: Naomi, and the rest of her crew that came with the chopper.

The person in the coffin, as was previously mentioned, can't be:
Locke - Hurley makes a reference that he "should have gone with Jack," which leads me to believe Locke is not off the island. Secondly, and this is much more important -- the last thing Locke wants is to get off of the island. He has stopped every attempt to leave, including the first one where Sayid tried to radio out.

Rose - Rose has only been given one flashback, and that was shared with Bernard. She's too minimal of a character to be given a spot as one of the O6. It's possible that they would, but given how masterfully the writers choose how to bring out a character's significance and show their importance, I honestly doubt Rose could be the final one.

Ben - I get the feeling that Linus wouldn't even get a funeral. Not that he won't die, but if he does, it'd have something to do with the Island -- they wouldn't hold a funeral for him. Plus, the point of where the funeral is held, mentioned by Byrd, is valid here. Ben doesn't fit.

Jack / Hurley / Sayid / Kate / Aaron / Desmond - Desmond might not be part of the O6, and it's possible that Aaron is not (it was mentioned that he wasn't part of the flight manifest, so he might not be considered an O6, but then again he still was on the flight, albeit inside Claire). It can't be the first 5 names because they're all alive. Desmond's upcoming episode will show that he was either: Part of O6, on the island, or something happens that leads to his death when he's with Sayid going towards the freighter.

Anyone that died on the Island - For instance, Charlie. They wouldn't be holding a funeral for him firstly, and secondly they certainly wouldn't have it in a downtown LA neighborhood.

I think there's a general consensus in that the person who is in the coffin has to have somehow survived the island. It's either going to be:
-A member of the O6 (unlikely, because there'd be such a huge crowd attending the funeral)
-Michael (likely, but you have to question where Walt is...)
-A relative of one of the O6 members (unlikely, the significance of the coffin scene is much more important than simply a third-cousin of Jack's being in there)
    -Time-travel shit (?)

Edit: By the way, did everyone see the mobisodes? There are two that are absolutely great. One is the one with Ethan, and the other is with Christian Shepherd...I can't wait to see them tie in Jack's father with the Island. And I've downloaded all the episodes of Lost, if anyone wants a particular episode, give me a heads up - I'll either upload it or send it via AIM.

I've seen them all, and my favorites are the one aboout Walt killing the birds, Jack and Ben playing chess (titled "King of the Castle"... so much relevance there), and Jin's freakout on the golf course.

Got a question to everyone who talk about time traveling. On what basis can you say there is time traveling? The clock thing only indicated time goes slower on the island than it does outside.

Like I said a few page ago, I would put my money on the magnetic field around the island slowing time down (similar to high gravity field). Would explain why radiowave aren't getting out (red shifting as they go back to normal time), would also explains why Waltz is old now and why there is no "time paradox" (relativity has no paradox)

It's pretty clear that Hurley going with Locke caused repercussions which Jack and Hurley both now regret. I'm not sure how that implies that Locke is not off the island, though. I think if Locke were forced to leave the island (and potentially go back to the wheelchair), suicide might follow shortly. His funeral would have nobody there, although your point about being a part of the O6 generating media coverage is probably the best argument against him. I still think he's probably the second best candidate, simply because of Kate's reaction to Jack saying she wasn't at the funeral in "Through the Looking Glass."

I'll mostly buy into this argument, but for different reasons. Kate would be there (or at least wouldn't have the same reaction), and so would the media. I think the person in the coffin is most likely NOT a member of the O6.

We know that Kate and Jack are still alive (presumably Aaron as well), but we don't know the sequencing of the flash forwards; Sayid's episode could have happened before "Through the Looking Glass," meaning he could be dead in that episode. He's being manipulated by Ben into killing people, it sure seems as though that profession could easily result in death and a social ostracization from the rest of the O6, if they were to know about it. But again, the O6 are clearly celebrities, of which Sayid is clearly a member.

The only reasonable explanation I can see for media not covering the funeral of the O6 is enough time has passed that they are no longer the media sensations they once were. But that seems too long to have passed, however, without showing some signs of aging, which Kate & Jack realistically haven't (and the show would acknowledge). Even a "disgraced" member of the O6 such as Michael or Locke would create a media presence. Kate also implies that 'He will be wondering where I am,' likely referring to Aaron (although quite possibly not). I would guess between 1 and 3 years have passed since they left the island through to "Through the Looking Glass." Clearly, enough time for a murder trial for Kate, but not so much the characters have aged. Which means the O6 are still celebrities enough for them to attend a funeral.

-Michael (likely, but you have to question where Walt is...)
Still on the island, with Locke and Jacob. Walt's powers and ability to telepathically communicate (???) with Locke imply to me he's got some supernatural ability, perhaps similar to that of Jacob's. I really don't see Walt leaving the island, at least not permanently; if he does, I think he comes back, and I think Michael stays in LA and dies (suicide?). The time distortion between the island and the outside world also leaves an option open to explain why Walt (whose actor was 12 when the series started in 2004) will have completely gone through puberty by the time the show ends. The freighter folk have not discussed the passing of time with the people on the island yet, but I'm thinking at some point, someone's going to ask what day it is of someone on the freighter folk (i.e. Hurley asks, Hey, is it December 21 yet, cuz that's my birthday) and their timelines aren't going to match at all.

Ahh, I forgot how awesome the Walt episode was. We're still in the dark about the metaphoric "box" on the Island that gives you whatever you want, but I immediately thought of that when Walt was doing that. But then, that would mean Walt wants birds to fly into walls and die, like he did while he was with his mother & her boyfriend. I have high expectations for when they reveal Walt's "powers" -- normally, a show would take a shit when explaining something like this, but Lost has never let me down.

I mildly glanced at something about the writers noting time travel (I think it was also mentioned somewhere earlier, maybe page 10 or 11 on this thread). I have no idea, and I refuse to seek spoilers (like that post with the small text in the thread). Farthest I'll go is discuss it with people on the same boat as I am who are making guesses.

It was about time (no pun intended) that Lost started explaining time. The only symbols or concepts we've had prior to the time-discrepancy of the clocks were the episodes where the days were marked (i.e. "Day 31"), or Jin's watch, or Jack's mobisode watch, and maybe a few others here and there. Watching the show from the start, you really lose track of time on the Island. I thought the Mirror-Moon-Matter theory had an interesting explanation on the Island's time and how it differs slightly from the rest of the world. It's a good read.

What are some things you guys are looking forward to/threads that really need to be explained by the show? Obviously, one's different than "who's in the coffin" and "rescue"
For me, there are a few:
    Rousseau, her crew
    Walt's "special" powers
    Locke's powers with the Island
    Jacob
    Christian Shepherd on the Island

Also, the series is set to end in like 20 more episodes, right? So Season 5 will be the end of it?
