You're all but guaranteed to drop an item if you've player killed someone who didn't attack back before you died, which, while sounding odd, actually happens all the fucking time because people will purposely not fight back. I wouldn't be surprised if he dropped something like an overenchanted boss jewel. Plus, you lose a % of your EXP, which, when you figure in L2's Korean-ness, amounts to literally hours and hours of work.
