Difference between white republican and taliban member?

    Apparently none.

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22686544/

WASHINGTON - A former U.S. congressman and delegate to the United Nations was indicted Wednesday, accused of being part of a terrorist fundraising ring that allegedly sent more than $130,000 to an al-Qaida and Taliban supporter who has threatened U.S. and international troops in Afghanistan.

The former Republican congressman from Michigan, Mark Deli Siljander, was charged with money laundering, conspiracy and obstructing justice for allegedly lying about lobbying senators on behalf of an Islamic charity that authorities said was secretly sending funds to terrorists.

A 42-count indictment accuses the Islamic American Relief Agency of paying Siljander $50,000 for the lobbying — money that turned out to be stolen from the U.S. Agency for International Development.
I lol'd. Yes, inflamatory thread title and old news.

Fred Upton won a seat in the House in 1986 after defeating incumbent Republican Rep. Mark Siljander in the primary.

Siljander had attracted controversy with his strong religious convictions _ he issued a tape recording that asked local fundamentalists to help "break the back of Satan" by praying and fasting for his re-election. Upton's upset of Siljander embittered Siljander's fellow conservatives in the House, with Rep. Robert Dornan, R-Calif., accusing Upton of running a "slimy, lying campaign."
And don't take this thread as political commentary, simply made for the irony of it.

Not surprised. There have been numerous terrorists who came from America and attacked fellow Americans.

Now a connection to Al-Qaeda might be new but don't quote me on that.

It was acceptable in the '80s. Leaders change, sides change, if they were allies at the time, then it was cool.

If Japan or Germany ever turn on us again, will anybody be criticizing any support we've ever given them? Does anyone hold World War II against Japan or Germany? Things are different now*, and they'll be even more different in the future. Who knows which friend will next turn foe, or vice versa?

the difference here is that these people are still 'radical' and militaristic, i dont want to make broad sweeping generalizations as i try to stay out of the news as it is perpetually disheartening, but i'm pretty sure (one can't help but hear the repeated criticisms of US foreign policy) these guys were armed in order to semi-covertly take care of a situation that benefitted the US but could not themselves publically go in and handle in the open

i really started staying away from the news as best i could after 9/11 because i was sick of hearing, let's bomb the bombers because bombing is wrong and they bombed us

Some would argue that an interventionist foreign policy is never acceptable.

If you're talking about the cartoon, that's from the Clone Wars series of shorts that ran on Cartoon Network. I've only seen the first season, but it involves the fight in that animation, General Grievous being a billion times cooler than he was in the movie, and Mace Windu destroying droids with his bare hands.

I was wondering how long it would be before that story made it to these boards. My only concern is why is it not treason?
