Do you even understand that? How much more beneficial and safe overall it is to not have an extra person that you have to Cure? How awesome it is to have this constant source of damage that now can get its hate dropped by another job with a one minute timer on the JA (-25% hate every minute is crazy for a Ranger or Black Mage)?
FFXI is not about having your job deal the most damage possible in all situations! jesus
In a linkshell of mostly noobs, but ~8-9 solid players, we managed to kill Cerberus a ridiculous number of times without any risk of wipes, or anything going wrong at ALL!
Nothing. No 'clutch' cures, no 2hrs, zero risk. Flawless kills, every single one, I forgot what our best time was but that didn't matter to us, and we never really went over an hour.
Rangers. Stand at 20.1, Fire constantly, run in to do WS based on hate management (the Rangers in the LS were all some of the better players we had anyway). Note that we did this even before they added Velocity Shot.
So why did we stand at 20.1 instead of go in range? Well, Ranged Attacks work up to 25 units away, so you have a decent amount of distance that you can back up before you get owned. At 20.1 units, you can't get hit anymore by Gates of Hades and by the stupid Paralyga move, as well as any random screwups from Lava Spit going in a haywire direction. Complete safety, only tanks taking damage, easy flawless kill. And if something went wrong--Shadowbind.
Dude, Ranger sucks so much. I'm sorry. I was mistaken. </sarcasm>
And an ability to get ammo back from the mob that you used on it wouldn't be too terrible either, put it on a one minute timer or something and have it give you back 50% of the ammo used, unless the mob is an NM. Add something to a piece of AF or a new piece of gear to increase the effectiveness of the JA too. Ranger's gotta use that INT for something, maybe factor that in. It's on the hat, after all. (but I don't think I used the hat ever after I got my Maat's cap anyway)
and BRP, that was a damn good idea and I'm sorry for expanding on it before giving you the chance.
That's great, THF makes RNG good. Too bad they are two separate jobs.
I think you should review what people mean when they talk about "damage over time" because while shooting from a distance is technically damage over time, so is spells like dia and bio. RNG doesn't have great damage over time. Safe, maybe, but not great.
Shadowbind is awesome when you don't have other melees hitting it and breaking the bind.
And being able to beat Cerb easily is surely due to a RNG's awesome, hateless DoT, and not b/c of a certain other job being on the ball with a certain spell that interrupt moves for a short amount of time.
You, sir, broke my sarcasm meter. :nikkei:Originally Posted by Sanjiyan

As for Shadowbind, I'm struggling to think of two mobs in the game for which Shadowbind is useful enough to be desired, yet required sparingly enough not to be handicapped by it's 5min recast. If the solution is "bring an army of RNGs" (so that you actually have SBs to use) or "bring none" (since SB recast is too long to be relied upon), which choice do you think people will go with?
So remind me, where does the hemorrhaging of gil fit in again?Being able to stand out of range and deal constant damage over time without taking any damage from AoE is something that should come with minor consequences, and those are accounted for in the length of time it takes to shoot arrows/bolts/bullets.
Like I already said, I have no freaking qualm with RNG being relegated to the role of niche DD. But I do have a problem with paying out the ass to do it. If RNG is going to be just another DD, why shouldn't it get a truckload of recycle traits to go with it?
Or have scavenge find real arrows/bolts/bullets instead of the crap that you find now... seriously how game breaking would it be to find something slightly useful with scavenge for once.
The only reason Sidewinder/Slugshot have that accuracy penalty is because the ws is pretty low level for a 5.00x modifier. If SE simply swapped Blast Shot/Arrow's skill level with Slugwinder level they could remove the accuracy penalty from it. While they're at it make it also RNG/COR only. I'm sure we all hate those jerks in ballista playing SAM/RNG with Soboro and owning everybody. They could make it do something else like "Weighs the target down. Chance of weight varies with TP." Otherwise make it an average accuracy weapon skill and keep the "Accuracy varies with TP" like Swift Blade,True Strike,Penta Thrust etc...
Removing the accuracy penalty on those two WS I think is all what RNG needs. It made sense that slugwinder should be so innaccurate like 4 years ago when it used to do like 1.5-2k on Kirin and 3k+ on most other things, but since they added the level adjustment, shit needs to change. Then RNG could take some of that r.acc off and add more str/r.att.
Wait.
Are you actually whining about slugwinder's power level?
Let's take these one by one from the top, I guess.
Then let me rephrase it for you, since you're obviously not caring or open enough to listening to an opinion to hear the point. That's great, THF makes RNG good. Too bad they are two separate jobs.
THF doesn't make RNG good. An ability that Thief has increases the usefulness and damage that a BLM or RNG is able to safely do from a ranged distance! THF enhances both the jobs immensely! Jesus, I didn't say it was like, necessary to have a fucking THF for your RNG. It's a side benefit, and it was enough of one to make it worth mentioning.
RNG is a solidly founded job, with the ability to safely do damage over time, and provide burst damage if necessary, repositioning of a mob due to said burst damage, momentary backup tanking in an emergency due to said burst damage, and also in an emergency prevent movement of the mob (which ends up preventing action too, unless you're in range like an idiot). What part of this does not sound good? I'm failing to see your point.
And maybe you're failing, as I said before, to think outside the box, and stop thinking 'omg more dmgs'. FFXI is a community centered game, and requires multiple people to do almost everything worthwhile. As I sent to Maxx in an IM when we were talking about this topic (like second day in a row), the less people that mages have to deal with = the more concentration and time they have to spend on tanks = the faster they can react to changing conditions on tanks = less risk of death = safer fights = less wipes = team wins = THE END GOAL OF FFXI.
Maybe they need another disclaimer when you log into the game:
Seriously, do you not see it? Why the hell do they (basically) force us based on the system to have parties to XP at halfway decent rates? Think about it... maybe they're trying to tell you something!Code:The goal of Final Fantasy XI is not to deal the most damage or be the best player in the game. The game promotes and rewards players working together to achieve a common goal.
And so the safest form of non-spell effect damage over time should be rewarded with comparable numbers to DoT that you take risks for? .... Why?I think you should review what people mean when they talk about "damage over time" because while shooting from a distance is technically damage over time, so is spells like dia and bio. RNG doesn't have great damage over time. Safe, maybe, but not great.
No shit, get some melee that actually pay attention to what's going on. Force them to play more jobs of different types until they figure crap out and actually learn how to react. Shadowbind being broken isn't your Ranger's fault (most of the time) as long as he's announcing he's doing it or it's an order from whoever's in charge, it's the goddamn melee/mages acting on the mob breaking the bind for him.Shadowbind is awesome when you don't have other melees hitting it and breaking the bind.
Seriously, get some people that fucking pay attention. This isn't a legitamite argument against the greatness and saving grace known at Shadowbind.
Man, I actually typed out a whole post just in reply to yours, but I completely missed this sentence. I'm so glad the authentaction system logged me out and I ended up hitting back wrong and losing my post, because if I missed this, and saw it later, I would have cried. And being able to beat Cerb easily is surely due to a RNG's awesome, hateless DoT, and not b/c of a certain other job being on the ball with a certain spell that interrupt moves for a short amount of time.
Dude, we let Gates of Hades go off as long as our tank PT bard wasn't in range. After we started our Ranger/SMN kill method, we figured out that having that go off was less of a pain in the ass than dealing with fucking Magma Hoplon. Only people that ever got hit by it were the tanks. And they never got killed by it, in all the times we let it go off once we got complete control of the mob. Everyone at 20.1, Cerb in the corner, facing the ... east wall? Tanks on the right foot of Cerb, mages < 20unit from tanks and > 20.1 from Cerb, and you've got a win. Keep the tanks at high HP, quick Cure Vs from the WHMs that see Gates going off, fix the status, and carry on.
continuing with the next one,
ur doin it rongSorry, RNG's WS damage is no longer "high" (on anything that matters). 2h/THF (particularly: SAM) can regularly throw out WSes that eclipse slug easily. Screenshots taken with SV minuets and Flashy Shot (right before the mob died, or you did) do not count.
First and foremost, anything /THF isn't getting the best damage over time possible anyway, but if you're not letting it hit the mob except for when it goes to WS (which would then really only allow SAM here), it really doesn't matter in the end, I guess. Still, common concensus now a days is that /THF is crap. You hit your little SA/TA WS on the mobs that allow you to SA without consequences and then you're hitting for crap damage unless you've got a Bard, and not only that, but you're in AoE range. So now your Ranger damage which is the same as your melee damage because you're /THF, is safer and from a range.
Plus, you're probably not eating the correct food for the mob you're fighting. Ya, rly. This begs the question, how often do you actually use your ranger anyway?
NEXT
It's not, 'useful enough to be desired' that you need to think about, it's about the value overall of a Ranger being more useful in terms of safe DoT. Not only does Ranger have safe DoT, but they can take a situation that has turned sour and in most cases save things from continuing to go worse (always, always carry around your stupid gloves, please. -.-). You may not see that the mob by design needs to be Shadowbound, but Ranger gives you someone else that's not going to break the bind anyway, someone who takes minimal damage from the mob anyway (because they really only get damaged if the AoE is 30'+ like wings, or they pull hate), and someone that can give you an extra (at minimum, mind you) 30 seconds to pull things together and get reorganized. Plus the burst damage, and other stuff, blah blah, do I really need to keep shoving it down your throat? As for Shadowbind, I'm struggling to think of two mobs in the game for which Shadowbind is useful enough to be desired, yet required sparingly enough not to be handicapped by it's 5min recast. If the solution is "bring an army of RNGs" (so that you actually have SBs to use) or "bring none" (since SB recast is too long to be relied upon), which choice do you think people will go with?
Hemorrhaging? It's that bad? Sure, in XP it's pretty bad if you're firing the whole time like an idiot. Some melee, some ranged after you get Slug/Side, even still it's a lot of money to toss out for ammo, and like BRP suggested and I agreed with, some kind of ability on a decently low timer to give you ammo back that you fired at the mob would be a great addition as a job ability. So remind me, where does the hemorrhaging of gil fit in again?
Like I already said, I have no freaking qualm with RNG being relegated to the role of niche DD. But I do have a problem with paying out the ass to do it. If RNG is going to be just another DD, why shouldn't it get a truckload of recycle traits to go with it?
Ranger also requires a lot less money put into the gear than other jobs. A lot less. Get yourself your E-bow (or that new campaign one that looks pretty good), your Culverin, your O-bow, and your STR and RACC rings, and you're ... well, completely set and ready to go. Compared to other melee jobs that cost a lot more to gear to an acceptable point (haub, other main body, weapon, high priced pieces of gear in other slots, ACC rings, JSE, etc), the cost of support a Ranger to 75 and for a long period of time after is right about the same as it costs for some of the melee jobs.
Not only that, but you can go out and farm the freaking materials yourself, whereas some of that other gear isn't things that people can get on their own, most of the time.
Keep in mind that even with this, I still support that JA to get ammo back from mobs.
And even more additionally, Ranger is not just another DD. You are expending items to deal safe damage from a distance with an instantly renewable resource, which BLMs cannot.
Just like every other job in the game, it's in its own.
PLD-only line of divine magic similiar to ethereal earring

it would probably need to cap at some point and degrade over time if idle. dispel should remove it from mobs and in ballista... and if mob casts it on you.

I find it rather absurd that you're sitting here lauding the benefits of fighting at 20.x distance while simultaneously praising the power of slug. Guess what... at 20.x distance, you will not have a powerful, accurate slug without a hell of a lot of support. Any job can be dope with BRD+COR support.
...or you can use one of the multiple already-existing ways to recover from a stumble; ways that don't immediately go to sh*t because someone was already in the process of pressing a WS macro when you fired off your instant JA.It's not, 'useful enough to be desired' that you need to think about, it's about the value overall of a Ranger being more useful in terms of safe DoT. Unless you specifically outline beforehand "we will be shadowbinding when $EVENT occurs" (e.g. suzy), shadowbind as an emergency tool is underwhelming, to say the least.
...are you joking?Hemorrhaging? It's that bad? Sure, in XP it's pretty bad if you're firing the whole time like an idiot.
Unless you own a KC, every exp RNG should be spamming /ra at every available opportunity (hate issues aside). There is no mathematical reason to do otherwise, EVER. RNG's DPS is low-enough as is; standing around waiting to spam dagger or axe hits worsens the problem.
The only conclusion I can draw is that you believe that self-gimping is what a RNG should practice in general?
So you're sitting here telling me that RNG has it cheap at the same time you're saying to buy an e-bow? Right.Ranger also requires a lot less money put into the gear than other jobs. A lot less. Get yourself your E-bow (or that new campaign one that looks pretty good), your Culverin, your O-bow, and your STR and RACC rings, and you're ... well, completely set and ready to go. Every job can operate on the cheap; every job can spend mad lewt on whiteboxes. RNG's gear is no more or less expensive than anyone else.
Umm, sorry, economics don't work like that. Whether you farm the materials, play the market, or have the Arrow Fairy magically deliver your weekly wares every week, the unavoidable truth is: every stack of ammo you shoot is one you could have sold. To argue otherwise is to display a fundamental lack of understanding of basic economics (specifically: opportunity cost). Not only that, but you can go out and farm the freaking materials yourself, whereas some of that other gear isn't things that people can get on their own, most of the time.
And RNG can't use a pet to cheaply/efficiently heal, nor can they distribute enmity to/from other players, nor can they convert HP into massive zerging power. What is your point? And even more additionally, Ranger is not just another DD. You are expending items to deal safe damage from a distance with an instantly renewable resource, which BLMs cannot.
All the DDs have a specialty. Ranged damage is not somehow That Much More Special than the rest.
Prob last post on the topic. But here we go (more walloftext!)
Well comparing the useful aegis to another relic is kinda skewed because of LS dependency differences. But i agree relics as a whole need a buff. I don't own any others and therefore couldn't give an accurate input on a balanced buff. And Aegis only recently needs a buff now because of new gear options, it use to be fine.Originally Posted by Oulanbator

Suddenly we've gone from discussing "fixing what's broken" to "FFXI's a team game, it's not broken it's an asset".
I suppose BLMs sucking in merit and having to solo for half of the exp of what most other job is able to obtain is considered an asset. I suppose BST hovering between solo and party play all because SE's retarded is an asset. I suppose lolPUP before this update which removed the lol from it was an asset somehow too. In fact, any DD that does "safe" damage (read: shitty damage, and not by choice, so the mob stays on the tank) is great because it removed the strain on the mage's MP.
But you know what? I'm not being fair to BLMs. They have wonderful uses outside of merit. BST is still one of the best job at soloing (and they can earn tons of gil from seals, m i rite?), and well... PUP finally got something, right?
Let's see what RNGs can offer in any situation?
Merits: Horrible DoT when killing fast is the goal.
HNMs: Horrible DoT made worse by standing further away, but safe from AoE!
Solo: Wut?
RNG: Glass cannon, can't solo worth shit, hemorrhages gil every time it attacks, damage getting cut if standing outside the sweet spot (and annoying +1 when mobs run after him), life saving 2h (yeah right). All RNG IS, is a DD that can shoot from a distance with severe limitations (whether it be gil, distance, whatever). And they're not even a good DD by today's terms. Glass cannon? More like glass musket. Can't shoot far, can't shoot accurate, takes forever to get a shot off, and expensive.
One JA, shadowbind, does not suddenly turn a broken job into a functional one. RNG is JUST ANOTHER DD, with restrictions.
It is really frustrating when people counter the idea that rng is an expensive job with "you should feel lucky the gear is cheaper than most other melee" this is a poor analogy and does not work. There is a huge difference between buying gear that you wear, does not break or go away that you can resell later (not always at a profit maybe a small loss) and a ranger that spends large amounts of gil on expensive ammo that just straight up disappears.
Think how expensive it would get for normal melee if they ate twice as much food or food only lasted 5 minutes. Arrows are a consumable item, armor and gear is not, (unless it is an item with charges).
...especially since RNG items like E-bow, Kriegsbeil, dusk trousers, osode aren't exactly cheap anyway.Originally Posted by zoobernut

And what exactly are you basing this off of? Have you seen multiple people that actually care about Ranger play the job...?
Ok, Ranger got nerfed back in 2005... sure, it hit pretty hard, it made it so in XP PTs we couldn't stand right next to the mob and just fire and melee away and do lots of damage and TP very fast, it changed the damage calculations for ranged attacks and kinda put most RNGs away because they didn't know how to deal with it for things like Kirin to still make themselves seem useful (because all everyone cared about back then was still stupid Kirin, and starting out with Sea nonsense).
Then I think sometime in 2006? They changed the RAtk calculations again, giving Ranger a slight bit better of an outlook... and no one really still picked it back up. Of course, you had the life long Rangers (such as myself, and a few others that haunt BG from time to time, I'm sure Beckwin will end up ringing in on this thread soon) who wanted to go and take it for a spin for a little, and they saw some benefits from it but not a lot, and most linkshells, forums, and people in general were still stuck in the 'omg RNG sucks' mindset and wouldn't have anything to do with it. Just like the DRG bullshit (and people still don't fucking understand DRG, whatever), and the DRK melee stuff (which at least most of the people here understand, but the majority of people who end up picking up DRK still pull out their stupid GSD and /THF. /THF sucks, mmkay? k).
Then we got the epic Velocity Shot, making Ranged Attacking even better, at the cost of nerfing melee damage and speed.
They've already buffed it back up twice. It's at a really good level right now and it's really, really balanced. I didn't mind spending money on ammo in the end, once I noticed that what I was able to do on Ranger was a big contribution overall due to the safety of the damage and also the ability to fix things in a clutch.
Take the preconceived notions out of your heads that Ranger sucks, even if you have the job at 75. Especially if you have the job at 75. You owe it to yourself to gear it properly, learn to play it properly, force your linkshell to let you use it at events, and learn from the people who actually understand what the job is capable of doing and maybe testing it out for yourself before just saying 'no it doesn't work'.
You know what I do at my job if someone says they already tried doing something to fix a problem on their computer, and won't walk through it with me step by step to make sure they do it right? I tell them that I can't help them and that I would have to end the call because they wouldn't troubleshoot the issue anymore.
