He's extremely charismatic, he has "street cred" (which doesn't mean much in the octagon but is good for being a fan favorite in any discipline), and his fighting "makes sense" - he punches people and they fall down. Half the time I see a submission in MMA the guy getting submitted taps out once he realizes he's fucked - as an audience member it's sometimes hard to tell exactly why he tapped, which isn't exciting.

Kimbo is fun to watch, which is why many people hope he succeeds.
cavemen clubbing each other is fun to watch? ok...

here's an analogy for you. my roommate is huge into hockey. plays for the local minor league hockey team in town. i hated hockey...didn't know any of the rules or understand anything...'cept the fights. now i actually like hockey. i've learned the rules, why people do things, what's going on. fighting is just like that. your dumb fans will always just wanna see people slug it out. that does have its place, but once you learn what's going on in all positions, you'll appreciate it much more.

yup, I started watching the fights and was really interested in the bloodiest drag out fights they would show and would be bored with the other fights. Now I'm at a point where I don't really care who fights or who wins(somewhat) as long as I can learn something from the fight. Sometimes I even slow-mo some fights to watch the moves and the escapes and all that. Thanks guys now I want this semester to be over even sooner so I can sign up at my local gym, I thought it couldn't get worse.

Does your gym have a mma program or just individual fighting style trainers?

mma with focuses on BJJ, wrestling, muay thai and boxing. this is all tentative plans atm though, usually I tend to go through with things but shit happens sometimes.

OK, I will concede I know next to nothing about this stuff, but I have a question nonetheless that might be pretty dumb. Bruce Lee is often regarded as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, of all time (correct/incorrect?). How would he fair today against the best the MMA has to offer? Was he a one trick pony? The same type that would be dominated in MMA?

just because he doesn't submit people doesn't mean he doesn't have a ground game. hi2u 10 years in jiu jitsu and a purple belt.
hi2u blue belt, not purple. Unless he was recently awarded a purple within the last few months.

Holy fuck don't bring that Sherdog shit here. Seriously, that's why I don't read those boards very often. Those people are fucking retarded. Just because I'm not bashing anyone doesn't mean I'm nuthugging. GTFO with that bullshit.

bruce lee started jeet kun do...which is the first style that was "formless". he incorporated things from all styles to create one "mixed martial art". he was one of the first people in the world to actually see the benefit from incorporating multiple styles into one. besides being really old now he'd have adapted really well.

Like I stated earlier, (regarding martial art vs. martial art) he would get destroyed by anyone with a ground game. All they would have to do is take him down to the ground, and it's over.
However, if he trained ground too, I'm sure he'd do fine.

He was awarded his purple a few months ago. I don't read sherdog forums much either, however, you weren't the OP were you?

Re: Kimbo Slice: Mr. T IRL

As long as we're on the subject of MMA and EliteXC, just came back from one of our gym's fighter's fights in Atlantic City this past Friday. Eddie Alvarez just signed with Showtime for their ShoXC (the less expensive/popular) series of fights they have. He was up against Ross "The Boss" Ebanez, and it was finished in typical Eddie style.

Not sure if any of you are familiar with Eddie, but he's pretty huge on the East Coast. He started MMA when he was 18, and despite having a deep foundation in wrestling, he only trained months in MMA/striking before his first MMA fight. (ala Frank Shamrock). I remember training with him back in the day when he had just started...and to see where he's gone (and will eventually go) is pretty amazing. Probably one of the most exciting fighters in the world out now, definitely check his fights out. He's 12-1 (his only loss was to someone who severely outsized him)

Thats a video of his latest fight in AC, enjoy. Its ashame they cut it off at the end. He's infamous for doing backflips after his fight...only this time he did it off the top of the octagon, was pretty badass (even if dangerous) to see live.
