It is interesting to note the difference between the second and fifth lines of his pronouncement. Though the two lines both bear the same connotative meaning, that Achilles shall speak in accordance with what he intends to do, their respective phraseologies are disparate. Line two claims that “[I must speak]…how I think it shall be accomplished”2 while line five states that “I will speak as it shall be accomplished”3. Though nothing occurs literarily, grammatically, or syntactically which would mandate the semantic transmutation, Achilles nonetheless revises his linguistic method. As it is presented, the substitution appears to not be a result of any connotative or denotative exigency or even serve any sort of meaningful poetic purpose. It seems, rather, to be merely a product of cognitive incongruence. His diction is inadvertently inconstant and his words themselves therefore belie any Socratic virtue he might have possessed; even his diction is unreliable.
The fundamental malady of inconsistency and contradiction is their blighting effect on one’s intellectual and, consequentially, moral purity. Much like “the good and wise geometer, then, is the most powerful in both respects…he has the power to lie, but the bad one is powerless,”4 those who are not well versed in knowledge of themselves are powerless to combat the erratic nature of desire. Knowledge imbues an individual with the ability to marshal their own will and to be consistent in the mediation of words and actions. This isn’t to say, however, that knowledge is in and of itself an ontological triviality, appreciated for its novelty alone. Without the enabling faculty of self reflective truth, man is forced to err and to lie inadvertently. As Socrates teaches, this truth and knowledge presents the opportunity for man to serve as his own adjudicator—to exploit the depth of his knowing and preside over his own moral and cognitive affairs.
In addition to making tacit commentary on the iniquitous nature of consistency and contradiction, Achilles’ utilization of the verb “hides” (924) acts to further reinforce the individual ethical arguments of both Socrates and Hippias. This duplicity, however, does not serve Hippias, as his argument is protected by the unsound bastion of an ambiguous moral imperative (lying on purpose is bad) while Socrates’ point does not require ethical validation. Though the ultimate utility of “hides” is different in each case, it nonetheless lends itself to being the pivotal axis around which both arguments construct themselves. For Hippias, “hides” is significant because of its specificity and because of what it, as a precise and pointed word, implies to Achilles’ audience. Indeed, “hides” almost derives its significance not from what it is, but what it is not. It is not “contains,” though this stand in would provide the requisite conn
