The real reason Vista sucks? (Windows 7)

So if you havent heard (or just dont care), there has been an influx lately about Windows 7, the succesor to Vista, corresponding with an 'alpha' release of it. Basiclly MS has come out and sort of admitted that Vista was nothing more than a test for there OS that will be released in 2009 (yeah right). Not only do they admit that they took out serveral things in Vista to hold off for 7, but people have been accusing MS of using Vista as a trial for their new 'kernel'. So it's thought that Vista sucks so much is just because it was meant as a testing platform and nothing else, to get people used to their new revolutionary OS, so to say.

I have to admit, the way 7 is being hyped right now, it looks really good. Boosting features in virtualization, and a whole hybrid kernel known as MinWin, that takes up a very small space and just manages everything almost flawlessly.

Theres not too much out on 7 atm, but what there is makes it quite attractive. I hope MS doesnt fuck this one up. It's also nice to know alot of Server 2008 stuff will be included in 7, and vise versa.

If you wanna kill some time, heres a presentation of MinWin and how badass it will be http://www.acm.uiuc.edu/conference/2007 ... -Traut.wmv

I just wish Bill would spend a few of his Billions on getting the USA up to fucking speed (literally) with optic networking. If Japan can do it, why not us? Im sick of these slow ass speeds.

I vote for changing the Technical Support Questions to -> Technical Discussion and Support. I like reading these things but not through the general discussion, so A+ for posting it here.

Because their entire country is smaller than the state of California.

    Wait...
MinWin takes up about 25 MB on disk and has a working set (memory usage) of 40 MB.[14] It lacks a graphical user interface and is interfaced using a full-screen command line interface.[15][14]
    ???

I think there's a family of OS's that already take this approach and have several free options. :bagel:

    Windows millenium all over again?

Yeah well we will see when it comes out. I dont think this new OS wil replace Vista, more like this is the equivalent to windows 2k which was good.

The blurb at the bottom of the wiki article that mentions touch features is making me hopeful that 7 will feature this. I'm hoping over the next decade we'll see a phasing out of mice and keyboards in favor of multi-touch interfaces.

Doubtful, I've seen a surface demo and a friend of a friend is supposedly on the developement team, though he can't really talk about it. Surface seems slated, at least now anyway, to be implemented at high end restaurants or luxury homes. It's still way early in the development phase as is apparent from the limited information posted on Wiki, and they predict that a coffee-table configuration for a home user could cost upwards of 5 grand when released. Just from how it's looked... I think it'll turn out to be like Sync that's used in a few cars today. Personally I don't want or need a touch interface for my PC, but something like this in restaurants (where it can itemize a bill, read credit cards just by placing it on the glass, recognize food dishes) would be pretty damn cool.

Yeah, but those are the 30-inch, big table units. What I'm talking about is a desktop with a traditional "tower" hooked up to just one device which serves as KB, mouse, and monitor, a la tablet PCs.
