Yes, and that's why I make the Camel reference, Mikael has even cited Camel as a big influence. Personally, I find "Orchid" and "Morningrise" to be two of the best metal works coming from Europe. They were ostracized for their style when those 2 albums came out, because no one else was really doing that. The difference between the first two albums, and "My Arms Your Hearse" onwards is very pronounced. The twin harmonizing guitars went to the background, and more chord based riffing came foreground. The solos on the first two albums were a bit more inspired, holding that raw emotion in them that takes off in the playing. Maybe it's a matter of wanting to become more technically proficient. Overall, music shouldn't be about worrying what time your music is in, etc... (Mikael gave an interview alluding worrying about times, technicality, etc...).

"Damnation" was excellent, I will say, and "Ghost Reveries" had promise, but ultimately left a lot to be desired for me (granted I loved the bass lines). "Still Life" and "Blackwater Park" were very "blah" (save "Face of Melinda"). "Deliverance" was a bit too much like Porcupine Tree, but then again they both influenced each other heavily on their releases at that time.

For me, if you took "Orchid" and "Morningrise" out of their catalog, their releases would be great. Perhaps fodder was the wrong word, rephrasing would have me saying "mediocre" instead. Personally, I wish Dan Swanö would reopen Unisound Studios and produce another Opeth album. :D

Circle of the Tyrants is fucking trash, it is actually a cover of another band, Celtic Frost, so you can't totally blame Opeth. As for what Album it was on, it's actually a bonus track on a version of My Arms, Your Hearse.

No, it really is a lot like Porcupine Tree, look beyond the distortion. Steve Wilson even played on "Deliverance"...

Johan DeFarfalla and Anders Nordin are sorely missed, and it's sad to see Peter go (granted if I had a degree in physics I'd leave too). The "Circle of the Tyrants" cover was for a Celtic Frost tribute album, and Opeth did a crappy job on the cover. That song is from the early 80s, so certain aspects of it probably come off as silly today.

No, still not hearing Porcupine Tree on Deliverance really at all except for maybe the song "By the Pain I See in Others" all I'm hearing is Opeth. Akerfeldt wrote all the songs, so even though Wilson played on it doesn't mean it sounds like Porcupine Tree.

I agree with Seditedi, I'm totally failing to see how "Deliverance" was too much like Porcupine Tree because when the album was released, the two latest albums from Porcupine Tree were "Stupid Dream" and "Lightbulb Sun" which are more or less the pop rock albums by PT.

In my opinion, PT became more heavy because of Opeth (see In Absentia, Deadwing, FOABP) and not the other way around.

I liked the Orchid album actually. But Lamentations will always be at the top of my list just because of how amazing they sound live. Blackwater Park though, mmmmmmm.~ The Funeral Portrait is DA BEST SONG EVARZ!

If you don't see the similarities to Porcupine Tree that I see, then you don't see it. It has nothing to do with the heaviness/tempo/whatever you want to call it, but structure. To me, Opeth took on a Porcupine Tree level of predictability. By this I mean that you'll have riff A and riff B, and obviously there will be a bridge from A to B. Every band initially comes up with their own method of going from A to B, and onwards. For some, this could be just letting a chord ring, a breakdown, sudden silence interrupted with the new riff, etc... I find the two bands to have that same predictability, and you know where the song is going the whole time.

Yes, it's over-analyzing to an extreme, and I probably come off quite off. Overall, music should be refreshing, not formulaic.

He never said he disliked Opeth, in fact he said that if you took Orchid and Morningrise out of Opeth's catalogue then he would consider all their other releases great for the band. It's when they're compared to the quality of Orchid and Morningrise that they are less impressive.
