    Blogging

I'm going to be starting a new job soon, and I'd like to keep a blog to detail the work I do, mainly for self-educational process. Basically, so I can look back and refer to my previous work, and lessons I may have learned along the way.

Blogspot is probably what I have in mind to use, but I don't like their posting methods. Does anyone have any other ideas for blog sites I could use? I'd prefer to not have any advertisements or anything. LiveJournal used to be pretty good, so I may use that. I just wonder what you think.

livejournal doesn't have any ads, if you pick the simple blogging option with limited/no perks.

And don't get fired like the nintendo girl: http://spong.com/article/13833?cb=321

Nintendo girl is pretty good looking, imo. What a dumb thing to get fired for, seems to me Nintendo overstepped their boundries. Blogging should be protected under free speech...

    Re: Blogging

Yeah, a lot of companies these days love to make sure no one is using blogs or journals to
    1) talk shit about the company or its workers (ie, dont say your boss is an assclown when he might be able to read it)
    2) post inappropriate pictures of themselves that can be linked to the company (ie pics and company name on same blog)
    3) divulging trade secrets
    4) talk about illegal activities

I would be especially wary of #3, as depending on where you work it may be easy to slip up and mention something that the company considers a trade secret. This can be something simple as mentioning the name of a beta product or even how something looks. I would either make your journal/blog private or friends only to prevent your company from listening in. Don't underestimate them either, I've heard of companies hiring people just to look out for employee blogs as they relate to the workplace. The Nintendo article linked above is a great example, and you can be sure Nintendo isn't the only company that works that way.

#2 happened to a girl where I work. She listed the company as her employment on myspace, and she had half-naked pictures of herself in her profile. Boss saw the myspace page, she got fired.

The question isn't about free speech really. Freedom of speech protects you from going to jail or suffering legal consequences for what you say - not from your company telling you to take your opinions and gtfo.

This is also a nice alternative to the standard blogger or livejournal.

I'm just a simple drafter learning about pipeline design. I don't think that anything I'll be posting will be trade secrets, but I definately will be sure to not mention my company's name, nor the name of any clients we do work for. Thanks guys!

This is one of my biggest pet peeves on the internet. FREE SPEECH APPLIES TO THE FUCKING GOVERNMENT, NOT TO PRIVATE ORGANIZATIONS. If I own a company, and you say I smell funny, I can fire your ass on the spot (as long as it is proven to not be related to race/gender/religion).

In many states, including the one I live in, you can be fired for ANY or NO reason as long as its not related to race, gender, or religion. If it is for one of those 3 reasons, they can just give "No Reason" as the reason to avoid lawsuits, lol.

I hear lots of people say, "They can't fire me" etc etc. I laugh everytime I hear it.

Just check to see if you are employed in an "at-will" state (or commonwealth). At-will is the aforementioned you can be fired at any time for any reason or no reason situation.

I like http://www.vox.com. And you can make your blog private so others cannot see it.
