    Austin, Texas

So, I, along with like 10 other people I know, are all slowly migrating toward Austin, Texas because apparently...it's one of the most badass cities in the states. I'll be going there for culinary school (yay).

My question is, what's the scene like and such? All I ever really hear is "awesome" with no real details. I'm especially interested in the restaurant scene.

Well. I live in dallas for the moment to go to The University of Texas at Dallas. However, UT Austin is another great school too. I can't argue with scholarship money from UTD though.

However, I've lived in the austin area for the past 19 years. There are plenty of fine restaurants downtown and in the general Austin area. You should check out the Roaring Fork and Eddy V's Freshwater Grill. As for music and clubs, well, we aren't called the music capital of the world for nothing. The place in general is nice, however, there are some bad spots around notorious for crime, that APD has been cracking down on for a while now. Send me a PM and I can link you to some of the places of interest, I have class in 15 min. :rocl:

Going to the Le Cordon Bleu TCA? Its a pretty sweet school. :3

Austin is a cool place to live. Lots of wierd people here. One of the first things I saw when I moved to Austin:

Theres a lot of interesting small business type restraunts around, especially downtown near UT campus. I don't know what you're looking for about the restraunt scene, but I could definetly recomend a few good ones.

Din Ho (best authentic chinese barbeque)
T&S (really good authentic chinese and seafood)
    Sunflower (excellent viatnamese)
Sun Hing (really good americanized chinese food)
    Pluckers (best bufallo wings)
Veggie heaven (best vegatarian food. mostly asian dishes)
Cocos (bubble tea and asian food)
Golden Wok (excellent dimsum and create-your-own stirfry)
Top Notch (great old fasioned burger drive-in)

Seeing as UT Austin is a MUCH larger school than yours..... hardly see it as fake

As for Austin, kick ass city, it's the oasis in the closed minded conservative Texas. I grew up there 18 years before movin down to SA in '01 to be with my partner. (Long distance relationships suck)

The restaurant scene is very rich and diverse, great place to find something to eat, from local favorites like Kirby lane and Chuy's, to the more conventional nationwide chains, Austin has it all.

Warning: Traffic sucks. Austin is a box, with 183 on the north, Mopac/360 on the west, 290/71 on the south, and I-35 on the east. I-35 downtown is still the deadliest stretch of highway in the state, if not the country. Learn your roads within the box that can get you to where you need to go, while avoiding the highways, which are parking lots during rush hour.

Expect to see weird shit, often. Leslie is on congress, guy who wears a tutu and almost got elected governor for instance. It's a very fun city, you'll enjoy it there.

Being from Madison, everyone always compares it to Austin, therefore Austin must also be great.

Don't know too much about the restaurant scene. Use to go there for the nightlife mostly. 6th Street is well known for the bars/clubs/entertainment. Awesome place to be on Halloween too.

Holy shit. That reminds me about Leslie. That bastard used to hang out near my grandparent's place. And if you think traffic in Austin is bad lol. Meet Dallas. The place is a parking lot 95% of the time and people drive worse than in Austin, and Austin traffic is avoidable for the most part if you know some of the back roads.

Once again, on music, great bands like Spoon and Fire Kills, along with Cake hang out and play there alot. 6th street is your bar/club area.

Although unlike most austinites, I never liked kirby lane.

    Re: Austin, Texas

Gah I'm gonna love this city. I can't wait to start at TCA and get my ass out there.

My and a friend that already lives near there are gonna save up like 200-300$ a piece and eat our way around the city. Probably go to every place mentioned so far and just get a light snack at all the places just to see what they are all about, and then someday go back to the ones we liked for the real deal.

I'm not usually that into music and such, but even that has seriously got me interested.

Hm, I'll be moving to Austin soon too actually, so one quick question, any suggestions for a good sushi restaurant? I don't think I could find a proper replacement for my current favorite (Samurai Sushi in Nashville, if you're ever in that area you must eat there), but hopefully there should be something in Austin worth mentioning.
