Hm, I'll be moving to Austin soon too actually, so one quick question, any suggestions for a good sushi restaurant? I don't think I could find a proper replacement for my current favorite (Samurai Sushi in Nashville, if you're ever in that area you must eat there), but hopefully there should be something in Austin worth mentioning.

Place called Maiko downtown...i want to say on 5th street. maybe 6th street

also a place called Uchi...incredibly good but incredibly expensive. (maiko is no chump-food either)

My friends and I only go during Happy Hour though (I think Monday 5PM) when the prices are pretty low for a Sushi bar. There's a special sushi they make called a "Longhorn" which is like normal Sushi then deep-fried (JP friend says its not 'real' sushi but whatever it tastes good). Line gets pretty big during this time so you'd have to start waiting a bit early.

If you're ever in SA area, you should try Sushi Zushi or Pappadeaux. Both yummy. :D
Pappadeaux is a cajun seafood restaurant (no sushi) but one of my favorite. I believe they have one in Austin as well.

That menu is certainly... interesting. I'm all for non-traditional sushi if it can be pulled off well, but beef and jalepenos seem like ingredients that shouldn't even be up for consideration. I'll probably give it a try once I'm down there anyway.

Guess I'll have to come to terms that I won't find a place like Samurai Sushi though. They also have a ton of unique specialty rolls, some of which have rather unorthodox ingredients, but they taste simply orgasmic. Their most popular is probably the Choo Choo roll, which has shrimp, salmon, I think another kind of fish which escapes me right now, asparagus, cream cheese, strawberries covering the top with sprinkled nuts and a special sauce (their Hawaiian roll is basically the same thing, except it has mango instead of strawberries). It is unbelievably fucking good. They constantly experiment with new rolls too, most of which they'll only make for a short time, but the really good ones get added to the menu permanently. The staff is incredibly awesome as well. I've been going there practically since they opened, and if the owner is out in the dining area and sees me he'll usually add some kind of super secret special roll that's never on the menu for free.

Anyway... I'm just making myself hungry and a bit sad that I'm moving writing about this. >.>;

As for a BG get-together, I've long left FFXI. I only visit the forums here for the Random Image thread to brighten my day, I'm hooked on wow now.

It's really pretty there but jesus the traffic sucks. Lots of good food/drugs/music stuff there. Also, if you're going to buy a house there, get ready to pay out the ass. Many many people from the rest of the state love to move there so prices on stuff are more expensive than Houston SA Dallas or the valley. For music, SXSW is sooooo much fun and any good music group that comes to Texas goes to there for sure.

Once again, the traffic is laughable in Austin. Really only two bad places on 35/183 if you pay attention to KLBJ 590AM for traffic reports because of poor highway design. Come live in Richardson/Dallas, took me four hours to go 15 miles up 75Central to Campbell. Also, buy SXSW wristbands opening day, otherwise you're never ever getting one.

Depends where in austin you get a house/apartment. Closer to downtown / south Austin you get, the more expensive it becomes.

My wife seems to like Ichiban, Mikado, and Banzai for sushi. Don't eat it myself, so can't tell you from personal experience.

I lived in Texas and it sucked. The weather, the humidty, the smog, the people, etc. But I didn't live in Austin, I lived in Houston. I did make a day trip to Austin once but didn't stay long enough to see anything good.

Houston would be the problem. Place is packed, and its near the coastline. Farther in you get the nice clear sunny days along with none of the smog.

Austin is a beautiful and clean city that has a lot to offer. My fav thing to do in Austin is go to The Alamo Drafthouse which is by far best movie theater in the country. There is nothing like eating pizza and drinking beer while watching bad ass movie. I saw Quentin Tarantino present Kill Bill Uncut a few years back; also saw Robert Rodriguez previewing his movie Planet Terror. My favorite event The Drafthouse has put on was the all night George Romero movie-thon. They set up a movie screen on a farm house outside of Austin so you can bring lawn chairs or blankets to watch the movie. George signed autographs for 2 hours then had a Q&A session until it got dark then came the movies. First was Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and so on until 5am. Also, the Austin Air Guitar Championships are coming up soon and I have a feeling I will do well.

I saw RJD2 @ one of these Alamo Draft House shows, It was completely badass. Austin has one of the best music scenes for it's size hands down compared to any city.
