Try knocking your FFXI res to 800x600 and put all of your 3d graphic settings on their lowest settings.
if its just cooling issues make sure the wires in your case and anything else isn't all over the place, and make sure it has good ventilation(Dont stick it on a thick rug, in a hole in your desk etc), sounds dumb but make sure all the fans are actually running too
heatsink heatsink heatsink
ok so I can 2box at absolute minimum graphics (Pacman is better graphics then) but when I went up to medium settings it crashed again, dunno what that means but I am sad atm![]()

Im leaning towards B/C, more towards C. I think you got ripped off (the whole PC in general too), but that vid card looks like a pos. My $50 vid card can dual box fine, but I think you got taken on yours.
If you seriously bought that computer off that ebay page, I died a little inside.
edit* lmfao, they're getting the 8.8 by multiplying 2.2x4 because of the 4 cores......jesus christ.
Starr, it sounds like your problem is being caused by overheating or a bad graphics card (like many others have said). See what you can do about exchanging the graphics card first, as I imagine it will solve your problem. It's probably a loose heatsink on the GPU (or too much / little thermal compound, sticky silvery stuff).
I don't imagine it's your drivers or "Your video card sucks." It's probably a faulty unit / remanufactured. Does everything else run fine on your PC (music, anything else that may use the processor but not the GPU)? It seems like you have a nice little setup, don't get down yet! This happens pretty often when you build your own PC, something always happens when you're waiting to play. I also doubt it's just a ventilation or fan problem, your core temps don't raise that quick unless like... you filled your box with mud and literally no air is moving.
Ps. That seller is probably just a dick trying to decieve people with 8.8 Ghz... man wtf lol. That said, it's not Starr's fault, it's still a pretty nice system imo (once the graphics card is replaced most likely). 2.2 quad core still very nice, even if it isn't OMGWTFBBQ 8.8... since that doesnt exist. lol
Check and see if the heatsink is seated correctly, I've had mine bumped out of socket when moving more than once. Damn click-in pins...
Gotta love ebay sellers that do that shit (I'm looking at you Wii + 15 GAMES OMGWTFBBQYES)
Check your heatsinks / fans. Artifacting like that is usually your video card, but if your CPU is getting up to 84 celcius its defiantly more than just your video card.
Also, did you get your CPU in the box that was listed on that page? With heatsink+fan? Or did the seller rip you off and give you a cheap knock off fan? (Was the silver AMD logo tampered with on the outside of the box and does the fan say AMD on it?) Also the heatsink should have had thermal compound on the underside of it, you didn't wipe it off did you? (I've seen this happen before with terrible results...)
You have a Quad-core CPU, four cores running at 2.2GHz. Some less-than-honest companies multiply the cores together, therefore 8.8GHz. In the real world, you will not get 8.8GHz of performance from your PC, most programs aren't coded to run across multiple cores.
The PC runs FFXI at maximum settings fine and loads of other programs, I don't think there's anything wrong with it except the Graphics card, my friend tried it on his and it did the exact same thing though, similar but not the exact same card. There has to be more to it than heat or whatever, what card are you all using to 2 box?
How much better is 2.2 GHZ quad core than 3.2 GHZ normal PC btw? Did I buy it for nothing?
Right now I can dual-box with an AMD X2 6000+ 3.0 Dual Core + 2 gigs DDR2 PC6200 RAM + GeForce 8600GT.Originally Posted by Starr
Quad Core is basically 4 CPUs running together. Most programs won't use all 4 cores, but when your multi-tasking is when you'll see the results (Video/Music editing, etc). I don't think FFXI uses more than 1 core, but I could be wrong. You built yourself a beast of a machine, IMO you went overboard if all your using it for is FFXI. I'm sure you'll be able to run Crysis well though! :D
tbh I can dual box on lowish settings in low population areas on a 7300GS. Your system should do it fine on specs alone.
I need to fix it so I can 2box =( My friend says it could be windower but all the people I know 2box on 3.3 newest version. I'm considering E-baying the entire PC and trying again, being able to 2box is more important than playing FFXI at max graphics but I want it to be on good graphics with no lag for 2 box.
Is there any way to 2box with official windower? If you partition hard drive and install twice or somehting?
I should have said something in my post...Originally Posted by Starr
Your old Pentium 4 running at 3.2GHz is only about as fast as a Core 2 Duo running at 1.6GHz. Your Phenom, clock for clock is a bit slower than a Core 2 Duo, but not much. I would say it's like a 2.1GHz Intel quad core.
It's certainly better than what you had, a lot better. Whether or not you need it is a question that only you can answer.
Unless it was a Prescott, then it's a bit closer.Originally Posted by mootsfox

of a similar thing about a year ago and then last week ;;, get your card replaced! (i had 1 card from shop break in a week from purchase) again if ya want to be flash the asus en8800gt looks hawt if ya can find one in stock ;;
Also not that its important now but i dont see ffxi ever making the most of quad core, i would of gone for intel e6750 or if ya want to be flash the e6850, i think intel should be comming out with the 45nm Penryn soon
They're out, the E8400 and E8500. The 45nm quads were delayed, but the duos came out on the 20th Jan.Originally Posted by Izildur
